Apparently he's also passed away....in a Nashville hospital. [moderator removed a word from title, as asked and approved downthread.]

actionjackson, Friday, 12 September 2003 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

:( this is terrible news, my life has been very much enriched by his music. RIP Johnny

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I was blithely thinking this morning (after hearing an ad for The Australian Nirvana) that I hope I hear early enough on the day Johnny Cash dies to be wearing black. But I wasn't.

Justin Timberlake better actually give his estate that damn award now, or I'll find him and kick his ass.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

what a fucking year. RIP.

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

In a little cabaret in a South Texas border town,
Sat a boy and his guitar, and the people came from all around.
And all the girls from there to Austin,
Were slippin' away from home and puttin' jewelery in hock.
To take the trip, to go and listen,
To the little dark-haired boy who played the Tennessee flat top box.
And he would play...

Damn it. Damn it. Damn it.

maria b (maria b), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if it's something to get angry or incredibly upset about. He was 71 and had been really sick for a while; and I can't think of too many people who've lived fuller, cooler lives, you know? Just put on one of his records and be glad that it exists.

Charlie Rose (Moss Feaster), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

From I Walk The Line to Hurt, 1957 to 2002. He's had a very rich life and we've been priveleged.

mentalist (mentalist), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

He had so much buzz right in the months before he died. No one needed to reminded who he was. At 71, it feels like he died in the prime of his life.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 12 September 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Gone to join June.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone always say that rock'n'roll was stolen from the black man, but those early Sun records by Johnny and Carl Perkins et al show just how important country was to rock'n'roll. And anyone that thinks Jimmy Page or Keith Moon were the 'bad boys' of rock need only read any good Cash biography to see what partying was all about.

On a personal note, his records were the first records I ever played that didn't come with an accompanying story book, like 'Song of the South.' Four year olds to eighty-year olds like Johnny Cash, and not many musicians can claim such a wide age spread and politically diverse audience.

Andy, Friday, 12 September 2003 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

RIP Johnny.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I cried for the first time since my friend died of cancer last year, I'm crying while I type this. He was the absolute man....I don't really have words for this right now.

Brandon Welch (Brandon Welch), Friday, 12 September 2003 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Search: his version of "I'd Rather Die Young"

heartbreaking.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 12 September 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yo fuck johnny cash, rip john ritter... johnny cash was like two hundred years old and he had been lamely pimping his impending death for like ten years now, 'ooh heres a song abt me dying, will it be my last? will it?? huh?? no im gonna put out five more identical 'death' albums!!!'... john ritter was funny as fuck and still doing worthwhile stuff up to his death, r.i.p. dude : (

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 12 September 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry i really just dont give a shit abt cash one way or the other but i cant fucking believe this thread title

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

How about "fuck neither of them"? They both made a lot of people very happy, and people who were fans of both are especially sad.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and Ham -- I am not attacking you, since you called yourself on it right away. I'm just saying "damn. This is all very depresssing."

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. This would give me the blues, if Johnny hadn't shown me that I should get rhythm instead.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i think a moderator should take it out of the thread title

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i was about to suggest the same

charlie rose posts to ILX?

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 12 September 2003 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure take it out, I typed it up rather quickly, just my initial reaction, less about Ritter and more about being even more shocked about JC. =(

ham on rye (ham on rye), Friday, 12 September 2003 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Ritter's passing was probably more sad in some ways actually since I think it was figured he'd be around for another four decades cranking out sitcoms and appearing in random indie films.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Friday, 12 September 2003 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel like I'm going to throw up.

I haven't had anyone I'm so emotionally attached to pass in my entire life. During my long lonesly bus rides home I put on his music and felt better. ugh, what a bad day.

David Allen, Friday, 12 September 2003 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone fix 'fuck John Ritter' it's really getting to me?

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

come and knock on our door, we've been waiting for you.

reo fordecor, Friday, 12 September 2003 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks

ham on rye (ham on rye), Saturday, 13 September 2003 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ham on rye, yr a moron. I'm glad trife said pretty much what i was thinking. everyone with a clue was already saying in January, "This is Johnny's year," but no one could have foreseen the death of John Ritter (who, by the way, country music fans, was the son of Tex Ritter, in case you didn't know, idiot)

I mean, that "Hurt" video may as well have been a tribute to his life and times. He knew what was in store. I loved the Man in Black just as much as anyone, I've read every book on his life that exists, but is anyone else dreading the inevitable "Remembering Johnny Cash" articles and televison programs? Do we really need to hear how much Beck was "really, really influenced" by Johnny Cash? Fuck these imbeciles.

Here's to John Ritter, the only non-animated man on prime time that has ever made me laugh.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 13 September 2003 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I apologize if I unintentionally hurt your feelings, Rog. The current thread title expresses what I meant, essentially.

i.e. one death impacted me, then the second one hit and it was like "forget about that other one, this is the one that matters more to me". Which is why after I posted it I immediately apologized. Y'see, funny thing about ilxor.com - you can't go back and change something, you just have to kind of say "sorry" and then deal with those who can't accept it

ham on rye (ham on rye), Saturday, 13 September 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

johnny rules. I'm pretty bummed.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 13 September 2003 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never devoted much time to Cash's music. The songs he's well known for are great, but I've never heard much else.

John Ritter, on the other hand...damn. I've seen every episode of Three's Company at least 4 times, and several of his films, and even watched his new show on occasion. Nick at Nite shows two episodes of TC every night and when you spend an hour with a man every day, you start to feel like you know him. Next to Hanks, he was probably the most geniune and nice guy in Hollywood, as well as a master of the comedy/drama dichotomy.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 13 September 2003 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

In case it's not obvious to everyone, the thread title was changed, w/ "nevermind" in place of "fuck." (And for intelligibility sake, the moderator should have inserted a post to this effect when s/he made the change.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Saturday, 13 September 2003 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Is someone gonna delete the "yo fuck johnny cash" upthread, too?

That's pretty sickening whether you like Cash or not. Pimping his death? Please.

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 13 September 2003 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i was already wearing black

doorag, Get your University Diploma, Saturday, 13 September 2003 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

JOHN RITTER WAS TEX RITTER's SON!?

i didn't know that, thanks.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Saturday, 20 September 2003 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Good grief, Fritz, if ever there was a piece of commonly-known 'hey did you realize?' trivia about 70s/80s celebrities...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 September 2003 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

seven months pass...
All I can say is that anyone who doesn't have respect for John Ritter's death is an idiot. Try and come on my John Ritter group and say something like that. We will boil you in oil!!!!

Lori Henry, Saturday, 15 May 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

This just in: they're both dead!
