Well?

What's come out this year and your not dissapointed by? It's as good as you were expecting or better?

mei (mei), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm more thankful that there's a new Kraftwerk album than disappointed by it.

Damian (Damian), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I fully expected to be let down by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, and I wasn't.

And at the risk of beating a, by this point, very dead horse, I believe the Killing Joke 2003 album has absolutely NO right being as good as it turned out to be (and you should all rush out and get it). I was not disappointed at all, but rather pleasantly elated.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Chicks on Speed's 99cents is every bit as good as I was expecting and I didn't even know they were making one!

mei (mei), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I was fully expecting to be underwhelmed or entirely non-plussed by the Darkness, but sadly I love it.

dog latin, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I was really expecting the new Fountains of Wayne to follow their late 90s alt-pop peers into hideous AOR fuckery, but thankfully it's probably their best to date.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I was pleasantly surprised by the Four Tet and Firewater albums. Gillian Welch's "Soul Journey" was as good as I'd expected it would be.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay! Firewater get mentioned by someone other than me, for a change!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I second Killing Joke.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots this year... Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Martina Topley-Bird, Girls Aloud, Black Box Recorder and The Raveonettes for five.

Strokes

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The Songs:Ohia album has blown me away this year, and nothing else has come anywhere close to it. Total classic.

captain badass, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

elbow and future bible heroes

blue (blue), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The Rapture, Outkast, Basement Jaxx, Mya, Massive Attack, Radiohead.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Initially thought BBR were gonna let me down after the first couple of listens... really shouldn't have worried. Half the Girls Aloud album is a rather large disappointment, the other half is a wonderful surprise. So on average, that qualifies too. Hunches album just as good as they were live, though it flags a little towards the end. All Girl Summer Fun Band had me shimmying for a month solid whilst doing the washing up (socks + plastic flooring + tweeeee = yes). Electric Music AKA are exactly the same as they've always been. Cat Power was also great, BSP disappointed in bits but overall still held it together, SFA did a damn lovely SFA album, expect MC Mabon did it better, Junior Senior & The Hidden Cameras just plain blew me away.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

...high hopes for Erykah Badu

As she has no idea what she's doing, there is hope.

Venus Glow (1411), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't seen the new Herman Dune record get any love anywhere, so maybe here's a good place to mention it. Didn't have high hopes, as the last one was it bit weak... but it's perfect.

Jason J, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

captain badass is so right about songs:ohia! i loved my morning jacket and rainer maria . i was prepared to dislike postal service and was very pleasantly surprised.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that the Radiohead might be a bit of a letdown, but after coming back to it post-hype it holds up shockingly well.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Earthquake Glue exceeded (already high) expectations.

David Gates of Delirium, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanted so bad to not like the My Morning Jacket disk cuz of all the hype (take whatever hype most of y'all have been exposed to then multiply x100, and you'll understand the level of hype they get here in Kentucky), but fucking ay mang!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

mu's 'afro finger and gel' has been consistantly blowing my mind since i got it earlier this year, as has 'twinkle echo' by casiotone for the painfully alone.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The Dears - No Cities Left is still going strong for me.

Xii (Xii), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I held off buying the Postal Service record for months because I thought the idea of a Death Cab IDM side project was entirely too awful to comprehend. I love the album. Kanye West's I'm Good mixtape (the first one I heard) and the Mars Volta album exceeded my already high expectations. After a few listens, I'm seriously loving the new Spiritualized and Rapture joints. Oh, and the new Grand Buffet EP is a fucking monster, easily the best thing they've ever done, completely inspired from start to finish, and I didn't even know they had a new one out till I saw them last month.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Them International Telepaths rock. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Elephant is the album I was most worried about, and I think it turned out brilliantly.

Also, I am one of the few that think Pig Lib by SM and Jicks is great, a huge step over the disappointing first album.

For rap, Killer Mike's Monster is amazing, esp. because I was worried that he might be one of those guys that uses the same flow on every song (his Whole World and first single - can't remember the name flow) The album is very diverse and excellent

For future possible disappointments, I am very worried about OutKast, US Maple, and Jay-Z's Black Album, three records I have ludicrously high expecations for....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Cat Power. I also have high hopes for the Pine Valley Cosmonaut's album I bought today.

Ben Dot, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally expected to not like Elephant at all, but it certainly does rocketh verily.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

the rapture, basement jaxx, led zeppelin, drive-by truckers, radiohead, the white stripes, the yeah yeah yeahs, bubba sparxxx, dizzee rascal, monade, "diminishing returns pt. 2" ('pt. 1' belongs on the other thread) eh, hundreds of others I'm sure (it's been a great year for music)

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Broadcast Haha sound
wow i had no exspectations!

Jens (brighter), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Since it's the second thread to sport the words, I'd like to say isn't it "disappointed BY" and not "disappointed OF" ?

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Dannii's Neon Nights was always going to be a singles-u-like plus Kylie-a-like cast-off filler. And then it turned out to be a Saturn sized, nu-disco stormer. 400 km/ph in the wrong lane.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Medicine's "The Mechanical Forces of Love."

I was un-disappointed in the Spiritualized upon first blush, then disappointed--it seemed like Jason was just doing schtick--but now, on revisiting it, I'm un-disappointed again.

Yay Nick Southall, for being not disappointed by Outkast. Despite the fact I can't be said to share the fevered "expectation" of others, I'm somehow hopeful for it still, and refuse to d/l ahead of time.

M Specktor (M Specktor), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

have high hopes for:
Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu has an album on the cards?! Excellent.

White Stripes was odd, I wasn't expecting the good bits (Seven Nation Army, The Hardest Button To Button) to be quite so good but neither was I expecting the bad bits to be so fucking boring (the bit in the middle).

The brilliance of the tATu and Broadcast albums were huge surprises.

I thought it was 'disappointed with'... or maybe 'disappointed in'. Gah, preposition confusion.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Since it's pedant season, I'll go with "disappointed with" also.

lupine lupin (lupinelupin), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

A funny year, as those who released my faves of 2002 (Deerhoof, Costello, Consonant, ENON) put out another this year. Only Deerhoof really met my expectations. I was surprised to like the Notwist record as much as I have (or was that technically '02?)
Also: Buzzcocks, Stereolab's ABC Music (have never been a big Stereolab fan), and Four Tet.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I got exactly what I expected from the Gang Starr album. Plus the artwork is the shit too with all the graffiti and old speakers and such. Thats the only album this year that I've really looked forward to. Anyone heard the new Canibus? 'v'been hearin' good things bout that one. Still waiting on the Morbid Angel. It comes out two days before a close friend of mine leaves for military shit. A good new album is what I'll need. I hope its as good as the last one.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

OTM about Consonant....I like that first one so much it's almost scary...the new one has some good songs (dumb joy, lost together, esp), but it seems a little flat...Also, the production is kind of dingy.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't seen the new Herman Dune record get any love anywhere, so maybe here's a good place to mention it. Didn't have high hopes, as the last one was it bit weak... but it's perfect.

It is truly great, my drooling review should be up on Stylus within the next few days. They're even better live, though.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it should be "Albums you were appointed with".

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I was all ready to hate the new Steve Malkmus album, but damn him, it's fantastic and worlds better than anything he's done in recent memory. Also, the new Magic Dirt is a refreshing step back towards their old guitar noise, and I really thought they were finished after the sell-out attempt of "What Are Rock Stars Doing Today" (excepting Dirty Jeans). Happy that the Clientele maintined their quality, and surprised by how good the second Tyde album is.

dlp9001, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and re: the upcoming US Maple album, there's an mp3 posted on the drag city site. It sounds...kind of coherent, but after four listens I'm liking it. But, it's hard to judge out of the context of an album (and w/mp3 quality...sorry but US Maple need good sound to work). I'm not only worried about their music, but about whether their die-cut, 3D, talking, radium plated album art will live up to previous efforts.

dlp9001, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

GREENDALE! GREENDALE! GREENDALE!

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"I also have high hopes for the Pine Valley Cosmonaut's album I bought today."

And very good it is too. The less said the better about the Franz Ferdinand and Manitoba EP's I bought at the same time though...

Ben Dot, Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Radiohead, George, Dizzee Rascal, Kristin Hersh, Nina Nastasia

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The second Crydamoure was, in its way, probably even better than the first one. And Basement Jaxx are obviously running shit right now.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll third the Hermann Dune mention- i'm playing it right now coincidently.

Also very, very good is the Seedling album Let's Play Boys & Girls

Officer Pupp, Wednesday, 17 September 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I only d/l'd Outkast so I can have a review ready for the release day. Honest guv!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Liz Phair. White Stripes.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Canibus - Rip The Jacker

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 18 September 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Wildchild - Secondary Protocol

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 18 September 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was 'disappointed with'... or maybe 'disappointed in'. Gah, preposition confusion.

-- The Lex (alex_macpherso...), September 16th, 2003.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since it's pedant season, I'll go with "disappointed with" also.

-- lupine lupin (lupinelupi...), September 16th, 2003.

I'm with the grammar pedants, but I cloned the title from the 'dissapointed with' thread.

mei (mei), Thursday, 18 September 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

where is there decent info about eryka's new record ?
her websites are all 'on hip hop time'.

piscesboy, Thursday, 18 September 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the quality this year coupled with the uncanny persistence of my own motivation and enthusiasm for new releases has been the most pleasant surprise this year

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 September 2003 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

-Cat Power, You Are Free (still my favorite album of 2003, though I haven't yet heard Speakerboxxx/The Love Below--can't wait!!!)
-The New Pornographers, Electric Version (though I still love Mass Romantic slightly more)
-The Microphones, Mount Eerie (wow, an arty concept that doesn't suck. at all.)
-Northern State, Dying in Stereo (heard about them for months before picking this up--it's great!)
-The Sounds, Living in America (so much fun!)

Josh Timmermann (Josh Timmermann), Thursday, 18 September 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

autechre - draft 7.30 (exactly what I expected, an autechre album right after confield)
plaid - parts in the post (after relative mehness of double fig. and p-brane, this)
four tet - rounds (dialogue and pause were ok)
bardo pond - on the ellipse ('every man' is worth it alone)

Leee (Leee), Friday, 19 September 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Albums that I got in 2003 at least partly because of ILM that I haven't been disappointed with:

New Pornographers - "Electric Version"
Postal Service - "Give Up"
Sean Paul - "Dutty Rock"
Calexico - "Feast of Wire"
Matthew Shipp - "Equilibrium"

Albums that I like, but am still slightly disappointed with:

Cat Power - "You Are Free"
Stephen Malkmus - "Pig Lib"
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Fever to Tell"

Other albums that I haven't read about on ILM that I haven't been disappointed with:

V/A - "Masada Anniversary Edition Vol 2: Voices in the Wilderness"
Donna Summer - "This Needs to Be Your Style"
Steve Lacy - "The Beat Suite"
