the new Plastikman lp

It's called Closer and you can listen to it here. It's extremely dark and nasty sounding. Has Mr Hawtin re-invented techno again, or has he been left behind by the new wave of laptop minimalists?

damian_nz (damian_nz), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope so I really liked consumed when i first heard it and have been waiting for the follow up

on a similar note this is coming out soon

drool...

hector (hector), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

or has he been left behind by the new wave of laptop minimalists

i haven't heard the album yet, but judging from recent-ish live/dj sets by the man, no one is leaving him behind.

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm really excited about those rhythm and sound releases, too.

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a lot more interested in Rhythm and Sound these days. Hawtin is just kind of meh.

The one track I did hear was alright, but nothing special. Consumed always struck me as a poor man's take on Berlin dub, and this strikes me Consumed 2003 style. I remember when consumed came out, everybody bought a copy and a lot of people spent a lot of time trying to get their head around it(thinking there was some sort of concealed genius lurking within the depths of that album, if only they could find it...) and a lot of people simply came to the conclusion that there was nothing hidden, that it was all smoke and no substance.

Consumed was the Confield of RH's production career.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I do think he has a really nice haircut.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Consumed was the Confield of RH's production career

ouch!

i think rh needs to be heard and seen live to be truly appreciated. i'm not a huge fan (some people seem to get completely obsessed (mike's concealed genius comment)), but i really admire him. he's left an indelible mark on techno.

i tend to piss off my neighbors with r&s as it sounds good really loud.

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Consumed was the Confield of RH's production career..

Jeez.

I wouldn't go that far, I get the comparison to Berlin dub but Christ it wasn't as bad as Confield. That album just made me curse.

if you are so down on Consumed Mike is it a safe bet that you didnt like any of the tunes released on Minus? Like the Theorem stuff?

hector (hector), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, do you guys find the lyrics/vocals on Disconnect as cringe-worthy as I do?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The best thing that Dale Lawrence ever did was the title track he did with John Williams from his first LP on +8. I did like the Element series when he was still using hardware synths and was not so caught up in loops, but when he starting getting into zip-disk swapping on the Experiements In Syncronicity I kinda tuned out.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

aww i actually liked the first album and the second. although I am a sucker for swayzak and that was the real appeal for me of the tunes on the second album.

hector (hector), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Bear in mind that Lawrence released Nano on Plus 8 before he released Ion on Minus, and then that remix lp.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ahh ok haven't heard nano. just ion and the experiment LP

man its rough getting schooled on my techno!

hector (hector), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked his 'Concept 1 96' series / disc much better than any Plastikman album. By a wide margin. The Brinkmann remixes were nice too.

'Disconnect' is hilarious.

(Jon L), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i really like the theorem vs. swayzak stuff, too, especially "devil in rotations"

is "disconnect" from the new lp?

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(and yeah that t&s song i mentioned is all loops)

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yea but i like it too.

hector (hector), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have heard the whole thing: it's pretty amazing. But bear in mind that I adore Consumed (and the other two...) It just seems a bit more humane than Consumed. And yeah Disconnect is on it.

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it quiet minimal trippy Plastikman or full-on earbleed lunacy Plastikman?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

it's minimal plastikman. missing beats, fx vox, strange textures. very strange but highly amusing at the same time. if you want another 'spastik' yr going to be disappointed. if you want some late night headphone headphuqqerry, you might love it.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 24 September 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought it was pretty rubbish really, and i like earlier plastikman records.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

saying that, the villalobos album is easily my fave electronic lp this year.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 24 September 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

when is the villalobos going to be released?

mohair (jon kapper), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

the villalobos is out now, at least in the uk anyway.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 24 September 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

according to srd/ southern distribution Villabos is now released October 6th in the UK [was due on Sept 22nd] - although some import / promo copies could be floating around certain stores

http://www.southern.com/southern/label/SRD/newreleases.html

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Alcachofa is out NOW in North America - I'm pretty excited about it!

Philippe, Wednesday, 24 September 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that Villalobos record all like 'Easy Lee'?

David. (Cozen), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

if by "easy lee" you mean amazing, then yes. it's probably my favorite electronic album this year, but the matthew dear album is giving it a run for its money...

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

'easy lee' is amazing but the rest lives up to it too. i keep thinking he's singing 'isolee'! i must have snaffled an import copy but luckily i only paid domestic price.

tell me more about matthew dear. i bought a couple of his eps and wasn't overtly impressed. am i missing something?

stirmonster, Wednesday, 24 September 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

well i thought his false lp release was pretty great in a dry hustle kind of way. "beginner's luck" = one of the most versatile records in my "crate". i think it was released as a single as well. his records are deep in a really inventive way, kind of a subversion of what traditional deep house or techno are usually like. i haven't heard the perlon release though. anyway, the dear release is completely different. it's like someone fed old prince records into a laptop, fed the computer some growth hormones and steroids, and made it jack. the beats are really chunky, there are some tracks with vox, everything sounds elastic and rubbery...

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

...and it's sensual as fuck. (much like the villalobos i might add)

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 25 September 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

if the villalobos is available in North America, just where is it?

mohair (jon kapper), Thursday, 25 September 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Artifakts a lot, looking forward to new stuff, hoping he'll come out to Sydney again

mentalist (mentalist), Thursday, 25 September 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Mohair, I picked up alcachofa yesterday from my local record dealer. The major North American distributors have it in stock, so it should be readily available.

Has anyone got the cd copy of this album? I noticed the track listing was a bit different from the lp, and was wondering if I was missing something!

Philippe, Thursday, 25 September 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

... stupid Fopp Byres Road, no Alcahofa...

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 25 September 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

stupid Fopp Byres Road

if they ever get it in, i'll eat my laptop.

it should be record of the month for october in monorail so they'll have it in shortly.

stirmonster, Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

am enjoying the two new Rhythm and Sound records. though they're certainly going for crossover this time... the earlier records used dub sounds, but the rigid, clockwork sequences and clinically added hissy surface noises made for anti-dub, nothing organic about it, those records were overtly all about the engineering. now that they've added vocals, they've taken a huge step closer to the center, this stuff sounds less unique, more closely emulating their influences. but it's very good. and I prefer the vocal disc to the versions, which was a surprise.

(Jon L), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

since we're talking about playhouse ... am i the only one who:

1) has seen fairfax sake everywhere but not the captain comatose or rework albums?

2) thinks fairfax sake indicates a big drop in playhouse's vaunted quality control?

3) thinks captain comatose > ricardo villalobos and
famous when dead 1 >> famous when dead 2?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 26 September 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh I checked the monorail site, figured you might have nominated it for the record of the month, but it's still the John Fahey lp up. thing is i think i saw it somewhere recently too, maybe fopp union st. i'll wait for mono.

David. (Cozen), Friday, 26 September 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

vahid do NOT buy the Rework, it is the surest sign that Playhouse have slipped a little (although the Isolee 12 is so nice). bland lektro, awful stereolab rehashes, what a disappointment.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Friday, 26 September 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely everyone agrees that the first Famous When Dead beats the second?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 26 September 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

this is an incredible record (plastikman that is) you can rreally lose yourself in it. and tim, you're spot-on...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Famous When Dead 1's superiority agreed. I'm not so sure about the Captain Comatose > Villalobos -comparison, though. I've always thought about Ricardo Villalobos more in the context of funky minimalists like Sascha Funke & the Perlon crew, and thus hard to compare to the more electro-fied sound of Comatose (who I haven't heard that much, granted).

Janne (Janne), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I only took a quick listen to Fairfax Sake and wasn't overly impressed, but then I'm not too keen on Tejada in the first place. I think he's got his hand in too many stylistic pies, which waters down his output a bit.

Plus I don't think that the Fairfax release is indicative of any kind of drop-off in Playhouse quality. Check out Losoul vs. International Pony, or Losoul and The Visitors'latest records, all of which are great!

Philippe, Friday, 26 September 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought the losoul vs. international pony and the visitors were pretty wack but playhouse have always been a little hit or miss. they're still one of the few labels i buy on sight though.

stirmonster, Friday, 26 September 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
> a lot of people spent a lot of time trying to get their head around it(thinking there was some sort of concealed genius lurking within the depths of that album, if only they could find it...)

Ah, so it wasn’t just me then. Can’t get my head around Closer either. At times it feels deeply profound, and profoundly disturbing. Then the vocals kick in and I think ‘bad teenage poetry’, that or RH’s taken one tab too many.

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 13 November 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

ten years pass...

http://www.mixmag.net/words/news/richie-hawtin-confirms-that-new-plastikman-album-is-on-the-way

Thought he'd finished with the Plastikman thing after the box set?

StanM, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 18:56 (twelve years ago)

two months pass...

http://www.factmag.com/2014/06/04/richie-hawtin-returns-as-plastikman-for-live-album-ex/
c/p some bits from there:

Fresh material recorded live at the Guggenheim last year.

As hinted last December, techno figurehead Richie Hawtin has announced his first album under his much-adored Plastikman guise since 2003.

Due to be released by Mute on June 10, EX was recorded live at the Guggenheim Museum in New York last year at the invitation of of Belgian fashion designer Raf Simons. Performed around a specially constructed LED obelisk, the gig saw the M_nus boss draw from a selection of new material created for the one-off event.

EX is out digitally on June 10 and on vinyl, CD and limited edition SubPac bundle on July 14. The bundle includes a custom Plastikman edition of the SubPac S1, a portable bass system that conducts subbass directly to your body. According to Hawtin, the machine allows a “deeper appreciation for the music we all love.”

Tracklist:

01 EXposed
02 EXtend
03 EXpand
04 EXtrude
05 EXplore
06 EXpire
07 EXhale
