CCR vs. Hippies

OK, heres a question been bugging me for a while. I know a lot of hippies hated CCR (one loooooser hair farmer who ONLY collected Led Zep as his sole music told me so personally.) I know CCR hated hippies- at least John Fogerty, who I read making fun of JerryfuckinGarcia for having bad songwriting because he smoked so many drugs, then explained he took a workman/craftsman approach to music instead, and called CCR "working class". I can totally see that in songs like "fortunate son" which totally rocks. And I can see why hippies got stung by that apt criticism. So, I'm wondering, what kind of criticism did the hair farmers put on CCR? I can guess one- the fact they were from california but adopted the southern bayou swampy thing. (Which totally pales in comparison to the typical hippie india mysticism bullshit pose.) Also, this loooooser hair farmer Zep nerd told me "I don't like the way they play their instruments" whatever that means. So, can anyone explain anything else about the hippie vs. CCR feud?

CCR was too black for 'em.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Monday, 22 September 2003 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

if hippies were hostile to CCR and john fogerty, then i imagine it was because fogerty talked shit about them. just like zappa got hostility from hippies because FZ talked shit about them (and wrote songs where he talked even more shit about hippies).

not that fogerty and zappa were wrong, mind you, but not even hippies like it when people talk shit about them.

Man, hippies are not especially dear to me, but fuck CCR and FUCK Fogerty.

"hair farmer?"

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 22 September 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess CCR were a bit too "back to basics".
On the other hand, American hippie bands' exploration of the blues was too, but they had a considerably more "cosmic" was of approaching the blues than CCR did.

Of course, only a year or two later, The Band, Grateful Dead, CSNY and several others were all embracing country rock, and the hippies were all into the "roots" thing. CCR happened a bit too early though.

Rumor has it that Fogerty would ocasionally take a shower - hippies hate that.

CCR were from the 'wrong' side of the bay.

The biggest difference between a SF band and CCR is Fogerty finds out he is out of the army and doesn't have to go to Vietnam, so he writes "Proud Mary" the same day.

Never underestimate the power of commerical backlash, after all I'd imagine that CCR sold more records than probably ALL of those other SF bands combined, especially during the 60s.

Geir Hongro in not posting his usual bullshit shockah.
Or perhaps finding the right place for it.

Neil's a Canadian, isn't he?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 22 September 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-b-but hippies love CCR! Did you learn nothing from Big Lebowski?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 September 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

for some reason, i can't stand CCR. something about fogerty's style and voice that's just unbearable. though i'd love to hear more soul covers of his songs, because he could write a hook. plus, i really hate that guitar that looks like a baseball bat.

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 22 September 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

neil's a canadian but he GTFOOT long ago.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 22 September 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Geir is more or less right! CCR's back-to-basics aproach *was* a big part of why hippies hated 'em - short pop songs (yes they had jam sessions also, conventional r&r instrumentation, reverence and almost a wish to emulate Elvis, Little Richard, etc. = all things that hippies were trying to *get away* from. And yes, I imagine the fact that they sold records didn't help any either.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 22 September 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

add a ")" after also

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 22 September 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

CCR was a singles band. Hippies only listened to (bad) albums.

Burr (Burr), Monday, 22 September 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Dave's "shower" explanation the best. I'm going to repeat that any chance i get. Dave rocks!

sucka (sucka), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, those cliches about hippies, that's some cutting edge comedy.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

But the promofilm (video) of "Proud Mary" is really psychodelic.
