Tuomas, do you really hate Warp/Rephlex as much as you appear to on ILX? (You're quite within your rights to, I'm just curious)

I hate Aphex for his self-indulgence, Autechre for their coldness and lack of human qualities, and IDM general for being artsy, ironic "dance" music you can't dance to. I do however like less cold, less ironic IDM artists like µ-ziq and Mouse on Mars, or at least I like some of their songs. I don't hate Warp/Rephlex as whole (though I've yet to hear a Rephlex artist I like besides µ-ziq), but I hate the IDM attitude which reeks of rockism. I myself grew up with irony-free hedonistic rave music, and the idea that electronic music needs to be "intelligent" to be good seems laughable to me. Back before the IDM boom even Aphex used to produce good tracks (remember "Didgeridoo"?). However, this doesn't mean I dis "electronic listening music" as a whole, just the self-indulgent side of it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, just when you thought people were finally getting bored of rock music it's become fashionable again.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't necessarily call lynard skynard "shit," but look at what they are inspiring these days

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

whoever is responsable for nü-metal - fusing metal and rap was the biggest mistake ever. anthrax, limp bizkit - i'm looking at you.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

rage against the machine were great, but they were the ones who inspired all this fred durst-ness. except ratm had something to say, they could write songs, they could play like hell, and they had a heart. each.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

no, i think faith no more probably inspired more of that garbage than ratm. but i like fmn too much to hold them accountable.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

you are OTM about faith no more, they were every bit as important in that regard as RATM. but they were also great, their music was weeeeiiiiiird, and Patton's poetry was bitter, estranged and caleidoscopic. it's like all that new shit (lame biscuit, p.o.d, linkin park, what have you) are mediocre musicians/poets trying to fill the same hole as their pretty amazing predecessors, but of course fail terribly to do so.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

It's beginning to seem like anti-rockism is the new rockism.

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ahem ... Ned, that was just to state a fact. They did have something to say. That can't be denied. Whether it was naive or militant or whatever, it distinguishes them from ALL Frëd Dürst-esque Nü Mëtäl ever mäde. If they were playing with open cards, fine with me. But the reason these fucking brats deserve a whipping, is that they act like hold some kind of valuable truth for the angst-ridden teenager. The don't. They only suck ass and nurture from the fear in the western world. Fuck'em.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I admit getting into a full-blown RATM argument at this stage in my life ranks about as high on appeal with me as a detailed discussion of one's corns and planar warts. So I will acknowledge that I agree with you on the worth(lessness) of Nu-Metal, love the use of the umlauts, and will leave it at that.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"Korn, Dave Matthews, Tupac Shakur", couldn't agree more. This thread should have been made for these three bands/jackasses.this three people probably can be set to blame for most of the shit (and I mean it in a derragotory way) that plagues us today. Yet, I can't say the same of the other attacks people have made on other bands on this thread.

Cacaman Flores, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Green Day is great and so are Blink and Sum-41
The answer is Pearl Jam, particularly Eddie Vedder's singing voice

Tuomas, you write: "...but I hate the IDM attitude which reeks of rockism." I'm not sure I can draw the same conclusion... how do you figure?

Also, "Autechre for their coldness and lack of human qualities" = use other cliches please. ;-)

Clarke B., Wednesday, 1 October 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Clarke B., you're back! You were off having fun, weren't you?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Tuomas, you write: "...but I hate the IDM attitude which reeks of rockism." I'm not sure I can draw the same conclusion... how do you figure?

Have you read the zillion articles about Aphex composing his track in lucid sleep, or how he has tons of tracks lying around he just won't bother to release, or how he bought a tank etc. In contemporary electronic music, I've always liked is that is (or was?) all about the music and nothing about the musician and his tortured soul. But this current return of auteurism reflects in IDM music as well; instead of just creating great sounds and beats the producers need to put all these ironic twists and cracks into the music (which do nothing but detach the listener from it) to prove that they're artists with a capital A. Me, I'll choose a faceless house track over pretentious art shit anyday. I'm not saying all IDM producers are like this, but it seems to be the prevalent attitude.

Also, "Autechre for their coldness and lack of human qualities" = use other cliches please. ;-)

What's wrong with stating the truth?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Frankly, Autechre don't deserve any deeper analysis than that...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Ned, in this stage of youf life, you just dig. and thanks for the praise om my umlauts. i'm very proud of 'em.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

did, did, not dig. maybe i ought to get something to eat today...

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

but maybe you just dig, too? it sure sounds very nice and relaxed ...

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

that was hardly a "full-blown" ratm argument, kid. trust me, you have not yet seen ned argue.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Suede

freedom dupont, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Also, "Autechre for their coldness and lack of human qualities" = use other cliches please. ;-)

What's wrong with stating the truth?"

Because its not. I find some warmth and "human qualities" in their work (say, "krib" or "cichli"), but until someone invents a humanity meter and properly measures the humanity in autechre its just a matter of personal judgment. And a little coldness and inhumanity is good now and then.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

put all these ironic twists and cracks into the music (which do nothing but detach the listener from it)

Not this listener!

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"Pink Floyd, Joy Division, The Smiths, Cure, Nirvana, Oasis, Radiohead, Aphex Twin, Autechre."

every last one of these bands are classic. well, not oasis, but they're certainly not shit.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the smiths are a classic something

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

So hard to pin down, but class: Nirvana, Suede, Pulp, T-Rex, Aphex Twin, Queen, Supergrass....OTM about Autechre (despite their clearly being a cliche magnet)

the smiths are a classic something

"....example in cheeky melancholia" might be the words you're reaching for.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)
