FORCE TRACKS

FT 59 ~ Various Artists ~ 'Digital Disco 2' ~ CD
http://shop.force-inc.com/jump.php4?aid=FT059

It's been a year since FORCE TRACKS launched the critically acclaimed
DIGITAL DISCO compilation series. A reinvention of house music, DIGITAL
DISCO brings together a combination of sophisticated depth, soul,
lyrical
narrative, and of course the uplifting energy that disco characterized
back
to the dance floor. Now, the series returns in full splendor featuring
13
tracks from a line of the label's past, present and future members.
DIGITAL
DISCO manages to sound both retro and futuristic, while remaining
brilliantly inventive and danceable. Here's to some of the highlights -
many
of FORCE TRACKS biggest tracks of this summer get reworked (see DUB
TAYLOR &
VITAL, LUOMO and AKUFEN), D;EXTER frontman of the Billboard chart
topping
act SOUND FACTORY returns with the quintessential house crooner of the
season redone by Sweden's peak-time pleaser ADJUSTER. IAN POOLEY
returns
back to the FORCE INC. family with a memorable excursion flavorfully
reminiscent of his Chicago inspired early productions. Of late,
MOONBOOTICA
have established themselves as Germany's leading remix act and give
DIGITAL
DISCO a gritty makeover with their impression of LUOMO's classic
TESSIO,
plus an exclusive cut that will make PLAYGROUP fans squeal with
pleasure. As
disco currently reinvents itse lf in many different reincarnations and
trends, DIGITAL DISCO is here to quench your thirst with a dose of
sassy,
sexy music from the top drawer.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it looks pretty good, but will it be as MASSIVELY UNEVEN as the last one.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

actually the last one wasn't even that MASSIVELY UNEVEN, just sequenced really poorly...or maybe it was impossible to sequence those tracks well.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm don't recall actively disliking anything other than the pointless Nu Shooz cover but some of it was fairly bleh. you're probably right about the sequencing.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Moonbootica remix of "Tessio" is one of my favourite tracks this year.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a bit blah if you ask me. i nicked the promo off anna a couple of weeks ago, but i've only heard it twice since then. possibly i'm being unfair, cos i've not been in a microhouse mood much lately. i'll give it another listen tomorrow morning and report back...

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a little disappointed that Astrobal isn't on this... "Magic Lady" was probably my second favorite from the last one.

adam west (adamwest), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

direct_program, Thursday, 18 September 2003 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

What Siegbran said about the Moonbootica Tessio remix. Knocks the original into a cocked hat.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 18 September 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I still don't really get the whole idea of "digital disco;" the last comp felt like a name in search of a style. Nothing really lived up to the concept, except perhaps Metro Area -- and that very inclusion seemed to suggest that Force Inc was no longer leading, but casting about for already-successful acts and poaching them for their own theoretical ends. Haven't heard this one yet, so can't comment on it, but I have yet to be convinced of the validity of "digital disco" itself.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 18 September 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of the first comp just struck me as embryonic house with much better production values, which is hardly as radical as people make it out to be. Agreed abut Force Inc, but they're a very different label now than, say, ten years ago aren't they.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 18 September 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked the last comp a lot but only coz i liked the tracks on it in a disjointed one-by-one kinda way, not as a cohesive compilation. i mean there's really not a lot binding data 80 (perhaps one of my fave albums in ages - so syrup-sweet and cute that listening to it turns the whole world pastel pink) and metro area together, now is there? the moonbootica remix of tessio is an absolute gem, toby. it's not microhouse at all and it absolutely rocks a dancefloor mixed into anita ward's ring my bell!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the moonbootica remix of tessio is an absolute gem, toby.

agreed.

i made it 7 tracks into this earlier, but i gave up due to lack of interest. hmmm.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh don't let me put you off

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 18 September 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that "Disco Discovery" and especially "The Present Lover" sounded very much like what I thought "digital disco" would be, but then nothing else really did. Like what others have said it felt like a half-failure if only because there was nothing tying everything together.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 19 September 2003 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Then there was that awful final track.

Magic Lady is still absolutely classic though.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 19 September 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan how can you love "Magic Lady" and hate "Movie Star"? "Magic Lady" is better obv but they I wouldn't be surprised if they were by the same person.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 19 September 2003 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

They could be, I never looked at the tracklist!

The only track which felt like "microhouse", or what I thought that term would be, was that toy tech-house track, number 8 I think.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 19 September 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

discopatterntester I think

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 19 September 2003 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you listened to "The Present Lover" on earphones Ronan?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 19 September 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes all the time and I absolutely love it! Should that feel micro?

Don't get me wrong I really like Digital Disco and I really liked what I heard of Luomo in our own michael w's place a while back, I just think I'd have to fly to London to buy it cos the shops here are so crap.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 19 September 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

oh dear, ronan. you've gone all tasteful! moviestar is the gayest (in every sense of the word), sparkliest, funniest and sweetest track on the album. i'd have loved it if the sequencing had managed to make a smoother progression from something as all-round classy as disco discovery to this level of kitsch - now that would have been a triumph...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

moviestar is way more tasteful than the shite I like trust me Dave.

I love the way Magic Lady almost made Digital Love style squealing guitar solos tasteful.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i bet you money i have waaaaaaay worse records in my collection than you! ;)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

you've probably got more for free so you might win.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

oh no, i had to pay for a lot of the really bad ones... it's a fun thing to do when at car boot sales/charity shops... hunt down terrible records for 10/20p a pice and then pretend to your friends that you like them...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad to see the "Magic Lady" love, that was always my favorite. Comp. sequels in general I have a hard time getting excited about.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 19 September 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you sure Astrobal is not on this one?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 19 September 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow that Moonbotica mix of "Tessio" really is amazing. Much better than the version on The Present Lover!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 20 September 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah! I heard it last night before I saw DJ Assault

Keith McD (Keith McD), Saturday, 20 September 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i read as that dj assault played it at first and i was over the moon

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 September 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

haha if I could be bothered I'd write out the lyrics and change them to include 'ass' & 'titties' & 'booty' or whatever

Keith McD (Keith McD), Saturday, 20 September 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
I walked right by this at Amoeba the other day I think because the cover is so awful/cheap. Seriously, they should have just contacted me! (in fact, I think I'll contact them).

That said, the tunes are great!
