That Arab Strap line is quite the ice-breaker. My choice : "How long before you realize you stink", off Mott The Hoople's Brain Capers.

"I don't wanna kiss you, I don't wanna touuuch"

Maybe not as impressive in print as the Arab Strap one -- I mean, he says COCK for Christ's sake, how cool is that? jk -- but you gotta love Elvis' delivery here.

" This next one is the first song on our new album. . ."

- Beastie Boys

Because not only did this record kick ass in terms of stretching the Beastie's own style of hip hop (in a time when it wasn't all that it is today) they sampled Cheap Trick live at Budokan! Now THAT is an album!

From NWA's "Straight Outta Compton"!!!!!

The album's dated not too well these days, but wot an opening declaration!!!!!!

BTW why concentrate on albums alone?!? There's been some brillibobs singles with memorable opening linbes as well... (What a shame I can't remember any at the mo!!!!!)

Horses - Patti Smith

Omar, Friday, 26 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It's time that the tale were told / Of how you took a child and you made him old

Belligerent ghouls run Manchester schools / Spineless bastards all

Farewell to this land's cheerless marshes / Hemmed in like a boar between arches / Her very Lowness with a head in a sling / I'm truly sorry but it sounds like a wonderful thing

I am the ghost of a troubled joe hung by his pretty white neck / Some eighteen months ago I travelled to a mystical time zone / And I missed my bed and I soon came home

Sorry to go on; but thinking about those four opening salvos has just made me want to go home and listen to the Smiths' albums being played one after the other, really loud.

Nick Dastoor, Friday, 26 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

'Opening salvos' - that's a horrible cliché. Sorry.

Nick, Friday, 26 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm glad somebody brought up that Patti Smith opening line - "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine" has to be the most annoying one ever - has any other line begged harder for a resounding "WHO CARES ??". She should have started by saying "hello, I'm Patti Smith and I'm pretentious" and gotten it over with.

Patrick, Friday, 26 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

My my...pretention, that's the whole point of Patti Smith, innit? It still stands as the greatest statement of intent in the history of rock 'n roll. Then again I'm not that impressed with those opening salvo's by The Smiths (I feel a Classic or Dud coming up ;)

Omar, Friday, 26 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah, pretention was probably the point. Plus I love Patti's "Piss Factory", and it's not like that's any less pretentious. I guess I just find "I'm gonna move out of here, I'm gonna be a big star" a more likable sentiment than declarations that Jesus didn't die for Patti's sins.

Patrick, Friday, 26 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Please allow me to introduce myself / I'm a man of wealth and taste" ('Beggar's Banquet' - The Rolling Stones)

"I wrote a poem on a dog biscuit / And your dog refused to look at it" ('This Is Our Music' - Galaxie 500

"I was surprised / I was happy for a day in 1975" ('Tigermilk' - Belle & Sebastian)

OK, it might sound *so* annoyingly Belle & Sebastian to you, but in 1996 (well, 1997 for me) this breathy, unaccompanied opening line seemed the perfect introduction to a new, joyful, refreshing chapter in pop music. In its own way, as bold a statement of intent as there has ever been.

I was going to contribute to this all properly like, then I saw what la Dastoor had written: and it couldn't really be topped. Mind you,

I LEFT THE NORTH

the pinefox, Thursday, 22 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

And, erm, from whence does that come, Pinefox?

(BTW the answer to my earlier teaser: the album is XTC's "Skylarking", the song is "Summer's Cauldron", and the first line is "Drowning here in summer's cauldron").

Robin Carmody, Friday, 23 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It's the first line of LOUDER THAN BOMBS - OK, not a proper album, I know - I was just edging towards completism on Dastoor's line of thinking...

the pinefox, Monday, 26 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Thanks. Is "I LEFT THE NORTH" metaphorical / autobiographical for you, Pinefox?

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 27 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm afraid not. Nothing as interesting as that. I hardly even left the South. I do think it's a good opening line, though - esp. in a Morrissey / Smiths context. (That's not to say it's as good as his other opening lines. I mean, I like the song, but it's relatively middling work, non?)

BASS! How low can you go? Death row, what a brother know ...

Jake Becker, Thursday, 1 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Of course for me London is up North. The equivalent for me would be "I left the far South again, I travelled North again" (and the North being London).

Oh and Jake, strictly speaking the first line is "London, England, consider yourself WARNED!". Which is how I feel most times I'm there :).

My favourite first line is 'yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah, no no no no' by New York Dolls. Why is it pretentious for Patti Smith to say 'Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine', whereas Iggy says 'I'm a streetwalking cheetah with a hide full of napalm' and it's not pretentious? That's not a rhetorical question - I find P. Smith's lyrics a little studied. Maybe cos Iggy's lyrics are funny!! Nick Dastoor or somebody, what are the rules for the use of 'fill' and 'full'?

I've done so many albums now that my first lines, all put together, make a novel. Well, an epic poem:

Once upon a time there was a man called Saul who persecuted Christians
He shows up at the party in a pair of dark glasses his grandfather wore in the war
God is a tender pervert and the angels are voyeurs
Trust me, I'm a doctor
Nobody is evil, nobody is good
I come from the jungle, from Popacatapetl
Take a voyage through the heart of darkness, to the sound of violins
The villains of vaudeville, young lovers' quarrels
If I told the truth I'd like to live my life again
I was born on a dashboard, toothbrush for a head
When you caress your little cat and stroke me with your hand
Ping pong the album, comedy cabaret
I went with a friend of mine I hadn't seen in years to a party
Mad music, sad music, totally bad and crazy music
Appalachian mountain girl, coming home to me
We are the pirates, we sail in silence
The man from the north enters the tube
Moop bears in the thunder, moop bears on the idiot sea
