just picked up Ghetto Music and heard some of Black Rhythm Happening in the store. wonderful mix of gospel, folk, spiritual jazz, and some out/free playing. sounds like Art Ensemble of Chicago, Max Roach, Sun Ra

wonderful albums. i suggest you check them out.

you guys are missing out. this is complete ILM jazz material. he's played w/cecil taylor & sun ra. read some reviews at Dustygroove

and look at the album covers. the first one reminds me of Parliament's first one

I used to have 'Black Rhythm Happening' on a compliation called 'Blue Note 60s' or something. It is good, I wish I still had it. A bit like Sesame Street.

I almost bought one of his albums on a whim last night after seeing it compared to Bobby Hutcherson's Now.

Will put these on the shopping list.

Hutcherson's Now! is one of my alltime favorite albums ever! i was just in the store on monday and glad to see it finally got reissued to cd.

The eddie gale albums are very similar to the hutcherson album, but they're a little more folk, gospel and free. the hutcherson sorta reminds me of a really dark jazz musical. very similar to Now! is max roach's 'It's Time'.

Sound clips and descriptions/reviews sound awesome. Not sure how I missed it.

Ghetto Music is one of my most cherished records (yet I've never managed to hear Black Rhythm Happening; doesn't seem to be on streaming right now)

RIP, what a champ.

he was present on two of my very favorite records: cecil taylor's "unit structures" and sun ra's "lanquidity"

his solo records on blue note are lovely, funky, strange things. eclectic to a fault maybe, but i have the 45 single of "black rhythm happening" and love playing it out, love the boisterous refrain, the back and forth, just pure black rhythm joy.

I didn't even realize he was on Lanquidity, damn
