A little broader than Worst Songs by Your Favorite Artists, this is a bit looser. For example...

Marquee Moon by Television would be perfect if not for u>"Guiding Light."

or....

The Sugarcubes would be perfect if not for the tiresome presence and honking annoyance that is Einar Orn.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the imperfections that make them perfect.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

...in your opinion.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Thought that went without saying. Forgot this was ILM.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just trying to stop this thread from being killed before it gets off the ground.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll get the ball rolling with an obvious one... eminem's singles thus far would be faultless were it not for "sing for the moment"

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

in my opinion.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Rap-rock would be perfect if not for all the dumbass mooks who've been performing it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The Rapture would be perfect were it not for their singer argh argh argh shut up!

(...in my opinion.)

cis (cis), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beatles' pop output would be perfect if not for all their annoying supporters and all the people who decided against all evidence that pop music was somehow headed in the wrong direction (= "dominated by African Americans and Phil Spector and swanky Rat Pack types") in the early 1960s and so therefore in need of divine intervention in the form of four likely lily-white lads from Liverpool, whose music is quite nice and got kind of fancy but in no way was on any kind of godlike level way up above everyone else the way it's always been shoved down my throat, thereby invoking the gag reflex and making me want to disrespect their nice singles and clever albums and get into arguments while drinking beer with Kenan Hebert on a lovely Texas night when we shoulda been checking out hott lesbians at that bar instead.

Um, I mean: Walking With a Panther would be perfect without "Two Different Worlds."

Nomorehaikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

big stars #1 record would be perfect without "the india song"

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Wyclef Jean's The Carnival would be perfect if not for that one "RAPE! RAPE!" skit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"154" would be perfect if not for "A Touching Display."

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Fountains of Wayne would be perfect if they could stop making fun of bikers and others who lack FoW's stunning sartorial sensibilities (including the annoying poor, who have the temerity not only to wear clip-on ties, but to actually spill soup on said ties), and if they could make peace with the fact that they (FoW) are innoffensive and meek, and therefore stop pretending to be crafty troublemakers, and if they could leave Stacy's mom alone, since she's really not all that interested, and...basically if they'd just shut the hell up, or at least cop to the fact that making fun of lower-middle class New Jersey folk for the appreciation of hipsters in NY and beyond = fighting a dubious battle. Possibly a careful reading of the Cars' lyrics might point them in the right direction.

dlp9001, Monday, 29 September 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Smiths would be good without Morrissey.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Monday, 29 September 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonic Youth would be perfect BUT FOR the obligatory 10 minutes of guitar wank on every record.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 29 September 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Pogues albums always have one wretched, deal-breaking stinker per disc.
Rum, Sodomy and the Lash would've been perfect if not for "The Gentleman Soldier"
If I Should Fall from Grace With God would've been perfect if not for "Fiesta"

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 29 September 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Siamese Dream would be perfect if not for "Spaceboy"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 29 September 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

oh humbug. the mellotron in that song is the background music to my best dreams.

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 29 September 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

REM would be perfect if not for Michael Stipe.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 September 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i like spaceboy too

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Monday, 29 September 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Can without Damo

oops (Oops), Monday, 29 September 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Automatic For The People would be virtually perfect without the good-willing-but-godawfully-grinding "Ignoreland"

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Easy. The Queen is Dead would be perfect without "Never Had No One Ever".

kickitcricket, Monday, 29 September 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Coldplay would be perfect if not for Chris Martin's goddamn stubble.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Vespertine would be perfect were it not for the last minute or so of Pagan Poetry.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It's only the stubble that bugs you, Anthony?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, they wouldn't be perfect then, but I certainly minded these guys less when I just saw the "Yellow" video. The smooth face and longer hair made Martin seem more pleasant and naive. His facial maturity makes his musical and lyrical inanities harder to accept.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

His facial maturity makes his musical and lyrical inanities harder to accept.

I think I'd be very hard-pressed to call Coldplay 'perfect' in any capacity (ah, witness the stumbling block of this thread...I should've have used the word 'perfect,' but rather 'much better' or 'vastly improved') I think I'd like Coldplay more if I didn't know what they looked like and if they didn't appear in their videos at all. Something about Chris Martin's persona tempers my enthusiasm for their otherwise perfectly respectable (if highly overrated) music.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Starsailor would have been, well, a pretty good band, hadn't it been for that extremely annoying voice of their lead singer.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo La Tengo's Electr-O-Pura would be damn well perfect, were it not for the brief, penultimate "goofy noize" song.

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

autechre would've been godhead if they retired after LP5.
LP5 would've been pristine if not for the hidden track.

Sir Leee (Leee), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Dylan's Street-Legal would be some kind of perfect, if not for "Is Your Love in Vain?" (a musically and lyrically weak iteration of the album's musical/lyrical ideas).

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Dylan's entire catalog would be perfect if not for Bob Dylan's voice.

:::ducks:::

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Kind of agree with Alex in NYC here :-)
(Although there is nothing that could possibly make those blues numbers apparent on most of his albums even remotely close to "perfect"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i like spaceboy alot too.

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Who would you rather hear sing all of Dylan's songs, though? Robbie Williams?

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

*clenches fist, waits for Alex to stop ducking*

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

though to be fair, I totally would have agreed with you when I was in middle school, Alex.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Who would you rather hear sing all of Dylan's songs, though? Robbie Williams?

Roger McGuinn would be a good choice IMO....

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Dylan has one of the greatest rock and roll voices. < /a cliché as true as it is well-worn >

His singing is, for me at least, a big part of his appeal. (I don't think I've ever heard a Dylan cover that I really liked.)

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

His 'N' Hers would be the absolute pinnacle of tippety-top perfection if not for "Happy Endings". Bah.

I'd like Dylan's songs more if they were all sung by George Formby. < /Chris Morris>

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

ilm would be perfect if not for all the people on it

trife (simon_tr), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

trife's name would be perfect if not for the "e"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 29 September 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

trife is an artificial intellectual shokkah?

...okey! okey, you switch off yer lasereyes - i go on 'nother thread.
which wouldn't be perfect but - already going!
going!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

R.E.M.'s "Harborcoat" would be perfect without the accordian in the bridge (I think; maybe I actually like that, too).

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

the album Sunshine Superman would be perfect if not for the excessively long "Legend of a Girl Child Linda"

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Speakerboxx would be perfect if not for Jay-Z's fucking horrible pre-hook & verse on the otherwise spectacular "Flip Flop Rock".

The Love Below would be perfect if not for the part where Andre's voice goes ridiculously out-of-key in "She's Alive".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

T. Rex's Electric Warrier would be perfect if not for "Rip Off"

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

than?

thom west (thom w), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I was actually just thinking the other day, that song "Crush" would be great if it weren't for that horrible "vanilla sky" bit.

Josh Timmermann (Josh Timmermann), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

This Is Hardcore would be perfect if not for Like A Friend (to continue w/ Charlie's Pulp bent). Letdown on an otherwise purr-fectly seductive album.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i adore the song but it shouldn't be on the album. it was a b-side in the UK..

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 2 October 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Peter Murphy's Deep would be perfect if not for "Roll Call"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

:-(

(I would substitute the 'rap' on "Shy" for the choice.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What da fuck, has the world gone mad?

Exhibit 1: Marquee Moon by Television would be perfect if not for "Guiding Light."

But but but "Guiding Light" is beautiful. You mean "Torn Curtain" shurely???!!??

Even worse -

Exhibit 2: "154" would be perfect if not for "A Touching Display."

Are you all on drugs or sumthin'?

Dadaismus (Dada), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, Ned, you're right

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

But AT LEAST take off the reprise.. it accomplishes nothing

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

But but but "Guiding Light" is beautiful. You mean "Torn Curtain" shurely???!!??

No, I meant "Guiding Light".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"i disapprove of what you say, but i will defend to the death your right to say it"

Well, maybe not to the death.

Dadaismus (Dada), Saturday, 20 March 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Original Pirate Material would be perfect if it didn't have "Geezers Need Excitement."

Zaireeka would be perfect if it didn't have "A Machine in India."

Every OutKast album ever made with the possible exception of Stankonia w.b.p.i.i.d.h. all those stupid unfunny lameass skits.

Melody A.M. w.b.p.i.i.d.h. "She's So"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 20 March 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Dylan would be perfect if not for...nothing
Dylan is perfect

zach in NM, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Tortoise would be perfect if not for the obligatory spaghetti western song on every album

Gillian Welch's "Hell Among the Yearlings" would actually be fairly perfect if not for that Sun Records-style song near the end.

Same goes for Pink Floyd's "Echoes" and the song "Seamus," as well as "Houses of the Holy" if not for "D'Yer Maker".

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Trout Mask Replica would be tighter and more nearly perfect without "Hair Pie: Bake 1" & "Hair Pie: Bake 2"

You know, I read this entire thread, and the two stated were my exact reaction. (Exhibit 2: Come on, you just picked a track at random here. Try another.)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Eels would be perfect if not for the fact that E occasionally goes through periods of his life where no family members die, so he attempts to write "uplifting" music.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

T. Rex's Electric Warrier would be perfect if not for "Rip Off"
-- christoff (christof...), October 1st, 2003.

RIPOFF IS COMPLETELY OBVIOUSLY TO ANYONE WITH EARS THE BEST SONG ON THAT ALBUM

That warranted screaming.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bookends" would have been perfect hadn't it been for the 4 minutes waste of time that is "Voice Of Old People"
