He's playing a DJ set in cork, you know. Any Irish folks going that way?

Where in Cork? and when?

Michael Bourke, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn. I'd love to but I got work the following day.

Michael Bourke, Monday, 20 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

call in sick

anthony, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, I mean, Christ, how would you explain it to your kids? "YOU COULD HAVE SEEN APHEX TWIN IN 2001 AND YOU DIDN'T FUCKING GO?!?!?"

Dave M., Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

surely he's been to Cork before and will be again?

is he actually that good a live prospect? Like a lot of those Warp acts he is maybe more someone to listen to at home.

That said, I recommend going to the thing on thursday night, getting completely hammered, and coming into work the next day with a monster hangover.

The Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You'd want to be hammered to get through one of his sets particularly if he starts being "ironic". Sorry Ricky, but if the local parish disco plays Wham its really shite so I don't see how you playing it when people have paid money to see you is any better. better still you could give us some plinky plonky industrial noise. Warp Records is musical masturbation apart from Boards of Canada, Autechre and a few others. I used to like Aphex but wheres the quality control, someone needs to sit him down and beat it into him, thats not ironic its just shit. I posted a reply cos I'm irish mainly I admit.

Ronan Fitzgerald, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

judging by recent outings i think it entirely likely he will play a straight up acid house set.

gareth, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Btw anyone check out that Universal Indicator mix-cd on Rephlex? I just loveeeee acid house.

Omar, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well Omar, i have the blue one on vinyl, but haven't heard the other 2 (as they've now been re-issued i guess i can pick that cd up).

gareth, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

FUCK OFF YOU BASTARDS!!! I just started a new job so I can't pull a sickie as much as I'd love to. And I live in Limerick so there's no chance I'd be driving all the way to work (especially as I don't own a car) with a fucked-up head. Why Thursday night anyway? That's a feckin' ridiculous night to have an Aphex Twin gig on. Jesus.

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omar, can you explain to me the concept/idea/point of the Universal Indicator thingy? I saw it in a shop with the "the best of techno/acid/new beat" thing on it and was greatly intrigued. What is it?

Actually, there's something I need: new beat.

Tim, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well there isn't actually too much information available. All I know is that Rephlex put out some colour-coded 12"s back in the days with some pretty high grade acid on it. Of course they became collector items, so now they put them on CD as a mix by Mike Dread. It's well amazing.

And you can read my somewhat bug-eyed review here below the Aaliyah review.

Omar, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The set was very delightful. Four hours or so with occasional (30 second) bursts of ambience. Very draining, but enjoyable. Monsieur James ran into the crowd near the end, and briefly disappeared while his dancer feigned heart attacks and threw water. The music didn't stop, even at that point, but he did return at the very end.

David, Saturday, 25 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did he play any Wham! tho'?

Michael Bourke, Saturday, 25 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No. It was mostly of _RDJ Album_ ilk. I *think* he played the Chemical Brothers' "Leave Home".
