The Free Design : Classy or Kitch? S&D

I can't make up my mind. I think this is because of a tendancy of me to like cheese. Are their glossy covers and sickly sweet originals as great as the cover art on their seista reissues? Is the new disc on Marina any good?

marianna, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classy. Classy. Classy.

Search: their cover of Eleanor Rigby, Kites Are Fun, California Dreamin', A Man And A Woman.

Destroy: To be able to destroy anything by FD you'd have to be one very sick individual...

jamesmichaelward, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've got the new album: 'Cosmic Peekaboo'
I can't take it, it's too much feather-soft MOR. I like the idea of them but... they go TOO FAR! Those gossamer harmonies - so lightweight! So airy! All sheen, nothing to get a hold of.
'Springtime' I like. It's sweet - but arn't they all - but they rein in their sickly smooth side just enough and the lyrics are cool: "The mood in the air is changing / The sky is a bit more blue / Somebody said that springtime came today / and all I can think of is you" I like that!
But then they follow it with 'The Hook' with is them moaning about 'modern music': "You can be a genius but you won't get far... / You really need an earring in your navel or lip" and then: "I miss the live musicians like Ringo Starr and Gadd: / Part of a dying race / but their samples can be had." it wouldn't be so bad but the music is awful music hall nonsense.

I dunno. Try before you buy.

DavidM, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I dunno -- I think some of their material is good at face value, and I sort of enjoy the challenge presented by the rest of it. After all, their sound is pretty much the biggest taboo available to an American of my age group: tons and tons of cultural weight are on your shoulders saying "you cannot possibly enjoy this, for it is cheesy."

Which isn't to say that I like it simply in an ironic or kitsch sense; I think I just enjoy the brain activity that goes along with listening to something I feel I'm supposed to dismiss and quite enjoying a lot of it. Some lobe says "No, please no!" and another says "Well, that's quite nice."

Nitsuh, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's also the giving-up quality that comes with that experience. You hear "Kites are fun!" and your brain drops its walls: "Yes," you have to admit, "kites really are a lot of fun."

Nitsuh, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Personally I think their cover of Eleanor Rigby is horrible, and much of their stuff is just dull, but hearing things like Kites Are Fun, I Found Love or Don't Turn Away make me forget that, because they are all absolute corkers. And all Dedrick penned, of course.

Ally C, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A little cheesy, yes. Eerie as fuck at times, also. Their appeal in terms of spookily perfect brother-sister multi-part harmonies and was-that-another-evangelical-reference? weirdness cannot be denied.

Search: "Bubbles", "Ivy On A Windy Day" and that one on the Siesta 7" that's not available on the re-issue comps.

Siesta re-issues mastered from vinyl LP, in case anyone's bothered about that kind of thing (see also: Soul Jazz's ESG comp). I guess the advent of the CD burner has made the idea of the 'lost master' a thing of the past...

Michael Jones, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dud, destroy pretty much everything. the new album is an abomination. bubbles has a couple lovely numbers but on the whole i find the girl's voice incredibly annoying. does it only have one pitch? the times when mr free design sings are a bit more bearable as when he croons 'michelle'.

keith, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just heard "Kites Are Fun" for the first time late last year and suddenly my entire sublimated childhood came rushing back at me in all its psychedelic day-glo flower-power glory. At last I had something to supplant all those bad "Brady Bunch" reruns in my feeble brain. For those not old enough to remember that late-60s period of sunny optimism, the world of The Free Design must sound like a very strange Atlantis indeed, and I pity your wised-up, cynical youth. (And yet I made a compilation for a friend about my age and he very nearly smashed the stereo.) The true innovator/Svengali/Fuhrer here is that Nehru-necked easy-listening innovator, Ray Conniff, of course.

two years pass...
After being shocked by their inclusion in the Druggy Music thread, I went home and listened to their cover of "Light My Fire" while high. It works.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I finally got to hear them! I managed to d/l "I Found Love" and I like it I guess, but it didn't live up to Fritz's awesome description of them (which I can't find at the moment.)

Sean (Sean), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I really liked their version of the Beach Boys' "Endless Harmony" on the Caroline Now! tribute album...

After being shocked by their inclusion in the Druggy Music thread, I went home and listened to their cover of "Light My Fire" while high. It works.

Also, I once had a dream that my composition teacher in college taught us how to write music for listeners on drugs -- ie specific techniques that would affect listeners on specific drugs.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a big remix project with them coming out with stereolab (who have already remixed one of their songs), belle and sebastian (ugh), and peanut butter wolf. i was interviewing peanut butter wolf when he was doing his remix. great, but little left from the original.

s>c>, Friday, 12 September 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really fair to judge them by Cosmic Peekaboo, since it's a reunion album recorded long after their heyday. Light My Fire is my favorite of theirs...it goes into an *such* a trippy, jazzy section at the instrumental break. Their lyrics aren't always as happy as they seem. For example, Daniel Dolphin has a pretty strange narrative. And, of course, the production is amazing...sounds fantastic on a good stereo.

dlp9001, Friday, 12 September 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

their original LPs (well, some of them) have finally been reissued in an affordable manner

I thought I was going to be able to live with my best-of disc. But Daniel Dolphin is a real friend.

I just got "You Could Be Born Again, it was perfect for the sunny windswept day I listened to it, obviously

their Christmas album is really good too

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 5 February 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

went to amoeba today and they put on One on One. liked it, liked it, then it got to "Friends (Thank You All)" and my head caved in. Bought it, have already listened to it four additional times.

(Jon L), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

note to self: buy everything by this group

(Jon L), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

reissuing last 3 albums from the 70s soon (Light in the Attic)

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 06:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Are they not all out now? I just bought ONE BY ONE, SONGS FOR VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE and THERE IS A SONG. I love them.

By the way, any more feedback about the remixes? I'm tempted but I'd rather wait and get them on CD - I assume they will come out someday.

everything, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i have the second remix 12". it's mostly rub. certainly avoid if you're a FD fan.

yes, the reissues of the last three 70s LPs are out, although distribution to UK is patchy. i have seen SFVIP in a couple of shops but no sign of OBO or TIAS yet (and i've been looking)

I want to get one of the reissues of the original albums instead of getting a best of comp. Which one should I get?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 23 July 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Should I go w/ Stars/Time/Bubbles/Love?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 23 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

they're so amazing

's/t/b/l' is probably the most representative, but 'one by one' goes deeper for me, a slicker, calmer sound than the earlier boppy stuff, five impossible live tracks with full symphony orchestra, and the best tracks on it aren't on any compilations. "friends (thank you all)" is a real moment.

the only other full album I know is 'kites' though so I'm still learning

milton parker (Jon L), Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

one by one' also has their truly fucked cover of 'light my fire'

milton parker (Jon L), Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

adam, pretty funny that we're nearly on the same page again. just a few weeks ago i was on a heavy free design/soft pop kick.

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Sunday, 24 July 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

I don't have One on One -- I guess I should, tho'...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 24 July 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

Yes, yes, One By One reissue is awesome.

After that, of the other Light In The Attic reissues, definitely get Stars/Time/ Bubbles/Love and You Could be Born Again.

Heaven / Earth is a notch below those three, but does have some essential stuff on it.

Kites Are Fun is OK, has a few great tracks. Sing Foe Very Important People is their children's (and therefore their twee-est) record, I've only heard half of this.

The last album, There Is A Song I have yet to hear at all, but is on my 'to buy' list.

There are mp3s on the LITA site I linked to above.

FD's main songwriter Chris Dedrick's solo album from 1972 has also just been reissued on CD by a Korean label - it's been retitled Wishes for the occasion. May be hard to get hold of. A friend of mine who wrote the liner notes is sending me a copy. I will report back when heard.

Jeff W (zebedee), Sunday, 24 July 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Some of the Design's stuff breaks the twee-meter; there will be tracks on every record that you can't deal with. But clever vocal arrangements really do it for me (big Beach Boys and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross fan), so I look past the tunes I can't handle.

It's difficult to single out one or two records because every CD has fantastic tracks on it, but since I started with Stars and Born Again I'll second those.

Thanks for the info on the later records like One on One, I held the damn thing at Dusty Groove and couldn't make up my mind about it since I wasn't sure how good it would be. I'll buy it now.

The remix CD (both 12"s collected) is nice from what I heard, the cover of I Found Love was great.

Looking forward to hearing about the Dedrick solo, Jeff.

I got the new vinyl reissue of Stars/Time/Bubbles/Love and the quality of the pressing is kind of so-so. Kind of silly to do a mediocre job on albums by such a "hi-fi listening pleasure" band, but oh well - they're really inexpensively priced and the covers are beautiful. It actually sounds good, but get a little distorted when there's a lot of volume and more so as it gets closer to the center of the record.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 8 August 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

just last weekend i picked up the There is a Song album and it's pretty great. Kum Ba Yah is a little hard to take even though the melodies are so pretty. "The Symbols Ring" is probably the best Free Design song i've ever heard, and it's not on the greatest hits cd i already had.

It's interesting -- I bought it at Kim's thinking it would be really wacky and experimental. But based on the first four or five tracks I've heard, it's very trad singer-songwritery...but has that Free Design delicate-ness about it. Could be a welcome surprise...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 2 January 2006 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's nearly all like that. It was kind of an emotional time in Dedrick's life - his marriage had just broken down, he was in a rebound relationship etc. Plus he'd not long relocated to Canada. So there's lots of sensitive musings on love, home, one's place in the world and so on. It's pretty good; I miss the complex FD harmonies, but the writing is still unmistakeably Dedrick. One of the "reissues" of '05. (It's not actually a reissue, contrary to what I said before. In fact this is it's first ever release. He made it without a record deal in '72 and no label wanted to pick it up for release then.)

Apologies for not posting this earlier, as I promised.

Not really related to the content of the records as such, but anyone else who hasn't picked these up yet, you can get them for around $5 apiece from Light in the Attic. Huzzah, etc.

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

I had no idea he did the music for Guy Maddin's 'The Saddest Music In The World'!

Glad he got to live long enough to see people catch up with his incredible band. And it's time for me to finally check out his solo album, I feel like I've been saving it for the right moment.
