Debaser for me but there is so many.

While Tromp Le Monde is usually my favorite album, the song would have to be "The Happening" or "Velouria"
I love the shiny, metallic production and think it is so incredible that the Pixies were able to change so much while keeping their identity and, in my opinion, improving. This goes against the grain of most pixie admirerers, I know, so I won't even go into my other problems with pixies criticism.

Magic City (ano ano), Friday, 12 September 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I love "Dig for Fire." Right now, anyway... I love every one of their songs.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 12 September 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dig for Fire."

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 12 September 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Toughie, so I'm gonna cheat. "Debaser" for sheer, manic un-hingedness. "Alec Eiffel" for irresistable hookiness, "Velouria" for texture, "I've Been Tired" as a singalong, "Winterlong" is a classic, classy cover.

d.w., Friday, 12 September 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of the time I just want to hear the flirst flush of wigged out Spanish rifferama that is Come On Pilgrim. So, 'The Holiday Song'.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 12 September 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now, probably "Ed Is Dead".

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 September 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"here comes your man"

jel -- (jel), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't pick one. Toss up between Subbacultcha, No. 13 Baby, Levitate Me, Dig for Fire, Letter to Memphis, about a dozen others.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

U-Mass, Bone Machine, This Monkey's Gone To Heaven, Wave of Mutilation, Alec Eiffel, pretty much all of Doolittle come to thing, Dig For Fire, Planet of Sound

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

'into the white'

geeta (geeta), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"Chip Away Boy"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I still get bewildered by people liking 'Monkey Gone To Heaven' and 'Dig For Fire'. THEY ARE SO ANNOYING AND STUPID!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Tie: Bone Machine vs. Dead

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Friday, 12 September 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

River Euphrates

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Velouria

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Toughest question I can imagine, but I'll plump today for Gouge Away.

All that gorgeous guitar noise, the driving bass, the poisonous Christian guilt and Biblical allegory of the lyric, Charles' frantic vocal... gives me the chills every time. Catharsis-a-go-go.

... been rubbin' a bad charm with holy fingers...

Palomino (Palomino), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

today i will go for "Hang Wire" i just love that line "the day is like a warm night/ salt rusts the cold line" dont ask me why! i think bossanova is my favourite elpee of theirs too. Come on Pilgrim second best.

jed (jed_e_3), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i know we've done this subject before. too lazy to go find the thread tho.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

subbacultcha, for just the opening 2 lines if for nothing else.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 12 September 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

this is gonna be one of those "forgettable" songs that just hits me every time i hear it, delivered with an economy along the lines of VU/stooges, soaring motorik... i don't want to say too much:

D=RxT

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 12 September 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I love d=rxt too (ripped it off for a song in my old band), but all-time favorite has to be the ROARING 12" version of "River Euphrates." Not the album version, pls.

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 13 September 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Allison.

David Allen, Saturday, 13 September 2003 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

autovac (autovac), Saturday, 13 September 2003 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 13 September 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The one that goes ner ner ner ner, BAM BAM BAM (aaaaaaaarrrrrgggghhh) BAM, ner ner ner BAM BAM BAM skreeeeeeeeee.

Neil Willett (Neil Willett), Saturday, 13 September 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Bone Machine.

PS: Is it just me or does Doolittle sound better the tinnier the stereo you play it on?

Ben Dot, Saturday, 13 September 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
isla de incanta. it's the riff. and the speed. just the first 55 seconds. the other 44 are a waste.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

where is my mind

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"monkey gone to heaven"

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll take "Hey"--right now anyway

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

just like everyone i know that likes the pixies i go from one favorite song to another...im not in a ver pixies mood right now so i guess it is the perfect oportunity to choose ONE song
still im gonna pick a few in no particular order

Anna
levitate me
gouge away

strawberry alarm clock, Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Tough call, but I'm going with "Dig For Fire."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess "Gigantic" isn't many Pixies fans favourite. i'll go with "Gigantic" but it so could easily have picked "Bone Machine", "The Happening", "Debaser", "Something Against You". Picking a favourite ten is difficult, picking just one is almost impossible.

Neil FC (Neil FC), Sunday, 30 November 2003 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Debaser , dammit! Thats the kind of song I wake up to, and feel all happy inside.

Cacaman Flores, Monday, 1 December 2003 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

There needs to be more U-Mass love...

"OH KISS ME CUNT! OH KISS ME COCK!"

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 1 December 2003 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i think all pixies songs are just silly 19-year old frat-o-rama anthems for people into "alternative" music.
after the doors, they're the group you should first outgrow.

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 1 December 2003 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Out of curiosity, what groups that you liked at 19 do you still like?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 December 2003 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh not the "indie is for kids not adults" line again... blargh...

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 1 December 2003 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Well for myself there are too many favorites, but i'll try and list five, in no particular order:
1. Gigantic
2. Planet of Sound
3. Wave of Mutilation
4. Caribou
5. Debaser
That still doesn't feel adequate, I love the Pixies' music so much.
I hope I NEVER outgrow the Pixies.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 1 December 2003 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I also shoulda put "Broken Face".

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 1 December 2003 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Subbacultcha

luna (luna.c), Monday, 1 December 2003 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

well, "indie is for kids not adults" might be an ILM cliche, but isn't there anything about it that rings true? and i do still like some indie music that i loved at 19...such as

wedding present
stereolab
clash
boo radleys
fugazi

of course this comes down to personal preference, but aren't there *some* groups that grow old badly? such as...

pixies
sonic youth
dinosaur jr
suede

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

into the white.

(Jon L), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)
