Hey, I sampled the "BOOOOMMMMM" kick drum off the MS2000, and I also got plenty of regular "BUNT/BMF/BUMT/DUNCH" kick samples on that muhfuh as well. My question is:

When you put down a hiphop beat with the regular kickdrum sound, and then decide to add that drawn-out BOOOOMMM to it, do you delete the regular kicks where you put the BOOOOMMMs or do you just leave them in?

So far, I've left them in and it sounds decent/as good as a Korg ES-1 can sound.

Rule 1: no rules. Do what works.

_HOWEVER_..... this is what I do, and I have seen others do it too...

The Boooooom! goes underneath the other drums, without deletion. I don't delete the other more toppy kick, but I do make sure that they aren't sharing too much of the eq space; and the attack transients should not be permitted to flam (=near double hit)unless you like that kind of roughness (and many hiphop producers think it's great when some of the production seams are showing, so it's your call on aesthetic grounds). To avoid this, roll off the top end of the deep boom and soften the attack a little. What else? Oh yeah, compress the fuck out of the deep boom so that it doesn't blow out every first beat. Also, I've found that it's hard to get a subby kick at the right level... check it by cranking the volume.

As I said, though, try things out - if you prefer the groove with a deleted upper kick... great! Do that instead.

doubling drums is aok - especially snares. i think you get the best snare sounds by layering 2 or even 3 together

resonance - yay or nay?

Use a high-pass or band pass instead. Less *glitkz*y

if you have other tracks on top of the beat, try setting up an attack
on these tracks.
make it short so you dont notice that there is anything missing,
but it should give the first kick drum an even bigger *thunk*
when you compress the whole track up. once you've got the idea,
you can apply it to other kicks, snares or anything else that
you want to sound superloud.

Raymond,

Buy a Yamaha RS7000 or a Korg Electribe ES-1 or one of those uberexpensive Akai units, and you can make your beats whereever you goddamn well please.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Helltime, Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ZOOM makes cheap drum machines too now, I've seen

Helltime, Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Helltime, Saturday, 22 May 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Geez do they stilk make those things? Mines like 100 years old. Well no, I got it in 1990. But still.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 22 May 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried one of those cheap zoom drum boxen and it was teh sukc.

those korg "electribe" units are very very cheap b/c they've brought out a new and (slightly) improved version. They're a fucking bargain!! they're great little boxes!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 22 May 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Lovely toys - although my stand in keyboardalist got the fright of his life when he had to play one properly, ie. not just making big whooshki sounds. If you're looking to do anything even remotely toned then get a 303 or that Yamaha one.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 22 May 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i use the electribe eA-1 for beats even. too bad i can't find a decent carry-bag for it under a c-note

kephm, Saturday, 22 May 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

after struggling with a computer & cubase and all that sorta rubbish i bought an es1 secondhand and i lovelovelove it. things that took an hour on a computer now take seconds, with plenty of scope for beat mangling (admittedly i'm rubbish w/ computers but still..)

zappi (joni), Saturday, 22 May 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

mpc1000 is relatively cheap compared to other akai boxes but it does have a blue faceplate with red endcheeks. as for me, i am holding out for the Elektron Machinedrum.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 22 May 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got a Boss DR-670. Is that shit? I bought it because it was the only one in the shop and it's six months later and Clydesdale Financial Sairvices are going to take my thumbs because I haven't paid for it.
