"I dunno how that was such a big hit, but I'm glad it was"

One of the sentiments from the O Superman C/D thread seems to be a mixture of disbelief and happiness that the song did as well as it did. What other Top 10 hits can you think of that fit that mould? I'd add Ghosts by Japan to the list, for a start.

Damian (Damian), Sunday, 14 September 2003 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

By now probably everyone knows Joy Division had two #1 singles in New Zealand, now that I remember.

Damian (Damian), Sunday, 14 September 2003 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The Chills "I Love My Leather Jacket" was also an improbable top five hit in NZ.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Sunday, 14 September 2003 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

As was the Screaming MeeMees 'See Me Go'debuting at NZ number one. Dead Kennedy's 'Too Drunk to Fuck' hit top 10 here as well.

Bill E (bill_e), Sunday, 14 September 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I really grown to HATE whenever anybody says "to the thread," but....

Chumbawamba to the thread.

chuck, Sunday, 14 September 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

wah! there goes my 'chuck e to thread!' post...

NZ is all about "Lie Dream of a Casino Soul".

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 15 September 2003 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

anthony, didn't the first one of "those hits prince had sort of the delate the shock of the rest a bit?

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 September 2003 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

aka the "grindin" theory

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 September 2003 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

it should be remembered too that dirty mind did not do as well as the first two at the time, although it did cross him over

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 September 2003 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Here's Johnny" by Hocus Pocus (?) went to no.1 here - the high water mark for hardcore techno.

Wasn't 'Totally Wired' by The Fall a big hit in NZ?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 15 September 2003 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

possibly. there must be some reason that the Fall were the only non-NZ group put out by Flying Nun until the mid 90s

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 September 2003 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha whooooooever you are I wanna thank you you let me change lanes while I was driving in my car

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 15 September 2003 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(ok, not a big hit, but i do remember it being played on top 40 radio briefly, and in retrospect.. wtf? why not the residents next?)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 15 September 2003 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno about Totally Wired, but Lie Dream Of A Casino Soul was a Top 20 single here in NZ.

Damian (Damian), Monday, 15 September 2003 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah totally wired was too. so what tho, neither of them ever got played on the radio

duane, Monday, 15 September 2003 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

heaps of indy shit made the top 40 in new zealand back in those days.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 15 September 2003 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't the clean go top 10 like every week?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 September 2003 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"heaps", nah man it was like 2 joy division songs, 2 fall songs, that screamin meemees one, 1st couple clean records...that's about it far as i recall

duane, Monday, 15 September 2003 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

leather jacket did alright, so did pink frost, hey and didn't she speeds too?

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 15 September 2003 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Chumbawamba seconded. Someone tried to convince me that it was the best selling single of all time recently (not factoring in inflation, or something).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 15 September 2003 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

KLF - It's Grim Up North
How did this even chart? It's just plain noise with Jerusalem at the end. Still great though.

Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again Naturally
A number one song that starts with suicidal contemplation and quickly goes through dead parents and marriage breakups. I don't think we'd be seeing this from R Kelly.

dog latin, Monday, 15 September 2003 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Baz Luhrman's atrocious sunscreen shit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 15 September 2003 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 15 September 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

How well did "Blue Room" do in the charts?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 15 September 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still kind of amazed that "Justified and Ancient" was even made.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

.. but once it was, its sucess was inevitable, yes?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Not really.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

'music box dancer'

but just mystified)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Blue Room did go Top 10, I'm sure. Windowlicker very nearly did...
