The new new Firewater

Tod A. and company are having a busy year, dropping a covers album just a couple of months after their last release.
Includes their interpretations of The Beat Goes On, Folsom Prison Blues, Hey Bulldog, Diamonds and Gold, Some Velvet Morning and more.
I was a little hesitant when I got the promo this morning, but it's really, really good. Hits me the way that Eric Bachmann EP did.
This, I realize, isn't a question.

sounds interesting...anyone have a full tracklisting? Alex? 'The Man On The Burning Tightrope' hasn't grown on me much but I'm looking forward to the tour in December.

I've only heard the covers of "This Town" (Sinatra), "The Beat Goes On" (Sonny & Cher, obv.), "Hey Bulldog" (you know who) and "Storm Warning (an obscure Ska Trojan act called Lyn Taitt & the Comets).

"This Town" is absolutely fuckin' SMOKIN'!. I'm lukewarm on the S&C cover (I am not a member of that particular cult). Britta from Luna fills in for Cher. The cover of "Hey Bulldog" has its heart in the right place, but it's a bit of a mess. "Storm Warning" is actually quite cool. Very curious to hear the rest.

December 5 at Bowery Ballroom....be there or be a rhombus.

Latest development: certain Jetset operatives are suggesting the release of Songs We Should've Written is being pushed back to 2004.

Well, that would give me a couple of extra days to write the review.

four years pass...

An even newer new new Firewater is due out next April on my favorite label, Bloodshot. I've been kinda underwhelmed by everything after the first two (and the covers album was really disappointing) but this one sounds like it could really be fantastic. Tod A traveled across the Middle East for inspiration, see this video:

It's available on eMusic now, too. I was debating whether to download it.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 May 2008 00:39 (seventeen years ago)

you should. its great (also, eMusic keeps getting better and better)

John Justen, Friday, 9 May 2008 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

eMusic keeps getting better and better.

I think so, too, but I wonder if that's a common opinion. It's off-topic, I know, but eMusic recently had to abruptly take the Rolling Stones catalogue -- which they just got a month before -- offline (who cares!, I say, but I imagine a lot of people were stoked to see The Rolling Stones turn up on eMusic (who, BTW, did a great job promoting their catalogue)).

The album sounds like a winner based on what I heard. Kinda surprised it's being put out on Bloodshot though. I'm not complaining, just surprised is all .

the new album is so fucking good. "this is my life," "three legged dog" and "already gone" especially.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Sunday, 25 May 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

They're playing again tonight at the Bowery Ballroom. I'm going again. So should you.
