Hammertime!

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"Parents Just Don't Understand" and "Summertime" much moreso than "Boom Shake the Room", I'd imagine.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

kriss kross will make yaaa...

minna (minna), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"8 Point Agenda", in my dreams.

"Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" and "My Name Is" in my reality.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

fresh prince of belle air

columns, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Not when you're 'rocking' in a UK student 'disco', Nick.

Also, 'Get Ur Freak On' with 'Work It' not far behind and 'Rapper's Delight'.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

You think Nickalicious? "BSTR" is a lot more singalongy.

Em, 50, etc, are a little too dextrous for most people I would have thought. For true rapalong status you have to look for pre-Wu Tang stuff, with a rhyming couplets. Hence the Fresh Prince is perfect.

Nick H, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

mc hammer - can't touch this

"I'm Gizzard Puke and you're not;
I'm better looking than Sid Snot.
As for Cupid, she's a slag
And I've called Marcel "Gaul-bollocks", 'cos he's a fag.
It's a rap.

I'm Gizzard Puke and I don't care.
People say I dye my hair.
I just say "Mind your own business" and then I nut 'em, cos what's it got to do with them anyway?
It's a rap."

Kenney Everett
(Yes, pedants, I do know the picture's of Sid not Gizzard)

chris herrington (chris herrington), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Everybody used to know the rap in Kylie's "Shocked" off my heart. Well, gay people did anyway.

Angus Gordon (angusg), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"We Want Some Pussy", "Me So Horny", "The Fuck Shop"

dave q, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I once saw the Inspecta Deck verse of "Triumph" written on a wall of the science building bathroom at my school. Thus, everyone who visited that bathroom knows the Inspecta Deck verse of "Triumph."

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Push It"

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Best suggestions so far are Rob Base, Sir Mix-A-Lot, MC Hammer, House of Pain, and Vanilla Ice.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Salt & Pepa OWN this thread on the basis of "Push It" and "Shoop" alone.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"Funky Cold Medina"

Nick H, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Or, more recently:

"I was like, 'Good gracious,
Ass is bodacious'."

Nick H, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd bet even geir knows all the words to the fresh prince of belle air theme tune.

puff daddy - missing you
coolio - gangstas paradise

daniel seed, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, if we're talkin' recent stuff, I just heard a 3-year-old singing "In The Club". He even said it like 'cleeuuuuuwwwb".

TS: Knowing all of the words vs knowing all of the words to the chorus

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Still D.R.E."

Lots of people knew the 2 Unlimited verses, although I recently heard that they cut out all the rapping on the US releases (as if their credibility was that high to begin with).

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

don't forget "Rapper's Delight."

hstencil, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean "The Ketchup Song"?

maybe it's a Canadian thing or just that everybody I knew in high school was a total knob, but when I was 15 everybody I knew could recite the Beastie Boys' "Paul Revere".

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there's a big chunk of a generation of Americans who (admit it or not) now the words to *all* of "Licensed To Ill"
Is this a good thing or a bad thing? You be the judge....

Sasha Voynow (svizz), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Message"

"Sound of Da Police"

"In Da Club"

"California Love"

Vincent Vern, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Snow - Informer!

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

A Lickee Boom Boom Now!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: Knowing all of the words vs knowing all of the words to the chorus

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure my mum doesn't know the words to any rap songs. I'd be shocked and faintly embarrassed if she did.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

my mum knows 'get ur freak on'

minna (minna), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely Slick Rick's La-di-da-di? If only through Snoop.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

wham rap!

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

This Looks Like a Job for Me!
So Everybody Just Follow Me!

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont think anyone knows the words to any snow songs beyond the title. of course "baby got back" is the king of this thread. also "come with me" and "deepest bluest" are the most oft recited songs by some friends of mine, for the sheer humour of it.

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude nobody even knows the words in the chorus to "Informer", they just know the "lickee boom boom down"!

Is nobody paying attention to Dan Perry?

Oh, and as for rap songs people know all the words to, I think "Ain't Nuthin' But a G Thang" might be a pretty good contender, at least as far as not-just-knowing-the-chorus-but-ALL-THE-WORDS ones go.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, even moreso than that one...

"so much drama in the LBC it's kinda hard bein' Snoop D O double G..."

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know the words to any of these songs.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Is nobody paying attention to Dan Perry?

I have just died from a funny overdose.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread should've stopped when columns mentioned the theme to fresh prince of belle air really

danny seeeeed, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Walk this Way

David Gates of Delirium, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

all of my friends can sing nate dogg's guest spots (93-98) off the top of their heads.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

how a human being could forget nate dogg's intro to "ain't no fun" is beyond me.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it is a Canadian thing. I was 12-ish when Paul Revere came out and we all became obsessed with knowing all the words...

cybele (cybele), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

My tea's gone cold I'm wondering why I got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window and I can't see at all
And even if I could it'll all be gray, but your picture on my wall
It reminds me, that it's not so bad, it's not so bad

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"Just a Friend" - Biz Markie (?)

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm serious as cancer/when I say rhythm is a dancer"

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Nickalicious, you quoted "Baby Got Back" up to the EXACT point where EVERYBODY forgets the rest of the words.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Children's Story by Slick Rick. Hadn't heard that since I was 7 or 8, but once I saw the vid on "Direct Effect", was warbling like I just heard it yesterday....

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Hellooooo people - I'm sure with a little prompting, you can ALL rap along to Erib B & Rakim... (the Coldcut version, natch)

Thinkin of a master plan
Cuz ain't nuthin but sweat inside my hand
So I dig into my pocket, all my money is spent
So I dig deeper but still comin up with lint
So I start my mission- leave my residence
Thinkin how could I get some dead presidents
I need money, I used to be a stick-up kid
So I think of all the devious things I did
I used to roll up, this is a hold up, ain't nuthin funny
Stop smiling, be still, don't nuthin move but the money
But now I learned to earn cos I'm righteous
I feel great! so maybe I might just
Search for a 9 to 5, if I strive
Then maybe I'll stay alive
So I walk up the street whistlin this
Feelin out of place cos, man, do I miss
A pen and a paper, a stereo, a tape of
Me and Eric B, and a nice big plate of
Fish, which is my favorite dish
But without no money it's still a wish
Cos I don't like to dream about gettin paid
So I dig into the books of the rhymes that I made
To now test to see if I got pull
Hit the studio, cos I'm paid in full...

And on the 'maybe it's a Canadian thing' tip, what about the infamous 'Let Your Backbone Slide' by Maestro Fresh Wes?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and I agree about 'Paul Revere' by the Beasties. I ALMOST did that song at a high school 'air band' show with some friends, but thought better of it...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)
