First I'm not sure how to define yuppie music except for Hewey Louis. DESTROOOOOOOOYYYYYYY!!!!! And maybe the Eagles, except are they too low-brow for yuppies? Anyways, DESTROOOOOYYYYYYYYYY! !!!Other than that, lets see- "American Psycho" had New Order in it but they're way too cool. Then, Steeley Dan- they do kind of satirize yuppies though don't they? I'm not sure what to think but a couple of their songs are cool like "Hey 19". And how about, ABC "Poison Arrow" and "When Smokey Sings." And more 80's crap like that Yeah so say more OK.

How are the Eagles low-brow?? Fuckin' Henley reads Thoreau for kicks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't get me wrong ---- I hate the fuckin' Eagles, but they're not low-brow.

haha that link is like an inescapable blackhole of earlier and earlier links

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 September 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

when I go to my dad's place I'll pull all his celtic cd's out and put in either his greg brown or spyro gyra. he's not young or urban either, but you get me.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Friday, 12 September 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a Young Urban Professional but my Mobility seems to have stalled a bit probably because I spend all day on here. My more go-getting colleague loves Radiohead and the Super Furry Animals, was very excited when he heard I had heard the new Basement Jaxx album, had a "Have YOU ever heard of him?" conversation with me about Dizzee Rascal but decided he respected what Dizzee did though he didn't think he'd enjoy it. His favourite to win the Mercury would have been The Thrills.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

My yuppie lawyer housemate listens to a lot of vaguely "latin" "electronica".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

you can't seriously hate huey lewis and the news can you? although i do think of american psycho every time i hear them now

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The only thing good about Huey Lewis & the News is that I think about 'American Psycho' every time I hear them now.

Moss Feaster (Moss Feaster), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I always feel kind of like a urban professional when I listen to Spacetime Continuum.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The only thing good about Huey Lewis & the News is that I think about 'Back to the Future' every time I hear them now.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

What the fuck is a "yuppie"?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 13 September 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone to thread!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 13 September 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracy Chapman. Bjork.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 13 September 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Sade, Tracy Chapman and Lauryn Hill (what I call Ikea Soul) as background music.

Pheromones, "Yuppie Drone"

Ikea Soul

Hahahahahahaha.

I was just thinking of those jazz/soul compilations you can buy at places like Banana Republic. They're packed to the rafters with predictable tracks by Marvin Gaye, Etta James, Miles Davis and Curtis Mayfield, yet the cover photographs always depict invarialby lillywhite yuppadroids frollicking funklessly in some beautific Hamptons shrangri-la.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 September 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

on the other thread I said sex pistols, the clash and the ramones and I'm absolutely correct abt that.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 13 September 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

how hilariously provocative

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 13 September 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

that's how i see it. but yeah, who would have thought it back then.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 13 September 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

search: Pet Shop Boys circa 'You Were Always On Mind'. heartbreak song of choice for the breezeblock-sized mobile phone-wielding denizens of lonely London wine bars.

Wyndham Earl, Saturday, 13 September 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

on the other thread I said sex pistols, the clash and the ramones and I'm absolutely correct abt that.

Weak attempt at desperate provocation.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 September 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Credibly "yuppie" music (is the term still a valid one? I mean, yes...there are still "young, urban professionals," but the term itself sounds so dated):

- Norah Jones
- Macy Gray (more so her first single)
- Dave Matthews Band
- John Mayer
- Moby (or, basically, Play)
- The Verve (well, Urban Hymns anyway)
- Counting Crows

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 September 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

smooth jazz

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 13 September 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Does "yuppie music" ever cross over into "secretary rock"? I'm thinking Coldplay here.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 13 September 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

YES! Coldplay (and, for that matter, Travis) are the perfect example.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 September 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

no its not provocation. yuppie kids (or 'real punks') listened to that rubbish alex.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 14 September 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

julio i think the letter "y" is the problem: the clash is music listened to be ppl who USED to be yuppies

ts: weak provocation vs weak smugness

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 14 September 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

who is being smug here?!

my ans is the appropriate one for this q.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 14 September 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't necessarily think ANYONE is being smug here (inc.some/all of the artists being attacked), i just wondered whether weak provocativeness is better or worse than weedy complacency
