we all know the drill: on one hand you've got dire young "beat combos" like idlewild ,travis et al,boring as shite, ugly bastards the lot but with stacks of indie cred - frankly i have more glamour in my little finger (although to be fair to the boys it's a pretty fucking glamourous little finger),and on the other hand we have daphne and celeste, who have the lot: attitude, glamour and killer hooks. i know which i'd choose. so come on people which would you rather have: STYLE or SUBSTANCE?

Both. Both being where you find it, I find a whole range of examples old and new to choose from. :-) I would say more, but lunch calls...

Yeah, I agree with Ned in that Travis &c. plainly have NO SUBSTANCE AT ALL, not to mention the sense of style in a lot of our young folks' pop stars is plainly lacking cf. Britney's Flesh Bikini. My long sufferance of twatty lodgers with pencil arms and an addiction to muscle-building powder compounds who read THE FACE from cover to cover has left me terminally suspicious of sTyLe in all its forms. On the other hand substance sounds a bit like constipation to me. So can you put me down as neither??

Daphne and Celeste! DAPHNE AND CELESTE! Good GOD! The new Shampoo, anyone? Girl group pop for indie kids who sneer at Britney and Craig David. They're, like so cool 'cos they, like *subvert* the idea of girl pop. BALLS!

_objection #1_ "we all know the drill"-- "we"? what, like "we" the english-slash-anglophiles? yes, lovely to admire *that* attitude through history . . .

_objection #2_ you assume *I* think "substance" means boredom and "indie cred".

And so, my first objection was to the style of what you said, and the second was to the substance. The first is just bitchy and the second is sincere.
