Hip Hop S.O.S

OK,
I've been asked to write a book about the 100 most important hip-hop tracks ever.
Obviously I have my list. I don't want loads of more lists. But I do want, from anyone who cares to help, at least one (or maybe a few) tracks that they think I might overlook that absolutely should be in such a tome. So, no point saying 'Rappers Delight' cos that's too easy. But 'important' can also just mean good.
Any help at all would be extremely appreciated. I might even send you a demo of my band. This is not an idle threat.

what tracks have you come up with so far?
it'd probably be easier to look at the list and see what's been left out...

I hope "Party Up" is on there

There's a great early ('82?) track I don't think I've ever seen written about or even listed (it might be in David Toop's discography, but I don't think so) called "Disco Dream" by Mean Machine (got it off a UK import that features all early Sugarhill tracks). "Pull Up to the Bumper" + Kazoos & whistles + one of the fastest rapping bits ever = it's amazing. It's probably in my own top 25, but maybe not yours.

Brother D's "How we gonna make the black nation rise"
First socially-conscious type of rap song?

Then again, I heard about that on some rap history site, so I guess I'm the only one who had missed out on that until recently.....Müh.

Your list will be incomplete without "Whistle While You Twerk" and "Bia Bia."

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

why trife?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

it was like one big hiphop 'use other facts plz', also disses the beatnuts for 'pointless thug lyrics'

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

duck rock. malcolm mcclaren. if its in the list then soz. but i go with the flow that greg wilson laid down @ ireallylovemusic.co.uk. that one track opened up my ears and i have never looked back. and still that track gets sampled. its not a Col Track and all underground. but damn it was fine stuff.
that and World Destruction by Bambatta/Lydon .. well they were important to me. ta.

Ultramagnetic MCs, "Ego Trippin'" or "Funky" (blueprint for East Coast underground; name an MC or a producer that started in the late '80s and they probably ripped off/were "inspired" by the Ultramagnetics in some way)
Chuck Chillout, "Hip Hop on Wax Vol 1" (classic post-"Adventures of Grandmaster Flash..." scratch record, a bit more technically advanced and in tune with the 808 mid '80s sound)
Schooly D, "P.S.K. (What Does It Mean?)" (the most hardcore hip-hop track to that point in time [1985] and a progenitor of gangsta rap)

You also have to mention that Fatback Band's "King Tim III" is the real first rap hit single (or at least the first hit single to include rapping; it's also 100x better than Sugarhill Gang)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

And I'm not sure how "influential"/"important" it is, but fuck it, throw in the D.O.C.'s "It's Funky Enough" because it's THE BEST LATE '80S JEEP BEAT EVER

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

then his larynx was crushed.
