stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 September 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yep. i think barima said he was going too.

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Or not (see Echoes thread). Unless one of you magics up a spare ticket, I'll have to disappoint you.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 29 September 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

dam, maybe too late but if i'd started this thread and/or known i may have been able to wing another ticket

stevem (blueski), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep I'd like a free ticket too please. It is sold out and then some (and I'm on the dole and thus poor). They're playing earlier at that MTV2 birthday party which isn't sold out, but that's £20 and...well.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

T-O-U-T-Z

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going :-)

Robin Goad (rgoad), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh i didn't know about this MTV thing so worried The Ratpure will now be on at Heaven really late and they'll be knackered/shite and I won't be able to get home properly. should've done my sodding research...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

just rang the venue and they said they han't been informed what time the band are coming on or when it's supposed to finish. bad sign. anyone here going want to take an informed guess as to what time it's likely to start and finish based on past form and based on the fact it's their second gig of the night? i might not be able to mekt it otherwise...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

rapture will be on at 11 according to my man in the know. gig goes on till 1am, guess there'll be a dj after or something.

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

looks like some hot nightbus action for me!

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

(disclaimer: heard the 11 o'clock thing from a friend of someone who knows someone yada yada, please don't quote me if you turn up at 10.45 and find you've missed HOJL!!!)

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i should be getting down there for 10 at the very latest. anyone fancy meeting up? i currently do have a spare ticket again but waiting to hear from person i've offered it to. barima and charlie if you're in the area and one of you still wants it then get in touch just in case.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

their current set time is 11:30.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I am now coming, may try bringing a camera. Lauren, you'll be joining us?

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve, I can very easily make myself in the area, should that ticket still be available! I'm only in Bethnal Green, a mere busride away...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and stevem is my new personal hero!

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

we arrived after ten, at the glasgow one, and were just in time for the awful second support ACT. then a break, then the ratpure at about...I dunno...elevenish. then DJs 'til after two.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

if the boggs are supporting, get there in time to see them - they're fab!

stirmonster, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and stevem is my new personal hero!

And Barima, you are now my nemesis...grrr.

Only messin'.

Or am I?

Aha...etc.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

c'mon then - am seeing them tonite, hype em up, speak in tongues, kick that fucker out the door!

nebbesh (nebbesh), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

ps who are the boggs?

nebbesh (nebbesh), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

they were much better than i expected all round. couldn't hear the sax too well half the time but maybe that's a good thing. very packed gig but sound was excellent, especially the electronic stuff (kickdrums and 303, synths) - very clear and punchy. some goofing around on stage but not too much. after a storming HOJL they covered Gary Glitter as an encore (!) when i was hoping they'd do a Talking heads cover because the security guy on the left side was an astonishing dead ringer for David Byrne circa 1979. well worth seeing anyway.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

really terrific show. the overall energy was better in glasgow and manchester, but then it always is. the mtv2 thing went well, too, but was more bemusing to me than anything else. at least no one screamed "faggots!" at them, which happened when they supported the sex pistols at crystal palace last year.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

great gig, especially the 2nd half of the set, from 'killing' onwards the atmosphere was electric. made it down the front for the end, got there just in time for 'echoes' to explode - pity about the beery lads shoving people around, still, it was a special feeling seeing the looks of utter joy on everyone's faces during HOJL. only complaint = not much movement from the crowd as a whole, this is usual at gigs in london i'm starting to realise.

stevem you're right about the security guy, i couldn't place him, now i realise!

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

did M83 play last night, as well?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yes. didn't think much: they seemed to be making much less noise than they thought they were - a lot of physical intensity but not much interesing in the way of sounds to show for it. lots of big breakdowns even though the songs never built up enough tension to justify them. may just have been the sound quality though, i've heard good things about them before. they're french, right? bonus points for that at least!

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

pete otm about m83. i found them a bit snoozy, despite all of the pseudo-noise histrionics. they looked like they thought they were making a hell of a racket, but for the most part i was underwhelmed. and yes, they're french. they're also the new source/labels thing, which makes perfect sense.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I love music.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete, from where stevem, my Aussie mate Ben and I were standing, had I shook my rump, I might have killed all surrounding punters-it was that stupidly packed.

I loved how they pulled the electronics and more house based songs off-best was when 'Olio' went through a few hundred mutations and Mattie or Gabe played the intro keys to 'Killing' slightly out of time til the rest of the music caught up-excellent stuff! 'I Need Your Love' was a little lost in translation but otherwise it was all good and Mattie's just as good a vocalist as Luke-seemed like an equal split most of the way. Thanks again, Steve.
