The Worst Band In the History of Music

Was anyone at the Guided By Voices gig at Barfly in Glasgow on Sat'day night? If so, could you please help me as I want to find out the name of the support band, who were, without a shadow of a doubt thee worst band I have ever seen in my life. They were from Liverpool (bad enough) and seemed to be labouring under the misapprehension that they were funny in some way - what they were of course was SHITE SHITE SHITE (continue ad infinitum)

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine attempted to make the worst album ever recorded with the Punching Alky Babies. Maybe the two of them should have a throwdown.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I have this weird daydream where I'm in the studio with the Counting Crows. At some point, I accost one of the guitar guys, beating him into a pulp, while I'm crying tears of dull pain.

What does it mean, doc?

gage o (gage o), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Tramp Attack was the band, according to the GBV Web site.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

How were GBV? I'm off to see them tomorrow...

NickB (NickB), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't Tramp Attack the original name for The Coral or something, and then this other band took it cos they're all pals, la? I missed them at GBV (in Cardiff... they were fabulous entertainment).

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I thought this thread was actually going to be ABOUT GBV being the worst band in the history of music. I'm so bummed now.

chuck, Monday, 29 September 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the worst band in the history of music is indeed Los Halos.

words cannot describe the pure torture i endure on the occasional morning when the spritely John Richards of KEXP in Seattle -- my clock radio station -- insists on throwing my heart, soul, and will to live in a blender by playing them.

there is absolutely nothing worse than a band who proudly flies the flag for sloppy crescendos, a forced sense of urgency, and the most painfully vacuous lyrics on the planet. what makes it worse is that they tend to pummel those vacuous lyrics over and over and over again.

"YOOOOO SHOUUUULD HAVE KNOOOOOOOWN............ BBY NOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW!!"

over and over and fucking over.

Los Halos has almost completely made me never want to listen to "space"/"drone" rock ever again.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 29 September 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I have absolutely no idea what the worst band ever were called. I saw them about 18 months ago in Bristol supporting Hood at The Cube. The only band I ever saw when (as the singer/guitarist struggled to tune up, taking over 5 minutes for this basic task between two songs) he was heckled by member of the audience (myself included) humming an E at him to give him a hint. It didn't help him.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 29 September 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

truly none of you have ever seen Dub Narcotic Sound System live. YUCK YUCK YUCK

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have. and at the very worst, Calvin is at least entertaining when he actually puts down his guitar and sings... not usually in the way he intended, mind you. This is based on the show at the last Yo Yo a Go Go in 2001.. it was strange and a little creepy. every kid in the audience silently venerated the man. Calvin is kinda like the Heino of his generation.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I gotta go with Loverboy. Wretched, abyssmal....

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I doubt anybody here have ever heard the worst band in the history of music. I, for one, am pretty sure I have not. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

dub narcotic is more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

loverboy's song about working for the weekend is a classic.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to play bass for the worst band in the history of music

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

hunters and collectors?

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

live, Dub Narcotic is fun like a root canal minus the anesthesia

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

dub narcotic is more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

A barrel of dead, rotting monkeys, maybe.

some pretty groovy outfits there though

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Some friends of mine played with them once. I mean, played music with them. Pretty girls. Unforgiveable music.

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

deep blue something

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

pearl jam. sure eddie's fine but the band sucks.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Taking a trip down to the memory vaults, that sounds suspiciously like Headfall. Name ring a bell?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

How were GBV? I'm off to see them tomorrow...

Errrrrrrr, OK but a bit sad really. Their new stuff isn't very good and Uncle Bob is so aware of the fact that they blew their big chance and are plummeting ever downwards - he is still very amusing and engaging but slightly embittered I feel. Still a good live act tho.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Most wretched band I ever saw was A.E.U.K. (unconfirmed: the initials stand for Ass Eaters U.K.) from NYC.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone in London ever see Bellwether? Jesus, they were something. Had a lot of conviction though. I'd pay £30 to see them again. I remember thinking, "This is what Venom must've been like". (Hint to guitar players - do NOT jerk the whammy bar all the way through the set while standing still, it looks like you're doing something else)

dave q, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Tramp Attack, I must warn you now to avoid them and, yes, I still insist that they are the worst band I have ever seen in my life

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(Believe it or not, the [live] Brazen Hussies were not the worst band I was ever in. That honor goes to a band I was in in Vancouver which didn't have a name as we formed 10 minutes before going on stage and used the headliners' gear. Proof that it was worse than the Hussies was that the guitar player whose Ibanez I borrowed beat the shit out of me after the show. In those days I was too drunk to feel any pain ever tho, so it wasn't a big thing)

dave q, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

worst live support band (bad "local bands" excepted) = the faith brothers = awful sub-style council pseudo-soul act who went on a lot about "commitment". They were supporting julian Cope, and they gave me a bad bad headache.

worst live main act = loop. I liked the rekkids, and supposedly they were great previously, but when i saw them the drummer was like diddler-diddler diddler-diddler diddler-diddler diddler-diddler diddler-diddler diddler-diddler diddler-diddler diddler-diddler diddler-diddler diddler-diddler diddler-diddler diddler-diddler x1000 AARGH GET ME OUT OF HERE.

worst on rekkid = tie between the orb or the clash, either of which will RUIN MY DAY if i hear more than 30s of them

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It's pretty obvious most of you (or even all of you) have never, ever had to deal with demo tapes.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never heard a dub narcotic record but i was dancing at the show.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I dimly remember an opening band called Mo' Please. Even the headliners voted that they be renamed No' Mo' Please.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Mencap, Headfall sounds right. Have seen said chap at t'Cube since, but haven't dared ask him. (inputting this on my phone, but pissed unlike Monday night - business trips, terrible thing... best chance for a sensible answer= next week, or ask me on my full email

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

as much as i like some records on K, i think they hold the record for most worst bands ever on one label. Karp alone put 'em over the top back in the day.

bucky wunderlick (bucky), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, KARP as one of the worst bands ever?! Geez. Tough crowd. I thought they ruled.

Hey what's wrong with Venom?

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 2 October 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Coldplay. Weezer. Type O Negative. Deep Lust (worst I've ever seen).

well, guess I am one of those people only showing up to trash bands I don't like. :)

daria g (daria g), Friday, 3 October 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Blessid Union of Souls

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 5 October 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Vicious Hairy Mary are the worst band I ever saw. I can't remember exactly why.

mentalist (mentalist), Sunday, 5 October 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

AC/DC

sleepingbag, Sunday, 17 September 2017 02:49 (eight years ago)

You're weird, sir.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 17 September 2017 02:55 (eight years ago)

I dunno, they're pretty boring and must rank very high on the "bands you're forced to hear by your neighbours" scale

albvivertine, Sunday, 17 September 2017 03:15 (eight years ago)

AC/DC is fine, but there's a certain type of person you always run into who is really performatively into AC/DC in an annoying way, who does lame semi-ironic rocking out schtick every time someone puts them on at a BBQ etc., and not that a band should be blamed for its fans, but there's something about their music itself that is very "Yeah, I'm ROCKING OUT, and btw I like SEX wink wink"

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Sunday, 17 September 2017 03:20 (eight years ago)

The Brian Johnson-led band can sometimes feel self-parodic in that way to me but I don't really get that from Bon Scott.
