velvet underground

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 29 September 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Pink Floyd

duder, Monday, 29 September 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.cheebadesign.com/dengamleskolen/kraftwerk.jpg
Yeah, I said it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Every Romo band?

adaml (adaml), Monday, 29 September 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.in.gr/musiccd/ixos/images/kraftwerk.jpg
we found synthesizers first. no band will be able to use one without being described as "influenced by kraftwerk." this is law. beedy beedy beedy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

are you saying kraftwerk are shit?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 September 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

no, I'm nominating them for Governor of California. WHAT THREAD IS THIS?!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

you are fucking stupid then.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 29 September 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, by putting them here I'm admitting that they're, yawn, important.

(full disclosure: though I've owned later albums I've yet to hear the legendary "Autobahn," which was a pop hit so I assume it's actually good)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't agree with you at all, Anthony, but I've got to admire your bottle! Drive it further, mate, drive it further!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 29 September 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

post-Autobahn, what did Kraftwerk do that the Human League didn't do better? Hell, I'll be impressed if the guitars on "Autobahn" sound as as good as the ones on "The Lebanon"!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

um, computerworld.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 29 September 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Miccio, you are the realest

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 29 September 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

can I also note that they look like dorks (which doesn't really matter) and that their vocalist is horrible (which really does)? and that I don't give a rat's ass if this is intentional? I don't even have to put up with the European endlessness of "Trans-Europe Express" thanks to "Planet Rock." Like most computers from the 70s, these guys are outdated and nonfunctional. Phil Oakey, God bless 'em, proved that a robot in human drag is WAY cooler. And I don't care if that makes me a humanist or whatever.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

duder i hate pink floyd to,but who did they influence that is any good?

robin (robin), Monday, 29 September 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Radio Activity is a concept album about radios because they give the beeps names like "antenna" and say the word radio a lot.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(actually "antenna" is my favorite track but the point remains the same)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

His website is called Anthony is Right, and he thinks Kraftwerk are crap. I have a new hero.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 29 September 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony, you worship Fred fuckin' Durst for cryin' out loud.

And adaml, YOU MUST DIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Monday, 29 September 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and a VERY influential shit band...probably the most important shit band: THE SEX PISTOLS, without an f'in doubt.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Monday, 29 September 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

In the spirit of this thread, I'd like to add The ROlling Stones. Hopeless.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, and uncontroversially I think, New Order and Depeche Mode, the two most overrated bands of the 80's. Anyone, anyone at all could do better than these no-nothing nursery rhyme hamsters.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, why are you getting so worked up over Kraftwerk being mentioned when the post you should be getting worked up over is the one at the top by keith.

My answer to the question is: John Cage

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

And adaml, YOU MUST DIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

I should say inspired by THE ARGUMENTS on The Clash thread. I personally love The Clash. So I expect you to resurrect me.

adaml (adaml), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, get worked up about mine already!!!

Walter Carlos - Switched-On Bach. Cheesy in the extreme - I suppose you had to be there at the time.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

you know, mr. miccio, i think that you must be satan's spawn because you spit on just about everything that i love. first, you bash EATB. then, you bash scarface. now in this thread, you bash kraftwerk. you incubus!

oh yeah, the answer to this thread is so obviously the Doors -- without them, no EATB (HAW HAW ANTHONY!), no Joy Division, no Iggy and the Stooges, and no Teardrop Explodes.

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

and uncontroversially I think

Oh, you'd be wrong. But Dan can say more. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Alice in Chains

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Four Freshmen - inspired The Beach Boys.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

the beatles. they weren't shit songwriters, just dull performers

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Agree with the Doors, Sex Pistols & Pink Floyd. & add- the Beatles. I can't stand them in the slightest. La, la, la, boring trite shitty sing-song music, crossed with the worst of artsy asshole pretensions. Funny enough, for my favorite band, the Chameleons, the Beatles were the greatest influence, Pink Floyd a common comparison, & Sex Pistols also indirectly important for inspiring so much punk music. I disagree with the Stones though, love them.

sucka (sucka), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, now I'm not the first to bring them up, thanks

sucka (sucka), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

another one i forgot ... THE WHO!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

New York Dolls

mentalist (mentalist), Monday, 29 September 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Autechre have inspired some good artists, I think. So has probably Aphex Twin.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 29 September 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Sex Pistols

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 29 September 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Bill Haley and the Comets.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 29 September 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir you are thinking of Oasis, right? Because if that's the case you are OTM yet again. (This is the highest batting-average increase since that Disney film where the guy takes supervitamin pills and starts hitting them over the fence every time out)

dave q, Monday, 29 September 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

London Posse, Chicory Tip

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come on Dom Chicory Tip were terrific.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I only know Son Of My Father mind you - a mate has the album though and he says it's all good.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It is.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 29 September 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir you are thinking of Oasis, right?

I am thinking of Oasis. But I am also thinking of Elvis Costello, Squeeze, Graham Parker, The Jam, The Police, Boomtown Rats, The Clash, Wire, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, Stone Roses, Charlatans, Blur, Supergrass, Pulp and tons of other great bands that have built their music more or less on those lousy unmusical noises that Sex Pistols used to make.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 29 September 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of those have their roots in the 60's, Geir. You know, Byrds, Love, Doors, The Who, Kinks etc etc.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually there may be a case to be made here, the Pistols unfortunately ensured that every English band from then on had to be a thematics-over-music cartoon conceptual contrivance (even Bowie respected music-qua-music sometimes), whereas Oasis were probably the last English rock band. Not to underrate UK stuff in other areas, just saying that as that particular illustrious seam goes, they found the end of it

dave q, Monday, 29 September 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to have to second Kraftwerk.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 29 September 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

duder i hate pink floyd to,but who did they influence that is any good?

Air, Beck, Ween, Radiohead, to name a few

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony Miccio, shut the fuck up.

wangsta, Monday, 29 September 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i can do it. a little love of life, a little white light from the mouth of infinity, a little soundtracks for the blind, a little world of skin, a blind faith and a stooges cover and voila! a new swans fan. plus, he really does love so much stuff that is similar. um, sorry chuck, i realize that i'm talking like you can't read this.

speaking of not reading this though, don't tell frank and don that i made you tapes cuz i promised them baltimore house music tapes like 3 years ago and i still haven't sent them. that's next on my list though. this seems more important somehow.

scott seward, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, sorry anthony. carry on.

scott seward, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

did the smashing pumpkins ever inspire anybody good?

apologies to ned in advance.

scott seward, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

My Chicory Tip reasoning was that they were the first ever band to have a mainstream smash featuring a synth, and thus they influenced all the great synth bands through history, like Harold Faltemeyer.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

apologies to ned in advance.

Man. (But good job on getting Chuck to listen to the later purtier Swans stuff, as well he ought.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, sorry ned. it's just that voice. i can't get around it or under it or over it. i just can't.

that and the fact that the guitars actually just help in reminding me of that voice. it's like the guitars AND the voice are needling me and making me itchy.

scott seward, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no worries, more than a few people have said the exact same thing to me about 'em! I don't know, to me the voice always seemed perfectly appropriate. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Especially when he does that descending "ahhhh" that sounds like he's slipping into a jacuzzi.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Concur that the new Desert Sessions with PJ is surprisingly smelly.

Dock Miles (Dock Miles), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I should say inspired by THE ARGUMENTS on The Clash thread. I personally love The Clash. So I expect you to resurrect me.

-- adaml (formerlynordicskill...), September 29th, 2003.

Heh heh. Did I mention I love ya, man? ;)

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

oops. i misread this thread. Ignore My Alice In Chains post. gah!

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The Raspberries

not terrible, but most of the bands they influenced are better than them

I'll also second the nod for Silver Apples- they're awful, but pretty important

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah - Chicory Tip = very early Moroder production, the whole album is done by him. And even if they didn't influence the later Moroder stuff the whole glam-thump-plus-synths thing is a Human League template so you can blame Chicory Tip for most of the post-League synthpop (oh and electroclash too).

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Swans were great, but I can see how Chuck might not dig them. I quite like them, but they don't fall into the category of bands whom I'm willing to get in all sorts of purple-faced melees about.

Nick Drake's melodies not beautiful enough for you, Chuck? Hmmmm. Well, maybe you have higher standards than I, as I think he had quite the knack for melody. But then again, we can't all be Kix, can we (sorry, cheap, predictable shot there).

My ultimate answer to this thread: PATTI SMITH.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

>oh my god, it isn't really called jarbosis is it?!! <

no, i just made that up! what the heck, maybe i'll just send you the advance CD anyway. you'll probably listen to it more than me, scott...

so, anyhoo, what raspberries-influenced bands are better than the raspberries????? the KNACK, maybe? (The Records??) (oh wait, I suppose Cheap Trick or Boston or Poison might be a good answer, so maybe I just changed my mind about this...) I mean, powerpop is a DISEASE, for the most part, or at least it's been one since 1980. Seems to me the Raspberries were one of the few ever to get it RIGHT (which is to say, for instance, to actually get some power in with the pop!) (Tho maybe you mean they influenced NON-powerpop stuff...)

Kix had prettier melodies than Nick Drake, Alex. No fucking contest. And so did Richard Thompson and Glen Campbell and Gordon Lightfoot.

chuck, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

By the way now I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanna hear more Chicory Tip (even if they totally ripped off Hot Butter. Ok, maybe they didn't.)

chuck, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was about to say, all this Chicory Tip talk intrigues. Is any of it easy to find or is it off to the filesharing races? Oddest use of "Son of My Father" = sort-of theme music for this ridiculous Europorn I have a chopped-up copy of via Showtime called Ready, Willing and Able, from something like 1973. Then there was Jigsaw's "Sky High" in The Man From Hong Kong...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, the version of "Son of My Father" that I have (I think on the Giorgio LP of I believe that name -- the one where he has two dangerous looking dogs on the cover; don't have it right here handy to check it - and definitely on Rhino's *Super Hits of the '70s*) is credited to Giorgio himself, not Chicory Tip. Which one came first??

chuck, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Rhino's *Super Hits of the '70s*

Probably my favorite comp series ever. Hmmm...new thread time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.superseventies.com/spsuperhits.html

(my rolling stone review)

chuck, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.alpha-musik.de/2444248.html

chuck or anybody else, definitely buy this german glam comp if you ever see it anywhere. it's not as obvious as most and has some real jems on it. chickory tip AND chris spedding's "Motorbikin'"! i bought mine years ago and i still play it all the time.

scott seward, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"the Pistols unfortunately ensured that every English band from then on had to be a thematics-over-music cartoon conceptual contrivance"

If so, it's because every English band from then on got it wrong. The Sex Pistols were the greatest of all punk bands precisely because they backed up the concept with great music. The "concept" in truth grew out of the fact that the music was so jaw-dropping.

Burr (Burr), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The fucking Sugarhill Gang.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Michaelangelo, you are so wrong about them. But I won't start.

chuck, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Chuck, what's my favorite kind of music in the world that isn't early breakbeat hardcore? Old-old-old-school hip-hop. And I don't like the fucking Sugarhill Gang. So there. >:-p

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Not even "Apache"????????? Jeez, Louise! Oh well, never mind.

I just thought of Jane's Addiction, Bratmobile, Danzig, Tupac, and Nine Inch Nails, if nobody's mentioned them yet. I'm not gonna check.

chuck, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Though it's possible I meant Babes in Toyland instead of Bratmobile. You decide. Really, I should say Bikini Kill just to get even with Michaelangelo, but I won't, because I'm such a nice guy today.

chuck, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Babes in Toyland predate Bikini Kill anyway, so say them. I'm no fan. And upon further reflection, maybe I just mean "Rapper's Delight," which has one great verse (Wonder Mike's bad dinner) and a whole lotta lousy-rhythmed whatever.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Man, I just have to put my vote in for Kraftwerk as governors of California, HILARIOUS!! Well I think it might be easier to think of good bands who inspired legions of crap bands. Take Led Zeppelin for instance.....

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Saturday, 28 January 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

Anthony...tsk tsk tsk

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 28 January 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sorry, but that sarcasm of Anthony's made me laugh out loud!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Saturday, 28 January 2006 23:53 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha yes it was

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:17 (nineteen years ago)

funny, i mean.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:17 (nineteen years ago)

Although I do'nt know if I'd go so far as to call the Velvet Underground a crappy band, it just seems kinda odd the HUGE influence they've had.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:21 (nineteen years ago)

Chuck is otm about a lot of stuff on this thred like Nick Drake and the Raspberries.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:30 (nineteen years ago)

And Slayer and early Swans. Not about Frank Zappa, though.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:37 (nineteen years ago)

Slayer rules, man.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:47 (nineteen years ago)

Did the Shaggs inspire any great bands? Or just a bunch more shit bands like the Shaggs?

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

(Should say Chuck was otm in his *defense* of the Raspberries, as opposed to the others whom he was critiquing.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

Oasis were probably the last English rock band

haven't read the nme in so long

marc h. (marc h.), Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

That's funny, I'm listening to Swans as we speak(type).....

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

Led Zeppelin
Beach Boys
Can
Sonic Youth
Nirvana
Yes
Jeff Buckley
My Bloody Valentine
The Cure
Sly and the Family Stone
Public Enemy
Television
Killing Joke
Whoever influenced Pavement

I go on and really start eviscerating sacred cows with my special enchanted Masamune blade that I keep handy for such purposes, but I'll be nice for now.

Cliftonb, Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

That's classic, Clifton: saying all those bands are shit and then throwing in some props for Pavement.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

You don't "eviscerate" a sacred cow bigger than the Beatles, which I think has been done!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Sunday, 29 January 2006 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

SWEET JESUS NO!!!!!

Whoever is responsible for such a monstrosity must surely themselves be from the 9th Circle of Hell.

It was an attempt at humor that crashed and burned. I have FAILED

*begins Harakiri

Cliftonb, Sunday, 29 January 2006 01:07 (nineteen years ago)

.......you lost me.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Sunday, 29 January 2006 01:09 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry that was for Tim Ellison, who thought I was giving props to Pavement.

By the way how does that xpost thing work I'm sorta new 'round these here parts.

Cliftonb, Sunday, 29 January 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

So you DO'NT like Pavement, I see..... well I'm kinda new here too, maybe if you're a little more specific...

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Sunday, 29 January 2006 01:19 (nineteen years ago)

Sex Pistols and Velvet Underground are perfectly OTM. Now close thread.
