yes, it's extremely similar to everything else they've recorded. so its OK but difficult to get excited about unless you're already convinced they're godhead.

cranky!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 19 September 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I like it better than their last few records--better hooks, more directed. I've been playing it a lot.

;-)

It's too goddamn timid. It has great ideas but chooses to bunt them instead of grand slam them. :(

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

this is different from Stereolab historically in what way, exactly?

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

OK I know I'm being a dick here, and I apologize. I actually like Stereolab and I like the new EP too. But they are the most frustrating band for the reasons DB mentions--they always seem right on the verge of turning into the monster-groove machine they have in them, and they always seem to back off from it. I know their purpose is to do exactly what they're doing now, and they get very pretty at times, and sometimes that's enough. But it's like watching an underachiever keep patting themselves on the back for being one long after everyone's gotten the point.

What I want to know is - how much do they miss Mary Hansen? She gave the band a variety of voices, and as much as I love Stereolab, I'd find them more interesting if they had another singer alongside Laetitia, and it's always been that way, so the prospect of just one singer in the band is a little worrying to me, I dunno.

Damian (Damian), Friday, 17 October 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Damian - I've wondered the same thing. Also: I still haven't heard this new EP, and even though I'm a big fan I don't know if I'll ever get around to buying it - there's so much other stuff to pursue - but for years I've kind of hoped that something huge/life-altering would happenb to them to shake them out of this musical rut, to make them change their tune, maybe find new producers, etc. When Mary died I was as sad as anyone else, but hoped the tragedy would at least change Tim and L's approach somewhat if not spell the end of the band (which would have been an acknowledgment of the importance of Mary's role) but fromw hat I've been reading on this thread, ain't a damn thing changed.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 17 October 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

nope, nothing's changed, but Mary's "influence" is very noticeable. a lot of L's vocals sound just like Mary. it's gonna be in a live context where they'll miss her presence most obviously.

File 'em under "bands that could really use a greatest-hits"--I put together a CD-R a year or so ago of all of their singles in reverse chronological order, and couldn't stop playing it for weeks. (I don't think it'd have worked nearly as well in regular chronological order.)
