Why the fuck are there Strokes covers in there?

I wouldn't like the responsibilty of covering 'Final Day', 'Winter' or 'Part-Time Punks'... Well, maybe Part-Time Punks.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

galaxie 500 did a lovely version of 'final day'..

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

this reminds me of an old thread of mine

TS: classic Rough Trade vs the revitalised Rough Trade

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

nobody tackled the smiths i see

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

indeed one needs to question the inclusion of *two* strokes covers

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Why aren't they ON it, rather than being covered on it? (are they still on RT?)

That Oneida / Blood Ulmer cover sounds promising.

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

at last i am free - originally by chic

phil turnbull (philT), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

was robert wyatt covering a chic tune?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 September 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

he was, though the original was better. and the Strokes' first EP was on RT

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 29 September 2003 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

everything the strokes have done was on RT in the UK

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 September 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Couldn't we just stick with the originals?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 29 September 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The Strokes are on Rough Trade and they're probably one of the biggest-selling bands on RT, at least currently.

Nick H, Monday, 29 September 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't say i'm going to be running to the record store to buy this comp anytime soon...it looks like it suXoRs. the last rough trade comp i liked was the 'electronic 01' one

geeta (geeta), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The Belle & Sebastian version of "Final Day" is _very_ good and pleasingly non-faithful (they do it as electro-disco, basically).

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

That reminds me I just witnessed the best cover of Styx evah! By a band called The Buttless Chaps. Sundar would have been proud.
This has nothing to do with Rough Trade unless various members of Royal City were in the room. That is the Three Gut Records band right??

02 ADAM GREEN Eating Noddemix
Originally by Young Marble Giants

Trust this no-talent to pick the worst thing YMG ever did

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a fantastic comp. The full album title is, quite cleverly I think, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, so there's your nod to The Smiths.

And more to the point, it's only gonna cost you a paltry fiver in the UK! Bring it on.

fwiw my personal favourites are the Liz Fraser and Hidden Cameras tracks; and the cover of "Part Time Punks" is pretty faithful, so don't panic...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the oneida cover is astounding, but should be longer, in a LIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHTLIGHT kinda way. the detroit cobras' take on 'last nite' is fun, too...

The Belle & Sebastian version of "Final Day" is _very_ good and pleasingly non-faithful (they do it as electro-disco, basically).

haha this cover version is the crappiest piece of shit i've heard in months!

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i was impressed by most of the versions, especially British Sea Power and Adam Green. The Tyde's G500 version was just dull. Fiery Furnaces are wasting everyone's time.

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was OK, nothing too embarrassing...but "Rebuilding The Bridge" (Typical Girls mailing list CD-R that Douglas compiled) was much more experimental and much stronger.

I'd still rather listen to the originals than either of these.

Royal City's cover of Is This It? has been floating around for some time. It's brilliant. Though hearing it sung without a bunch of fuzz over the vocals made me realize just how bland the lyrics are.

There's some awful shit on this, but Liz Fraser is wonderful, and the Mystic Chords Of Memory's 'We Could Send Letters' just came on my iPod and it suddenly sounded great.

Oh dear God.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 24 October 2004 13:27 (twenty years ago)

after having had this for a while the only song i out-and-out hate is the belle and sebastian one.
