it was just a bad dream...

So, last night I had a dream about Ocean Colour Scene. I can't remember what about, but that's probably a good thing. Alternately, a few years ago, I had a dream where Prince let me co-write a song which relaunched his post-symbol career. Does anyone else frequently have dreams/nightmares relating to music?

I had a dream where I was in a hotel bedroom and David Bowie (Thin White Duke period, he was wearing the same clothes on that pic of him on the inner sleeve of Low where he's posing with the guitar) was bringing me breakfast in bed. I jumped out of bed, punched him twice in the face, kicked him in the back and threw him down a flight of stairs. As he was unconscious at the bottom of the stairs, I searched through his pockets and found a tape with a picture of Johnny Ray on the cover. I went out the hotel gates and came across a couple who were kissing and i tried to speak to them but all that came out of my mouth was a sound like I was gagged. Then i followed them around the street until i came to my house and I found that the living room was being used for a Coca-Cola focus group meeting. All very strange....

Can't remember dreaming about any specific bands, but once or twice I've woken up thinking, "Great, I've got that album now!"...and then realizing it won't be released for another few weeks. D'OH!

Any dream about OCS qualifies as nightmare fuel.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is pretty embarassing, but I've been making an ass of myself here all day, so...

I once dreamed that I was alone in a football stadium, and there was a crate of records under every seat. The records were all incredibly strange bootlegs - The Beatles covering an entire Rolling Stones' album is the only one I remember - but it turned into a nightmare because I realized that I wouldn't be able to take them all with me.

For some reason I thought this thread was going to be about Pre- Millenium Tension. The ending of "Bad Dream" would be the most embarrassing thing in the world if it weren't for the phrasing: "And then I woke up 'n shit."

Umm ... I think I've already recounted the dream in which, mid- amorous encounter, I realize that I'm interacting with Mike Patton.

Nitsuh, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Muwhahahaha...Nitsuh fell for my evil ploy.

The Prince song was called "Hymie Rock" and was somehow to the tune of Hava Naglia (apparently the Paisley One had recently converted to Judaism...no I'm not making this up.)

Jess, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Michael I like your dream very much, but I'm gonna be all geeky on you to point out that the inner sleeve of "Low" does not feature a photograph. I do posess an original pressing, and the inner sleeve has credits front and back, in an orangey typeface that sort of matches the look of the outer jacket.

Sean, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's a pic of him somewhere in the album with slicked back hair. He's wearing a jumper and slacks and posing with a guitar.

Michael Bourke, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, at the risk of coming across really argumentative, I must disagree. I can only assume you're referring to the Rykodisc reissue, which were all done with gatefold sleeves, extra photos, etc. The RCA orginal has no photograph other than the front cover, which was a promotional still from "The Man who Fell to Earth". As an added tidbit, the first pressing's back cover was totally blank, save for the RCA logo. The song titles were printed on a sticker on the shrinkwrap. Later pressings printed the titles directly on the back. As a (former?) Bowie obsessive with multiple copies of all of his albums (except the Ryko reissues), I am quite certain of all this info.

Sean, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am referring to the C.D. re-issue. Sorry, shoulda made that clear.

I have such stupid dreams about music, and it makes me fell like a real lame-oid when I do.

Just a couple of days ago I dreamt I was looking at a magazine with many full-page pics of Morrissey. He was posed with little children, mostly little girls in frilly pink dresses. They were hugging him and holding signs that said "We Love Morrissey" and "Moz Is Our Uncle."

I dreamt my old european history teacher was leading 100 girls and boys (me included) in a singing and dancing chorus of Radiohead's "High and Dry" and he yelled because we were not "interpretive" enough.

I dreamt I moved into an old musty house and when I went to explore the tiny attic, Billy Corgan was hiding amongst the rafters. He has green dreadlocks and was siiting with his arms wrapped around his folded-up knees. He handed me a yellow telephone with a wire cage over the touch-tone numbers. Lights flashed when it rang and it dispensed Skittles.

I've had dreams about David Bowie too. We were eating raw eggs together and I told him Nazi's were not cool. I never said they were interesting dreams.

Lindsey B, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had a dream about the Style Council. Odd, as I've never owned any of their albums, or wanted to. Is this revenge for my 'worst influence ever' thread?

dave q, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In the past I've dreamt about Suede playing a song from Coming Up before it came out. It sounded better in the dream.

I've also dreamed about being on the dance floor of the club in the Uni I went to while the 60s Bob Dylan was sat in a corner playing. I was surprised there were so few people there.

The other night I had dinner with Aimee Mann as various of my friends did odd things round about us.

I have also, in the past, dreamt about record shopping, which is a bit sad.

MSmith, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I forgot! I had a dream a couple months ago about going to see a Nina Hagen show, during which she came over and kissed me!

Sean, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did anyone else read through this thread checking you weren't about to post something someone else already had, out of fear of unoriginality?

I had this weird dream the other day about being at a rock festival in Thailand. All I can remember are the Gorillaz, and as far as I can recall their performance consisted solely of 12 year-old cheeky cockney shoe-shine boy Billy Corgan (circa Tonight Tonight video) playing drums. Anyway, this led to me thinking the greatest band name since Blurillaz:

Smurillakinz.

Graham, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've told this story on other musical fori, so excuse me if you've heard it before. There were a few years when, anytime my dreams required a band playing in the background (i.e. nightclub scene, house party, etc.), it was Urge Overkill. I don't know why - I was lukewarm about Urge, although I liked them live. I guess it was because I ran into them several times in real life. In one dream, they were handing out free guitars to everyone in the audience.

Kerry, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I dreamed once that a close friend & I were running around Paris (was living there at the time, I think we were near my neighborhood) and had been given David Bowie's cell phone number by some connection (was not, in fact, having any hip connections at the time), so was debating whether or not to call him. But really, there was nothing to do, so I didn't think it would be very polite to call.

Last night I dreamnt I was making out with that chick from Will & Grace.

one year passes...
Last night I had a dream that I'd just written a feature about Interpol and was hanging out with the band as a photographer took pictures. I was chatting up the guys in the band when I suddenly realized that I knew nothing about them and that I'd never even heard their music except for the three MP3s on my computer. I had no idea how I'd actually written an article about then when I was completely ignorant of who they were and what they did. Panic ensued.

I once dreamt that when I played the Boo Radleys' song "Wilder" it would make tiny objects fly out of my shoes. These included a little orange dragon with blue wings and multicoloured coke bottle caps which flew around and cut my hands. It turned out the song had a spell on it so every time it played strange things would happen. Then I went on a school trip and got lost.

I also dreamt I was listening to an Emmylou Harris song but it sounded exactly like Echobelly. Wot a nightmare!

Several months ago I had a dream that I was trying to kill Eminem. I'm not sure if it was because he posed a threat to my well-being or because he was just an irritant, but eventually it came down to me throwing him under a moving subway train. This was back when I loathed his music instead of being entertained by some of it and repulsed by others (like the pity-party stuff on TEH ENIMEM SHOE).

six months pass...
here's a music dream for you. i'm at the glastonbury festival, but its taking place AT SEA. all the crowd are paddling in the water, with a big stage above them. then 50 cent comes on to do a set, and makes some unwise comments about the holocaust, so the crowd turns on him. i decide to egg the crowd on further, so i get up on this ridge, above the crowd, but not on the stage, and encourage them to give him more abuse. i then notice 50 cent coming angrily towards me, and I'm thinking "shit, this is 50 cent! He might kill me here and now!" He's snarling angrily at me and charging towards me, kicking at my shins, so i jump back down into the crowd.

at the end of the gig, i'm thinking, "i better hang at the back of the crowd, in case 50 cent comes down afterwards to attack me again" so i do. then i wake up.

opinions?

I had a dream last night that Bono was dead and no one on ILM could talk about anything else all day. Someone else was dead too, but I can't remember who it was. I think I had this dream because Jennifer Aniston was wearing an MC5 t-shirt on Friends.

I had a dream that Deadsy made a movie called "Lost horizon". I was really excited to see it, but it was a big disappointment – the film just detailed how to make Boeing jets. But the boys of Deadsy were in it, only minor roles.

Oddly, this was the big link in my discovery of the great band Lost horizon.

My fav is still the one where I pick up the new Limp Bizkit album and it sez "with guest appearences by Nick Drake and Richard Thompson".

Most recently, I dreamt that "In Da Club" and the one with the handclaps were, like, two different songs. Whoa, man.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 4 April 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i only ever really dream about four things: shaving, killing, humping, and celebrities.

about a year ago i made out with and frigged mariah carey on two different occasions.

more recently, missy elliott and i were lounging on the beach. we said a little RIP for aaliyah and agreed it was criminal that a school bus full of ugly-beautiful people we saw cruising along the water didn't sink.

in another, jon secada, who was my boss in the dream, sang 'happy birthday' very sensually to me at work. it wasn't really my birthday, we just didn't want him to know everyone was throwing me a take-this-job-and-shove-it party on my last day. just like real life.

for the record, my conscious mind has no real clue what jon secada even sounds like. and i much preferred frigging mariah carey. honest.

honorable mentions: i dreamt there was a new (hott) xtina video that was making headlines, and snoop dogg made a cameo in another dream, but i can't remember what we were up to. bangin' and slangin' no doubt.
