So far I've got (these are songs he knows really well and likes a lot):

Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood"
Outkast "Hey Ya!"
White Stripes "We Are Gonna Be Friends"
Fishbone "Ugly"
Cibo Matto "Know Your Chicken"
Ween "Hey There Fancypants"

What are some more twee-ass songs that might appeal to this four-year-old?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What? No TMBG? I'm so ashamed of you.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

there are some King Kong songs that have some cuss words in them but have very basic and steady rhythms and lyrics. But "Know Your Chicken" has cuss words too. But maybe you trust your son.
Mostly tunes off Kingdom of Kong "Games" "Imposter Monster" "Energy" "Mars" (features the classic lines, "There used to be life on Mars, now there's life on Earth. What on Earth happened to Mars?" and then later on, "Grandma came from Mars."

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty much anything by Huey "Piano" Smith and the Clowns.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Bis - Sugar, Sugar, Candy, Pop

mei (mei), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shit! I can't believe myself for forgetting TMBG! Sometimes when I play "Dead" on the piano and sing it he sings along, other times he says "stop playing pinano!" (he calls it "pinano") So yeah, "Dead" goes on there.

I'll check this King Kong. (fwiw both "Know Your Chicken" and "Clint Eastwood" have cuss words, and "Hey Ya!" has that bit about "don't want to meet your momma/just want to make you cum-a", but I always tell him their just words, there's nothing wrong with 'em, just don't say 'em in front of grown-ups)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh Bis is a good suggestion. I might also put an Air track on here (prob'ly "Remember Together" or whatever it's called from Moon Safari).

And my mom just told me I have to put a Talking Heads song on there, so I think "I Zimbra"'s going on there, cuz he dances like mad to that song.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it's not like he ain't gonna hear them, so I think, as a non-parent (so I know how kids SHOULD be reared), that's it's best for kids to learn what words are about and what they're for, or else they'll just lump all the words they're "not supposed to say" together with no understanding and get the tar beat out of them for calling somebody the n-word, when they weren't trying to be racist but they just knew that was the worst thing you could call someone and that someone had just pulled their ear really really hard.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The Human League, "(Keep Feeling) Fascination"

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a few years now since my own son was four, but I remember that at that age he was conspicuously taken with several (*sigh*) Beatles songs from A Hard Day's Night, jumping merrily upon this bed whenever he heard them...

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

lightning bolt or the locust

steer your kid away from that radio garbage

dean gulberry, Monday, 29 September 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh "Basketball" and "Give Up the Funk" are both great suggestions! And I was thinking about Beatles songs but he likes "When I'm 64" and that song irks me.

He laughs at Lightning Bolt. He says it sounds like the dishwasher.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

for Talking Heads, "Stay Up Late" might be good

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

make me a mixtape of your dishwasher
pleeze

dean gulberry, Monday, 29 September 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread makes me want to procreate.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 29 September 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Peter, Paul and Mary - Puff The Magic Dragon.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 29 September 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's the tracklist for my dishwasher mix-tape:

1. Pre-Soak
2. First Rinse
3. Soap Cycle
4. Second Rinse
5. Heat Dry
6. First Rinse (DJ Premier rumpshaka remix)

That's a really good one Chris; my parents played "Puff..." for me a lot when I was a young 'un.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

there's some really awesome Spongebob Squarepants songs too.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 29 September 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"The You & Me Song" by the Wannadies

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 29 September 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

David Byrne's "Don't Fence Me In" from the Red Hot & Blue Cole Porter tribute

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 29 September 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, you'd love King Kong. It's Ethan Buckler from Slint, and other assorted Louisville musicians. I've only heard a couple records, but my favorite is Me Hungry: a concept album about a caveman, featuring a female narrator singing and a Buckler primtively grunting along to an organ-happy Booker T. / B-52's groove. (Sample lyric: "Me want berries from the bushes!")

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 29 September 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! Okay, regardless of whether or not my son likes it, I'm checking out King Kong ASAP (and wtf's up with all these awesome bands from Louisville that I'm only just hearing about for the first time? it's not even an hour's drive away!).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

jel -- (jel), Monday, 29 September 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Huggy Bear, and all those seventies and eighties pop songs re-recorded for Sesame Street that I remember from my childhood.

"We are living in a cereal world, and I am a cereal girl..."

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 29 September 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, and "Bad Babysitter" by Princess Superstar.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 29 September 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The Apples in Stereo live in my town now! Their music is definitely appropriate; that one song they had on the Powerpuff Girls soundtrack was great!

Actually it's neat that you bring up "Requiem" Dan, cuz when he was a very wee one (up to about 6 months old) we played that for him quite often; I was listening to it a lot myself at the time as well.

And I love "Bad Babysitter", but I think I get much more of a kick out of it than he would; understanding dirty jokes and whatnot, y'see.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Every child should here the Brahms "Requiem" and "Kittens" by Underworld.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 September 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I have started making mine (CD not child)

well, it's a start!
and what with one thing leading to the other...

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

d00d, Plaid's "Dang Spot"! It goes >>SPLAT<< right in the beginning!

Sir Leee (Leee), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Make that sound: >>OOMPH DONG SPLAT SQUISH<<

Sir Leee (Leee), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I second Huey Smith. Anything.

It isn't a song I return to personally, but I can't imagine how you could go wrong with "Octopus' Garden" by Ringo and Co.

Lee G (Lee G), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

some Jonathon Richman would be good. Perhaps "party in the woods tonight". Lots of fun animal noises there.

pauls00, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i loved listening to the kinks when i was very young (and i still do!) so maybe try "till the end of the day" or something

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

super furry animals for kids is a total winner -- they have cartoons and goofy words and everything! just don't play him that song that goes 'they don't give a fuck about anybody else'...that's the only song of theirs i can remember with cuss words in it, though. you could put something from 'mwng' on it -- that way, even if it has a dirty word, it's in welsh so it doesn't much matter!

my favorite bands when i was small were the beatles and twisted sister

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

A very cool song that makes me want to jump on my bed is ‘You Can Count On Me’ by Sammy Davis, Jr. It’s the Hawai’i 5-0 theme... but with lyrics! Great song.
