TS: 50 Cent vs Obie Trice

This question might really be "In Da Club" vs "Got Some Teeth".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 September 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know that I've heard enough Obie yet to reckon fully, but I'm willing to speculate that I might end up liking him more in the long run. He seems looser, funnier, more versatile -- and his "Drugs, Jobs Homeless" song kind of kicks my ass.

But then he seems short on sheer charisma, which 50 positively seethes. I mean, Obie's much more a clear fit for Shady Records -- punchline-heavy, technically sharp, sort of a goofball with a confessional streak -- than 50 is. But 50 Cent is a lot more fun to think about, and there's just something about his records that makes them hard to put out of your head.

If it's "In Da Club" vs "Got Some Teeth", then it's got to be "In Da Club" every time. "Got Some Teeth" is nowhere near as strong, production or lyrics wise.

Can't really say much else till 'cheers' sinks in and 'beg for mercy' drops.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Friday, 19 September 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

How many times has Obie been shot, again?

Fascinated White Man (Keiko), Friday, 19 September 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

none....yet

Obie

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 19 September 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What makes the production on "Got Some Teeth" weaker than the production on "In Da Club"?

Also, where is 50 Cent hiding this alleged charisma?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 September 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, where is 50 Cent hiding this alleged charisma?

A lot of it actually comes out in interviews, where he's surprisingly self-effacing and funny. (The issue of XXL he "guest edited" is a good example of this.)

To state the obvious, you can't define charisma, I guess, or make someone else see it. But it somehow comes out in the tension between his overall gestalt of badassery and then the funny, almost wry asides that keep popping up. (This is more obvious on a lot of the bootleg material, on which he's genuinely hilarious much of the time.)

Ess, Friday, 19 September 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

did anyone see the (alledged: following is hearsay) 50 cent interview in which, in response to being asked what his name meant, he replied "50 cent a metaphor for change."? i really want to believe that it's true ...

i have not heard Obie. My hip hop is sadly limited to mainstream radio as of late.

50 is fucking amazing. . .Charms the pants right offa me. . .

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 19 September 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I like "got some teeth" alot but "in da club" trumps it easy (will have to hear more obie trice for the larger question)

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 19 September 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought "got some teeth" was pharoahe monch the first couple of times i heard it. i'll still take "in da club" first, but if obie trice can deliver a couple more good singles, everybody wins

rob geary (rgeary), Saturday, 20 September 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

what the heck happened to pharaohe monch anyway?

rob geary (rgeary), Saturday, 20 September 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan

IDC is a 6'3'' brick shithouse of a beat. It's menacing, those higher string stabs are like punchbag splitting body blows.

GST is a little cartoonesque, ina good way. I like it better than most recent hip-hop but it hasn't "got that vibe" as montell would say.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Saturday, 20 September 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob,

Pharaohe monch is held up in label problems. Rawkus got taken over/merged with Geffen, which means 15 fat suits worried only about money have got to approve everything. hence the snails pace of Rawkus.

50 cent is the best in the game right now...fuck jay z yeah i said it...he went from mix tape obscurity to having his album scrapped to being the biggest most important recording artist in the world...man im feeling obie's album 'cheers' alot but they're in a different league 50's the king. one good thing about obie's album tho is that em has better verses and beats than on 50's, check his verse on 'we all die one day' compare it to 'patiently waiting' and em kills it on beat and rhymes hand down! his verse crazy! oh yeh check for man lloyd banks dudes 'best of' album hits hard

50 is the biggest in the game right now, I wouldn't support a claim that he's the best.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Saturday, 20 September 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"Got Some Teeth" is amazing!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 22 September 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the answer of course is to listen to obie's great "we all die one day", featuring 50 cent.

shutup, Monday, 22 September 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i like 'got some teeth', but its a little overbusy and underhooky, isnt it?

wait, it's growing on me as i type.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 22 September 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

it'd be kinda sad if em delegated all the shady cartoonishness to obie and focused on the dark orchestral melodramatic stuff (much as i like a good deal of it)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 22 September 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I think I like Obie's rapping more than Eminem's arrangement (which is great obv - like "Gossip Folks" colliding with "Frontier Psychiatrist" while a marching band wanders past), his voice is so wonderfully *damaged*, like when he says "booty everywhere" and his voice trembles slightly. Also - "It just wouldn't look right! Me: big lips! You: no teeth!"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 22 September 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about the "In Da Club" beat is that it doesn't take any risks. It's a straightforward club beat (shocker given the song, hah) that sounds fantastic pumping through loud speakers. "Got Some Teeth", on the other hand, careens all over the place like one of those crazy-car midway rollercoasters but STILL would sound fantastic pumping through loud club speakers.

Both are good songs, but when I want to dance I really want to hear madness and dementia, ergo "Got Some Teeth" wins easily for me.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 September 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

OKAY.

Captain Sleep (Captain Sleep), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps a better comparison would be "In Da Club" vs "The Set Up", ie. both Dre beats.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

six years pass...

Just discovered "Rap Name" recently thanks to it getting mentioned on the "dated Eminem references" thread. Pretty good! Hard to imagine a moment where he was plausibly the commercial/critical equal of 50 Cent, I guess that's sorta like how people say Madonna and Cyndi Lauper seemed neck-and-neck at one point.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 7 May 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i wouldn't give obie trice even that much credit

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 May 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

Eh, Obie was never anywhere near 50 Cent; the public didn't like him at all.

Also re: 50's charisma, the point upthread about it coming out in his interviews is very OTM but I wish I had felt it in his music.

it means "EMOTIONAL"! (HI DERE), Friday, 7 May 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)
