ILX Radio

There are many ilxors who host or have hosted radio programmes. What do you think about the idea of an online ILX Radio station?

I was thinking that - should there be enough interest - we could collectively put together about a dozen or so broadcasts each week. They'd be broadcasted live, of course, as well as archived for later listening. As a group we have pretty broad tastes, and we're generally on the cutting edge of new things. I think this would be a really great opportunity to share your particular area of interest with the rest of ILX, as well as learn something about other people's.

As a DJ you'd need (at a bare minimum) a copy of Winamp with the Shoutcast plugin (PC Only. I'm sure there are alternatives for the Mac but I'd need to research them), the music you want to play (preferably ripped to mp3 format), a microphone (should you wish to announce or make commentary about your tracks), a broadband internet connection, and a couple of hours to spare each week.

Of course, if you have a pair of decks and know how to hook them up to your PC you could mix some shit up. (I'd really like to see this, actually)

I'd be up for organising the technical aspect. Ie providing web pages, bandwidth for broadcasting, etc. I'd also be interested in doing a programme myself should anyone be interested in what I have to play.

If you're at all piqued by this idea, either as a listener or a DJ, please respond so I can guage interest.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes as a listener. Yes as a DJ too, but I don't have a mic so that might have to work.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

As a listener I can't imagine I'd listen to anything else. I have far too similar tastes to other more knowledgable and articulate people on ILX to consider DJing. Also, technical skills are zero.

Nick H, Monday, 29 September 2003 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

dam, if i hadn't just got a job i'd be perfect for the graveyard shift.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 29 September 2003 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

There'll be no 'graveyard shift', I don't imagine. I don't think we'll have enough programming to broadcast 24/7. I thought we could have live broadcasts twice a day, and an online archive of streamable/downloadable past shows.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 29 September 2003 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a yes as a listener and DJ.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

yes as a listener, absolutely.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

As a listener, definitely. I have broadband now, but I somehow doubt that the ILX contigent would want to hear me playing the music I want to for two hours.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

as a listener, yes i think it sounds great

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely - i've done quite a bit of radio, this would be great fun to do

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Wonderful idea. I'd like to do both, though I imagine technical guffness will stop me DJing. Me and Dom as a tag-team radio duo would be awesome...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.cabelasiditarod.com/images/runyan_ellering_doom.jpg

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That's Todd at the front, obviously.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes as a listener. Sounds like a fantastic idea.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 29 September 2003 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

If I had a computer or the time for it I'd be interested, but alas I do not.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell yeah, and I'd love to DJ. Who says there won't be a graveyard shift, either? That's my time, baby! DJ Io in das haus!

Is it possible to get said plugin for free?

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I'm totally up for DJing (note I may back out once reality reasserts itself).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yes as a listener.

re: As a DJ you'd need (at a bare minimum) a copy of Winamp with the Shoutcast plugin

This is an indicative example of how the technology can be used:

Progressive Soundscapes Radio
http://www.progressivesoundscapes.com/

and an example of the shoutcast interface
http://peace.str3am.com:6140/played.html

using winamp/shoutcast you can have regular live slots, and program in an auto pilot schedule for the rest.

Also Brainwashed Radio, use winamp/shoutcast
http://www.brainwashed.com/radio/

There would not be a graveyard shift per se, remember ILM folk come from many different countries/ time zones.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

shoutcast download instructions

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

What Mac software is there for this? Me being unemployed at the moment, I would jump at this...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

OS X, Linux & BSD tools

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I could be convinced to take part in this! Just think of all the Cancon!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the idea of DJing - but the difficulties involved in being on a shared computer means 'live' broadcasts might be problematic for me. Are pre-recorded mixes permissable?

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus I have a horrid speaking voice that I don't believe anyone would want to listen to.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

So how long would it take for this to become a reality? Can we start signing up for time slots now?

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

as a listener yeah

Vic (Vic), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd also gladly be a(n enthusiastic) listener,
for a change :)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I do this for a living, so if anyone wants some advice... ;-)

JoB (JoB), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

So how long would it take for this to become a reality? Can we start signing up for time slots now?

We can get this going pretty quickly. What times suit people best? We need to put together some sort of schedule with regular broadcast times (maybe 3 slots per day, to suit Europe, the USA, and Australia?) and then we can fill them up. Could some Europeans and Americans please post what time they'd be most likely to listen to this, and also the times at which people will be able to DJ?

I've set up a technology test. Click here to listen to me spin some random tunes whilst at work. Stats.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

for admin scheduling purposes, it would be a good idea to choose one standard time zone and link to this for reference:

The World Clock - Time Zones
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

GMT is probably best, since pretty much everyone should know what their timezone is in relation to it.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Brilliant idea. I would love to DJ, if I can figure out that Mac stuff.

adaml (adaml), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

as per listening time, i'd be at the 'puter (ergo listening as well) usually round 15-17 GMT and circa 21 and onwards, GMT :)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're running OS X you can use the tools provided on this page:

http://www.shoutcast.com/download/broadcast.phtml

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

All right...I'd like to do either 14-16 GMT (that's 8-10 PM US central time) on Sunday nights or 15-16 GMT on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Just one hour per week would be okay, too, although if those tools Kot and DeRogatis can manage two hours, I don't see why I couldn't.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally up for this

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone have webspace or whatever to host this/archive shows/whatever? (preferably outside the us cuz of the riaa striking at webradio)

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd be happy to dj. i can't mix live to shoutcast until i spend some cash on my computer (ie. new soundcard and new mixer).

disco stu (disco stu), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'd be hosting everything here on the ILX server which is located in Melbourne, Australia.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

wilx vs. kilx vs. ilxfm

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

bump

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ummm, I think we're the only ones here, Blount. Get some sleep.

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm also up for this... have done tons of college radio, and can probably be of some tech help since I ran internet radio stations for a few years.

We could also use this platform: http://www.icecast.org
Free streaming MP3! It's worked really well on a site/radio stream some friends and I muck around with: http://www.globalpopconspiracy.com/radio/

I can't believe this idea hasn't come up earlier...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I couldn't really believe it either. Not that I did a search or anything...

I looked at Icecast, and it looks great. OGG is my audio format of preference - I decided to try out Shoutcast because mp3 is a fairly ubiquitous format. I'll look at icecast again.

I'm hoping that in the next couple of days I'll be able to put together some sort of application-submission process, whereby people can select timeslots and view the timeslots selected by others.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

*excited*

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

this is a great idea.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Julio should def. do a show.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I like this idea as a listener obv.

don't have the equipment to do this even if i actually wanted to do it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Utterly drool, as a listener.

Would one-off DJ stints be an option, in addition to the more regular slots? In that case, probably a lot of people (incl me) would find it fun to have a go.

OleM (OleM), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You have two options: you can either record and encode your records as MP3's, or you can just play records live whilst broadcasting. Both approaches require a soundcard with a Line-In port (most do) and an appropriate connector between that port and your amplifier or phono pre-amp. (you can use the "Tape Out" ports on the back of most Amps)

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

can i do something

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Chaki you should upload a live set, and all will bow to you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

consider it done

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

*merry*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and then you need some sort of basic wave editor, like Cool Edit or AudioEdit. You can then record in your records as a big .wav file, and (I think) "Save As..." in mp3 format.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

and I'm not sure if people really want to hear me rape the English language on air

Oh yes we do!

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, bring on the hot live vinyl/8-track action, then.

I know that all y'all can't wait to hear the Spanish easy listening version of "Louie Louie."

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd def be up for it as a listener but I'm another one who does it as a living so I dunno if I could bring myself to add another couple of DJ hours to my day. But maybe!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd totally do both

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I currently do a little of this kind of stuff (http://www.dirtyradio.net) and would love to have a spot on radio ilx. I do a live techno/electro/microhouse mix show every week. I can also do a 'golden era' hip-hop show, and a hipster lounge/swinger/crap show. We (dirtyradio) also have a 24/7 stream of mp3's when nobody is doing a live show, which would be cool for radio ilx (or whatever it'll be called) to have. The way we do it is have one computer with all the mp3's on it streaming to the server on shuffle, and set to auto reconnect if the connection is lost. When it's time for the live dj shows, the broadcasters kick the mp3 stream off (using the handy html server admin page that shoutcast sets up), connect their own stream, and do their thing for a few hours. When they finish and disconnect, the mp3 stream automatically reconnects. Anyway, I would love to have a spot.

tylero, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my! How fun. I used to have a radio show--for a number of years. I'd be happy to relive some of that...

cybele (cybele), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

can we have people enacting some of the jay-z vs nas threads as short interludes between music ?

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

with helium-enhanced voices

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

and cartoon sound effects.

adaml (adaml), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Trife should totally do the breakfast show.

adaml (adaml), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a guaranteed listener and would love to help out/DJ/whatever.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The Church Of Me on Sunday mornings, obviously.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely need to get in on this, though I need equipment...let me know if/how things progress. am in the midst of converting near all my CDs to MP3 anyway so that would be a snap.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Trife should totally do the breakfast show.

Or definitely some kind of show.

Nicolars (Nicole), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to do a folk show.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to listen. I'd like to do a show, too, or a couple one-offs. Take me back to the college radio days.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

would people listen to a folk/nu-folk show?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

As Tyler mentioned, we've had a setup like this running for a few years now.

http://www.dirty.org/dirtyradio/ (new functionality, but not final design)

In addition to the streaming, there's also a very easy web interface for DJs to post their setlists, classic records, current reviews, etc.

We'd be willing to provide this service to the ILX crew here, if its needed.

Scott Warner (thream), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i would be keen to dj occasionally (if possible from nz), but i'm keener to listen.

however, duane zarakov is a very good dj (and i wish i could get him to help with the college radio i'm (still) involved with more).

george gosset (gegoss), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

p.s. you can catch my dirtyradio show tonight:

tylero, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew, a wonderful idea! Bout time ILX had its own station for our inner musos to show off. Wouldn't mind helping out, either. Chalk me up as another potential DJ.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

we should also do a monthly 2 hour show that compiles music specifically made by ilxers, our own version of a local show.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow .. dang, Adam - thanks for the big ups! Sure, I'd like to be involved. I even have two decks. No mic though. Also, I gotta test out my sound card and see if it is up to snuff (which I've been meaning to do for a while; I've got a bunch of vinyl I want to digitize for people)...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 2 October 2003 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't be a DJ because I'm on dialup, but I will listen in as much as possible.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Thursday, 2 October 2003 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What happened here? I'm constantly looking on the Winamp "Internet Radio" page for something good to listen to -- in part because of ILM I get bored with sticking to one genre too long. I want my ILX radio!

Yeah this is strange

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 6 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree. Great ideas the whole thread. Then no action...

Jole, Friday, 6 February 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet that there's a secret ilx radio station that only the cool kids get to listen to :(

Yes, except last.fm is limited by what the lasties have in their library to play. They can only come up with a pretty wan copy of what Radio ILX would sound like.

Basement Jaxx- Red Alert

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

I love this idea so much! If a radio show isn't feasible, how about everyone interested in DJing putting up their DJ sets for downloading...no, I won't use the P-word. I really hope this idea doesn't die!

musically (musically), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh man. I started reading this thread and got really excited, and then I realized it was from 2003.

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Me too.

I like the idea of a college radio-type set up, like Marcello's suggestion above : 'Church of Me' on Sundays AM, etc. People get blocks of time to do their shows.

So if someone is an expert on, say, folk music, they could do a two-hour set of that. It's easier to comprehend than just listening to people's 'DJ sets'.

patrick bateman (mickeygraft), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

People must've burned out on this idea before it even lifted off. Shame.
