2004 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominees Set

Former Beatle George Harrison, Prince, John Mellencamp and Jackson Browne are among the nominees on the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ballot.

Harrison, who died of cancer in November 2001, is already in the rock hall as a member of the Beatles. Former bandmates John Lennon and Paul McCartney preceded him for their solo work. Both Harrison and Mellencamp are former Billboard Century Award honorees.

Previous nominees back for another try include the Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gram Parsons and Patti Smith. Other nominees include the Dells, the "5" Royales, Bob Seger, the Stooges, Traffic and ZZ Top.

Ballots were mailed this week to voting members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.

Artists are eligible to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after at least 25 years have passed since their first record was released. The inductees likely will be announced in December.

Not that I thought much of it to begin with -- and it has Billy Joel in it for fuck's sake -- but I'm going to enjoy seeing more and more as time goes on if the voters contort themselves even more by ignoring Black Sabbath in particular in favor of the likes of Traffic.

I mean, Bob Seger?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

JUSTICE!

I think the increase of MTV-style artists like the Coog and Prince and those many-time-nominated punk and proto-punk icons will be great for the Hall Of Fame. More flash! More awkward moments! More tension!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

man, the Cars and Blondie are totally eligible now! VAN HALEN!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

this critical/commercial split is just gonna get worse and worse as time goes by. I love it!

Rawk n roll according to Rolling Stone. I'm guessing Britney will make it in rather easily around 2022.

Horace, you're wrong.

J (Jay), Sunday, 14 September 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Mellencamp should get in, just to emphasize the bitey-tude of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Nicolars (Nicole), Sunday, 14 September 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I happen to like Mellencamp and Seger, but if their inclusion makes people scratch their heads, wondering WHAT THE HELL IS THE HOF IS THINKING, so much the better.

Who votes for these things, anyway?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 14 September 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Go Jackson Browne!

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Sunday, 14 September 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 14 September 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

when I say commercial/critical I really mean overground/underground.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 14 September 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe Patti Smith will get in this year, if only because she's the only person on the list they can justify having Melissa Etheridge deliver some gushing, utterly ignorant and embarrassing intro speech for.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Sunday, 14 September 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, you know Michael Stipe's got dibs on THAT speech.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 14 September 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

the george harrison nomination is certainly interesting inasmuch as he's been eligible for a decade, and the only thing that's new is that he's dead. and it's not as if his was an underground career that was just recently discovered. i mean he was a beatle. and he had big solo hits. so this is conclusive evidence that the hall of fame has an affirmative action program for dead people. this isn't surprising or anything. it's just nice to have scientific proof.

it was particularly dastardly of them to *not* nominate him last year, his first year of death eligibility. it's as if they were trying to cover up their tracks by not crassly nominating him so soon. instead they just crassly nominated him a little bit later.

will barry sanders wear his oklahoma state jersey to the ceremony?

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 16 January 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

If the Coug makes it (and I don't see why he shouldn't), perhaps he could play "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.," and every living performer namechecked in the song could stand on stage and sing "we were rockin'" in the appropriate spots.
