Oddest revelation from the Radiohead concert in LA just now...

...since when did the Supergrass guy start sounding like Loz Wossname from freakin' Kingmaker?

And Rhead rox we all r gay. These were the final ten songs in order:

The Gloaming (with very specifically tweaked and fucked up arrangement)
Idioteque
No Surprises
There There
(break)
You and Whose Army?
The National Anthem
Wolf at the Door
Fake Plastic Trees
(break)
Airbag
Everything In Its Right Place

Collectively they (and the rest of the show, but specificially these ten) reaffirmed why I love the damn band, how they indeed have rhythm and how Chuck Eddy is wrong on that point, and reminded me that I went into the show thinking "They've always been great but is it working anymore and is there too much autohype?" and left thinking, "Fuck it, there's not ENOUGH autohype goddammit!"

Best show of the year for me, best time I have ever seen Radiohead live (out of five total over the years). I am sleepy. Good night.

I heard they covered "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)" at all their gigs this year.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 27 September 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No, they did "Dirrty" instead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 September 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

But did they do "I Will"?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 27 September 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Some setlist and review stuff (slightly inaccurate towards the end, refer to my rundown above).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 September 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, i didn't realise you wrote reviews for allmusic.com !! Was a bit surprised to see your name - good review by the way of the chameleons - Strange Times :)

Jimmy Parker, Saturday, 27 September 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all part of my master plan. And thanks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 September 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Creep" ??

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 27 September 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

It was indeed performed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 September 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

As was, sayeth setlist, "Where I End And You Begin"!

(Ned -- not sleepy yet? ;)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 27 September 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

No I did sleep. But now I wouldn't mind some more, maybe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 September 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Hail To The Thief is still poop. :p

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 September 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

miccio poopoos on radiohead's juju non-shokkah

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 27 September 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Disagree on that point as you will, Mr. M., I think I'll listen to it right now. *does so*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 September 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Miccio digs Kid A but ain't an auterist non-shockah!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 September 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, the only thing the live shows have proven is what mediocre albums the last few have been. The songs from Kid A, Amnesiac, and Hail all are infinitely better in concert. I like Radiohead a lot, but the only way I can stomach most of their recent work is live (or via live recordings.) Indeed, they get their groove on live but in the studio it's just painful to listen to--they sound mechanical, contrived, and studied. Radiohead has no heart until they get in front of an audience.

My friend Stripey strongly agrees you on that point and has said for many years that she really prefers all the official and unofficial live stuff she's heard to their studio work -- she does love the band, though prefers The Bends era stuff the best, but it was the live-on-MTV show they did for OK Computer which actually sold her on the group. And they definitely know what they are doing live through and through -- personally I think the full setlist as such was perfectly chosen in my ears and at the end I realized that aside from "Myxomatosis" there was nothing that I really missed.

However, while it may prove that the albums are mediocre to you, I beg to differ. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 September 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Geez, they played "Myxomatosis" at the one I went to (at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin) and along with "The Gloaming," "Everything in its Right Place" and a great version of "Kid A" (a song I'd never liked before), it was the highlight of the night. Yorke's mugging during "You and Whose Army" suggested he learned a few tricks from Bjork.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 27 September 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, good on him! :-) (I'm actually convinced that, as with the Pumpkins, the humor in Radiohead when they perform is often missed or discounted in favor of other stereotypes.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 September 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

They were very charming both times I saw them. I paid for a ticket for this tour but I didn't get to go. It was kind of disappointing, looking back.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 27 September 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"...as with the Pumpkins, the humor in Radiohead..."

ahh ned,i was with you til ya brought the pumpkins into it.next thing you are gonna bring tool in too ;-)

i also caught their stop in vancouver and said that i have found "httt" to be more enjoyable after seeing it done live. i woulda traded you "myxomatosis" for "creep" though. "the gloaming" with the "alistair campbell" fuckery was a highlight here as was the michael stipe vocals on "karma police".

william (william), Saturday, 27 September 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

next thing you are gonna bring tool in too ;-)

Well yeah! ;-)

i woulda traded you "myxomatosis" for "creep" though.

Actually I was pretty bored during "Creep" so that's a fair exchange. Don't get me wrong, at the time it's precisely what first got me into the band, though I ended up liking "Anyone Can Play Guitar" more that year, and for what it is it's incredibly good, self-loathing disaffection gone epic with a beautiful bridge and coda. But every time it or one of the older songs was played -- and this even went up through some of the OK Computer stuff, actually -- I kept making contrasts in my head between what struck me as a monochromatic approach that they had then versus a much broader palette now. [The color metaphor came to mind specifically and possibly intentionally by band design, in that the stage lighting for most of those songs was white light vs. darkness while for more recent tunes they brought out the full spectrum. I have a sneaking hunch this was thoroughly intentional.]

The one exception regarding the older songs would have to be "Fake Plastic Trees," which to me is where they nailed a form so perfectly they never ever had to do it again. (And hopefully they won't.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 September 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(To clarify -- I refer to the studio take of "Fake Plastic Trees." They can never play it enough in concert for me.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 September 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Fun bemusement, from another review on that link I provided above -- this from a guy who works as an usher at the Hollywood Bowl:

the highlight of the night was seeing Justin timberlake getting kicked off one of the promenades.

I'm not surprised he was there or anything, I'm just wondering what he did -- scarfed up too much coke or what?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 September 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite radiohead review.

This is much more interesting and evocative than the actual cover of Hail to the Thief.

Nicolars (Nicole), Sunday, 28 September 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I do love that story. I'm sure I'd be thinking the same thing at that age!
