For anyone whose interested I think its very good indeed, if not the match of Gentlemen, Black Love or 1969 it comes very close, and I reckon its got at least 2 or 3 of the best tunes that Dulli's ever written.
Its a lot closer in sound to the Afghan Whigs stuff than the 1st Twilight Singers, and I suppose in that respect its a step back rather than a step forward for him.
One thing - It does have a tune off (I think) Black Love which has been re-recorded, I can't remember the name, but there doesn't seem to be any point in redoing it as it sounds almost exactly the same as the original.

"tinny production" + Afghan Whigs? Were you listening to 20th generation dubs on beat up cassette tapes? The major label albums, at least, have a really warm low end.
Anyway, new Twilight Singers album just leaked. Haven't listened yet.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:23 (fourteen years ago)
FYI, if you preorder it on subpop.com you get to hear a stream of the album. The leak is someone's recording of that stream.
― StanM, Saturday, 22 January 2011 05:59 (fourteen years ago)
Can't wait to hear this, I think I"m the only person alive who likes Twilight Singers more than the Afghan Whigs.
― thirdalternative, Saturday, 22 January 2011 15:38 (fourteen years ago)
i wouldn't go that far, but my fav. album by either band is probably Blackberry Belle
― ilxor, Saturday, 22 January 2011 15:44 (fourteen years ago)
I just hope it's more crooning r&b then him trying to rock out.
― bnw, Saturday, 22 January 2011 16:26 (fourteen years ago)
I only hope there's nothing on there about vampires.
― StanM, Saturday, 22 January 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

the artwork.
― Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 January 2011 23:14 (fourteen years ago)
it's sort of paced like blackberry belle, by which i mean: excellently. i think a lot of effort was put into the sound of this thing, which, dulli knows how to carry a mood, definitely, but sonically this record is a terrifying dark current. don't really know what i'm trying to say. still in awe.
― Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 January 2011 23:17 (fourteen years ago)
yesssssss i am so pumped for this!!!

― thirdalternative, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 00:59 (fourteen years ago)
Blackberry Belle is the best thing in the world to me today, such a wonderful shoegaze soul sound that doesn't sound like anything else at all

― ufo, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 13:27 (six years ago)

shortly after I wrote this "my time (has come)" came on and I remembered why I underrated it in the first place, and it was because of that not good song
"I Wish I Was" one of his very prettiest, most aching numbers
― stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Sunday, 24 January 2021 02:22 (four years ago)
goodbye motherfucker
― mookieproof, Sunday, 24 January 2021 05:54 (four years ago)

― the least famous person you were surprised to discover (emsworth), Sunday, 24 January 2021 07:17 (four years ago)

― ufo, Sunday, 24 January 2021 08:12 (four years ago)
‘Blackberry Belle’ for me, but ‘Powder Burns’ was better than I remembered when I last played it.
― hamicle, Sunday, 24 January 2021 11:59 (four years ago)
otm and it isn't even five minutes long ffs
― mookieproof, Saturday, 6 February 2021 03:55 (four years ago)
i relistened to powder burns the other week and the first half it absolutely makes you think it is the best twilight singers and maybe the best dulli-related album ever
then "my time (has come)" happens
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 6 February 2021 03:57 (four years ago)
tbh i think he struggled with second sides through the entire period of powder burns -> do to the beast. they all get a little less distinguished in the back half, even though they finish strongly
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 6 February 2021 03:59 (four years ago)
situation dire
― mookieproof, Saturday, 6 February 2021 04:03 (four years ago)
is there a phrase/description/explanation for when a song goes all epic?
fuckin guy does it like 1000 times on powder burns
― mookieproof, Saturday, 6 February 2021 04:17 (four years ago)
the title track is hilariously bombastic, I love it
― stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Saturday, 6 February 2021 04:21 (four years ago)

― mookieproof, Saturday, 6 February 2021 04:43 (four years ago)

― stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Saturday, 6 February 2021 04:54 (four years ago)
my favorite song on twilight as played by the twilight singers is "king only", what a hot little number that is
― stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Saturday, 6 February 2021 04:57 (four years ago)
for me it is always "last temptation"
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 6 February 2021 05:18 (four years ago)
twilight in general extends the cinematic quality of black love but on that song in particular
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 6 February 2021 05:19 (four years ago)
Love -> Annie-Mae is the best song on Twilight As Played
