The Elite - My Confusion

not the most memorable track in the series, i'm not sure if i've ever played this one all the way through before... pretty "good" recording for back from the grave ok next

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Jujus - Do You Understand me

lower-fi, more menacing than the elite track nice tough guitar bit, the vocals kinda fading in and out sounds like he's making up the words as he goes along

oh break beat, now it's getting "heavy" with some bass runs i thought were dubbed-in motorcycle noises davy allen style,

some crashing sound could be drums

plodding but pretty tough ok out of time

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Alarm Clocks - Yeah

wow now this plodding! nice slow stomp, kind of in the "good morning lil schoolgirl" style

obligatory scream, he's no gerry rosalie

it's speeding up... i think they listened to shadows of knight "oh yeah" a lot, lots of overlapping Yeah yeah yeahs

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Alarm Clocks - nO Reason To Complain

starts off with the same "Walking Down The Street" opening line as YEah

Drums are totally Bob Bert Pussy Galore whomp-ka-whomp

this is more in the vein of 1-2-5 but less urgent, he keeps saying he's got no reason to complain! he sounds pissed off about that

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The Fabs - The Bag I'm In

Positively bouncy bass-line, but still kinda addams familyish... he's singing about his breakfast! first appearance of an organ on the record

"the only money I got is CHINESE YEN!"

it's a crazy mixed up world for the fabs, but that's the bag that's the bag that's the bag they're in!

my favourite so far

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The Malibus - Cry

ok other than the fabs, this could pretty much all be the same band so far... the singers especially alll sound the same... this is all 66 so who are they trying to sound like? it sure ain't mick or paul or john, it sounds more like a more-serious alice cooper but that don't make sense

another sullen stomp this one, they harnmonize on the CRYYY-YI-YI

ok ouitta time next

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Bel-Aires - ya Ha Be Be

surfy lots of chant-a-long gang vocals... fleshtones probably dug this one -

did girls cheat a lot in the sixties? these guys are all pissed off at their girlfriends for messin' around on em

oh man this one moves along pretty good... most uptempo song so far, nice dizzy organ-guitar interplay and lots of "HEY!" shouts

digs its own grave at the end

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The Legends - I'll Come Again

crappy singer even for this

whoah that guitar is outta tune

the organ is out of tune!

pretty good who-ho-ho back-up singin' - like the misfits!

i'll never listen to this song again

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

end of side one. smoke break. back in five.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Side Two

The Rats - Rats REvenge

oh now here's an old favourite

fucked if it doesn't still sound great.

it's basically farmer john

now it's the SUPER RATS! GIANT RATS! SKINNY RATS! SUPER RATS! bit

you'll learn to hate us you'll learn to despise us!

drumming is awful!

they lose it and start to crack up

TO WALK YOU HOME FROM SCHOOL!

and they're back talking about sewers

does he say "we need a better drummer!"?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Hatfields "Yes I Do" is a great song.

It is on Vol.1 of the CD version, so it may not be on this lp.

'We all love peanut butter.'

earlnash, Monday, 22 September 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Rats - Rats Revenge Part 2

they've got their shit together a little more by now.

"PART TWO, IT's NICE!"

the big spoken intro to the guitar solo, and then an anguished "ooooh!" when it comes in

they challenge you to a fight, at the supermarket at 5 o'clock but then say they're gonna chicken out!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the part where the Rats talk about picking a fight and then not showing up. Cuz that's awesome. That's punk rock.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

y'know, talking big but actually being chicken shit. THAT I can identify with.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

One Way Streets - We All Love Peanut Butter

a folk-rock parody? actually kind of pretty, at least after the rats. "maybe do a swan dive from a roof" - referring to the old acid "think you can fly" myth?

the tuff guitar comes in towards the end

nice tambourine

i've always loved this one too

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Larry and The Blue Notes - Night of the Phantom

the tome of this always reminded me of "mind playing tricks on me" by the geto boys

it kinda fades in & out

WHOO-HO_HOAAA YEAH!

it's a story song, like red sovine or something

the phantom turns and slowly walks away at the end, but HE'LL NEVER KNOW WHY!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

One Way Streets - Jack The Ripper

This is a screaming Lord Sutch song, isn't it? the white stripes did it when i saw em

no oomph to it, but that could be my sadsack stereo

not feeling it

it's just Peter Gunn

first time i've haven't run out of time writing

nothing special

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Swamp Rats - Psycho

ah, the sonics original is just better in every way, sorry swamp rats.
the singer does a pretty good job, and the guitar is pretty great but the bass is doing way too much

KEY CHANGE!

another useless cover like the last one, again not much more to say

and i hate when the other guy goes 'psycho psycho psycho' in a real fey trying-to be psycho voice

backwards tape thing at the end is better than everything else

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Cords - Ghost Power

Good fuzzed-out instrumental of the haunted house variety, with some crazy oscillation sound midway, pretty cool

feedback? or something sounds almost like a theremin

band gamely plays the most standard go go theme underneath all the nuttiness

nothing to complain about I guess, never played this one all the way thru before either

more crazy sound affects

the end

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe i'll do vol 2 in a bit

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

there was a folk-rock band from louisiana or ohio that did a cover of the one-way streets "we all love peanut butter" about 10-15 years ago...

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

checking amg it was the ass ponys (featuring a very Raggett-ian Ned Raggett review)
