The track "Bad Sex" by Amon Tobin feat. Chris Morris closes the Ninja Tune box "Xen Cuts". I thought that I read a while back that he (Morris) is some kinda comedian, and that he's worked with other musicians. Would like to more.
Please and thank you.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 September 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

its kind of like a satirical news show
morris has some incredibly funny one liners, and they also fool loads of famous people in revealing their ignorance
in one episode they invented this drug (or the concept of it,not an actual chemical)cake, and sent out loads of info on it to the press, who got on the backs of various politicians about how nothing was being done about britains fierce cake problem...this led to all the politicians talking about all the dreadful things cake had done in their constituency, etc, before the show revealed it was all a hoax

what makes this rise above the usual is a)how far the take the joke, and b)the rest of the show,a few week sketches, but relentlessly funny and some of the best use of the english language ever on television
in my opinion only twin peaks and the simpsons come close in terms of justifying the existance of television

robin (robin), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Brass Eye may be the best TV I've ever seen in my life. I can't watch documentaries anymore without hearing all the over the top lines as the clangers that they are. And that's a pretty fucking great achievement.

Have you seen Jam Robin? That's also out on DVD, it's a comedy sketch show. Pretty twisted and a bit hit and miss but still fucking hilarious in places.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

if youblike jam, somwthing that is worth checking out is Blue Jam, which was the original radio series on which it is based, There a CD best of comp available on Warp records.

see also The Day Today, which does for news programs what Brass does for documentries.

One of the best things about Chris Morris shows is the use of the graphics, which is spot on and adds to the realistic feel

Morris is most famous in the UK for a Brass Eye special that mockjed the then media obsession with peadophillia, causing outrage in the more knee jerk newspapers and politicians. search the bbc web site for more info

Robin Goad (rgoad), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a good thread on that Brass Eye special in the early days of ILE.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Morris is a genius but I'm worried that he's not funny anymore

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

you can download the origional blue jam radio shows here

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/faceless/com2/frame.html

the real player streaming doesn't seem to work at the moment but you can download the files - they are rather large but well worth it!

jed (jed_e_3), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That short film that won the Bafta definitely wasn't funny. Jam often wasn't very funny, although it was devastatingly effective. All the Brass Eyes and Day Todays are painfully funny and devastatingly effective. Search them. He also does (very well) sound manipulation, where he takes a Blair or Bush speach or someone and re-edits it so it sounds like Bush is saying that every child in American should own a nuclear warhead. There are MP3s available.

However, probably the single funniest thing I heard Morris-related is a thing from an old radio show where he sent his studio stooge to get a taxi playing a teenager being guided through his first taxi ride by his father (Morris) through an earpiece.

Nick H, Friday, 12 September 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

jed (jed_e_3), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It's very funny jed. The stooge is Paul Garner who I think did stuff on the 11 O'clock Show as well. Anyway, Morris feeds him lines to say to the taxi driver, adjusts the wing mirror to suit him, tells the driver he didn't like the way he came onto a roundabout so can he go round it again. Look for it on slsk. It really is very funny.

Nick H, Friday, 12 September 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

What is ILE?
Shit...I've got Windows '74. Can't even download a virus.
I still don't understand the music connection. Is the thing on Warp music, or skits? And if its music, is it any good?

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 September 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh...and does he say "Jah Wobble" on the "Bad Sex" track???

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 September 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I just figured out what ILE is, so nevermind on that one, k?

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 September 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

peepee - the warp cd is skits over ambient warp style electronica - though the word skits does it no justice - its not comic - its kinda dark and scary and twisted - its funny of course but the intention doesn't seem to be to make you laugh but rather to confuse or confound you. his use of language highlights the absurdity of the way people generally - or especially the media - use it.

jed (jed_e_3), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i went away for two weeks just after posting on this thread
i really liked jam, didn't think the blue jam cd was that good though, not the best sketches

anyway,i had (but lost)an mp3 file of a morris sketch about an agorophobic,it was done on the radio in the form of a mock letter from a listener,it didn't seem to be on any of the websites, does anyone here happen to have it?
it was really good

robin (robin), Friday, 26 September 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
On a barren stretch of road in northern Iraq, a dog rigged with explosives approaches a group of Iraqi police officers. Detonated by remote control, the bomb tears the dog apart but doesn't harm the cops.

In a war where the line between civilian and soldier is blurred, even man's best friend has been caught up in the combat. U.S. forces hail their trained dogs as heroes, but to insurgents, canines provide the means for a more sinister goal.

"How can they use these lovely pets for criminal and murderous acts?" asked Rasha Khairir, 25, an employee of a Baghdad stock brokerage. "A poor dog can't refuse what they are doing with him because he can't think and decide."

Pity about Nathan Barley, though.

But! WHALES!

http://s46.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3HDZ6J5T9HR0R1ZH1HKNHJPCVA

It's from his early radio days, and obscenely funny- a fake REM song about eating whales with horrified intro from Morris. There's also a fake Pixies track that's just as effective, but I don't have it lying around. Should be on Soulseek though.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

I've been told that Chris Morris had a very behind-the-scenes role with the single 'No Way No Way' by sub-Spice Girl late 90s girl group Vanilla. I don't believe it for a second. Anyone know anything about this?

Didn't he make an album of warp type electronic music and comedy sketches?

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Thursday, 11 August 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

the music was all by warp artists, it was selection from the radio show 'blue jam', which was extended, very strange 'sketches' (not even) over moody 'ambient' music.

found only lyrics to the song "Me Oh Myra" by Blouse... wish i could get audio...

When I saw your photo, in the press, I thought
Is she blonde?, under her dress, I thought
I hope they make her, take off her dress
For the next one, but they didn't even know it would be so much better if it had been alright sitting there having a fag

I used to have your picture, in the toilet
I wanted you to see my naked body and oil it
But my mother had to catch me and spoil it

And I don't think even you, could have given me more
Murder

Every time I see your picture, Myra
I have to phone my latest girlfriend and fire 'er
And find a prostitute that looks like you and hire 'er
Oh, me oh Myra

You better watch out Brady, I'm gonna 'ave ya lady
Just 'cause I wan-'er, just 'cause I can get her and you can't
So pogo on that you twat

I liked Nathan Barley a bunch.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Friday, 12 August 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

"Eat, eat whale meat - when you want a treat..." or such, c.f. the REM one. :)

He was really a consummate radio comedian/DJ - where you find him relatively solo, unlike say, The Day Today, Nathan Barley (which I liked in parts; particularly the "BAD, to have a BAD uncle..." episode, though that just failed to quite ignite into full brilliance) or the Brass Eye Special, which had sizeable contributions from others. "Blue Jam", particularly, was brilliant work, and it seems remarkable just 6-8 years on that it was broadcast on BBC Radio 1. A mix of ambient-pop (Moloko, Stereolab, Aphex Twin, Alessi Bros. is a fair sample) and toying with the mind. Clearly "Twin Peaks" (use of darkly atmospheric music) and Viv Stanshall (the loosely ongoing saga of the monologues) are heavily drawn upon. But Morris has a whole different dynamic with the intertextuality of Michael St. John Alexander's 'dance charts' and the like, and citing of various Radio 1 DJs. Most of all, I think that the hour of Blue Jam was an unpredictable, uncanny listening experience; you never quite knew what you would hear next, or quite believe you had heard it when it came. It really didn't work so well on TV, despite some fine performances from the ensemble, particularly David Cann.

"i'm the devil and you're a fool'

N_RQ, Friday, 12 August 2005 07:46 (twenty years ago)

Stumbling across Blue Jam in the middle of the night unannounced was one of the weirdest radio experiences of my life.

It was the sketch about the dog that got turned into the less successful short fiilm (My Wrongs...). Madness (literally, as distinct tones of schizophrenia in that one.)

His sound is amazing. He must record at high volume or something, 'cos you hear every lick of the lips, evry swallow, every sigh. All those creepy scenes with doctors in Blue Jam with the awkwardness literally amplified.

The use of language is great as well. 'There's a man over there smoking a crack' etc.

N_RQ, Friday, 12 August 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh man. Chris Morris is responsible for one of the most uncomfortable situations ever- I was making a flight from Chicago to Atlanta, coming home from college for Thanksgiving, and listening to my ipod on random play. The guy next to me is obviously bored and keeps glancing over at my screen- normally I hate over-the-shoulder readers, but this I don't mind as much, figuring I have pretty decent taste.

Then "Little Girl Balls" from the Blue Jam CD comes up.

He gives me a horrified look and buries himself in his in-flight magazine for the next three hours.

AWKWARD.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 12 August 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Yes, his linguistic inventions are up there with Stanshall, when at his best. A shame that "Nathan Barley" and other latter-day projects saw a tailing off; though, the "Brass Eye Special" was genuinely *needed* television and can be forgiven for being slightly weaker than the series.

Sadly, that site never seems to work for me; at least not for series 2 and 3. Must say I would buy a set of the lot if the BBC/Warp released them in full. Surely, the problem must be clearance for the music; apparently, they had considerable trouble with this even when compiling the compilation-CD, and that was just sketches/monologues etc., without full musical tracks, as on the show.

Tom May (Tom May), Saturday, 13 August 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)
