i tried to see him when he was here a while ago, but when i turned up at midnight the whole thing was already over! so make sure you check the start time. anyway i can't tell you what he is like but i really like 'ghetto tech': see also: dj assault, and most of all: dj funk whose booty house anthems cd is a classic! if you actually don't know what ghetto tech sounds like it's basically techno with bounce basslines and chopped up rap or rnb vocal hooks, concerned primarily w sex.

Godfather is a great producer but also - and unfortunately for us - an over-active and self-indulgent turntablist. He did way too much of that beatjuggling shit when I saw him play. Sounded like an hour-long mixtape intro, with nothing after it. Kinda boring when everyone on the dancefloor is waiting for pounding bass and greasy drumkicks, without those frustrating wannabee-DMC-champion m'as-tu-vu tricks.

But then he may have been told that his sets lacked fun and construction, so perhaps you'll have a good time.

he's pretty fun - i have a couple of mixtapes. what he does is basically bouncy hip-hop-influenced, booty techno that kinda bridges the gap between miami bass and dancemania jack stuff (sometimes fusing exactly those elements, other times it's new records that just sound like that's where they're coming from). as a music style, it's loud, obnoxious and absolutely filthy, so while it might not kick-start a whole new way of life for you, you'll more than likely at least have a laugh

Aye... it's not as mental, tempo-wise, as DJ Assault, but he's in kinda the same ballpark. I'm quite surprised by the wanky turntablism thing... there's little if any of that on the Detroit Ghetto Tech CD I have. Go go. I'm quite jealous actually.

i saw him in chinatown once, he was good, the audience was south london geezers with half formed moustaches, its kinda like bouncy hiphoptechno

Godfather is pretty decent- but definitely goes overboard on the tricks/beat juggling at times. That is a big problem from a lot of ghetto tech and booty house dj's - I think the best dj's of the style in detroit are the ones who work for WJLB- the big detroit hip hop station (friday nights they used to broadcast live from some of the detroit clubs) - Gary Chandler, Kim James, and a couple others. But Godfather & Assault started high-output record labels & started getting all the live gigs because they became well known outside of detroit with the help of their music production.

PS- Strictly speaking for the record - there is a difference between Ghetto House (or Booty House) and Ghetto Tech. The former was pioneered in Chicago by DJ Funk, Dance Mania records and consists primarily of old-school 909 house beats sped up, occasional disco samples, simple synth work, and lots of bass (a key ingredient for any dance music of course). The detroit style - ghetto tech - relies on similar vocals, but underneath is a more electro/breakbeat foundation (lots of kraftwerk samples).

playing in auckland next friday. from the flyer :
"Godfather is one of the original cut-creators of Detroit's GhettoTech scene, a bitches brew of Miami Bass, Electro, Booty House & Jungle played in redlight district strip joints and occassionaly at regular dancehalls alike.
One of Detroit's leading performance DJ's, he pumps a crowd on the floor with his infectious music at the same time blowing their minds with his unparalleled DJ skills.
His incredible technique was recognised by the Red Bull Music Academy as a guest lecturer and performer in 2002, if you don't know you better aks somebody.
With his Databass label, Godfather continues to push it as his classic single "Player Haters in this House" attests, creating ghetto classicz with every release.
Don't miss this chance to see a proper bad-boy DJ lay it down on some worldwide shit as we return to the luxury & opulence on the Pinnacle Club on Friday Oct 3."

hmmmn.

hmm,i think i will probably head in to see him out of curiosity, although people saying he goes overboard on the tricks is a bit offputting, since this completely ruins all of claude young's sets..
with techno, anyway,i much prefer the classic detroit style of mixing fairly seamlessly, but i suppose i have no idea if this would be the same with ghetto tech...

robin (robin), Friday, 26 September 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah- Beat juggling definitely "fits" with ghetto tech, more-so than techno or house because it sort of increases the spastic energy of the style (sorta like jump-up jungle). But it's still dance music, and if it gets too disjointed, it's hard to catch a groove anymore. Where that point from good to bad comes is totally subjective, but you can tell when they've completely lost it :)

pete from the street, Friday, 26 September 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

you sure can
claude young suspended from the ceiling, flicking the crossfader across with his right testicle, while using the left to line up the fifth different mix of "jaguar" in a row

robin (robin), Friday, 26 September 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

LOL-
there should be laws against dj's using their genitalia on the tables/mixers. other people have to use those tables when they're done. gross... don't know how serious you are about Young - but I've heard similar stories of dj's using their dong to stop a record / flip the fader..

pete from the street, Friday, 26 September 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

well its not quite that bad,but literally all he does is play mediocre tracks everyone's heard a million times, never leaving them to play long enough that you can actually dance to them, and does crap tricks...

robin (robin), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

hey me and gareth were at that gig at the clinic. godfathers a bit fast for me. i wanted something a bit slower....its kinda awkward mid-tempo, a bit like d'n'b. not fast enough to be mental, nopt slow enough to have a swing. but theres some nicew bass...

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 2 October 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't go in the end,put off by his appearent claude young-isms,and the fact that i didn't have a huge amount of money and none of my friends were bothered
