my spacey rock band terrene just recorded an ep. it is in the mixing stages now and i am very excited.
i'm also starting to collaborate with my friend who plays bass and trumpet and is real good with the computer. the stuff he'e been doing lately is sort of crunchy mum type stuff but less twee. we both are open to all sorts of ideas so i'm excited as to what will happen.

duane, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I recorded a solo album, just to prove that I could, and to get back to basics. (See the madness/creativity thread on ILE for more on that.) I'm only sending copies to my friends right now while I figure out what I wanna do with it.

There's an MP3 of one track, and some pretty pictures that go with it here if you wanna listen to it. But I really don't feel like promoting/justifying/defending/being told it's shit right now.

If I can work out PayPal, I might put out the album myself and sell it over the internet cause I can't even think of a label that would be interested in this sort of thing, and besides, I'm just fed up with The Music Industrie as a nebulous whole.

But that's what I'm up to. And looking for a dayjob.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if you can can me a musician because I've only been doing it for about 8 months or so. But "Afton" as we've named ourselves have recorded a few songs. Whoopee.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Mostly just recording, as usual. I'm seeing John Zorn in October, at two shows organized by my friend who is also passing my stuff onto him. Hopefully he doesn't hate it. The last thing I recorded is here.

ive just started the first album for my new project. i'm excited!

joni, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Working on the Shirokuma live set (I finished producing his album about 3 months ago), this has involved getting a couple of mates in to somehow make the madness happen. Rehersals going very well, we're waiting to hear if the label will buy us some neccesary kit and what venues we'll be hitting (watch this space).

I'm producing an album by another electronic artist soon, which should be damn cool as I've got a free reign to go at it as much as I can. Looking forward to that one immensely. The same label might have an EP for me too.

Next up is a collaborative album, involving 20 artists. Details are top secret atm, but rest assured its a very interesting concept that should be a decent listen.

And to top that I'm putting out my own record next year, which I've had no time to work on due to all this other stuff. This isn't really a problem as its only a bit of tidying up that needs doing. As soon as anything concrete is in place over it I'll tell all.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

My band Gr33n Th30ry broke up. We had like 16 songs we had just started tracking the rhythm tracks on.

I've been playing drums for my friend Ace's band Th3 M4nn3qu1ns, which occupies that singular sonic niche between Cindy Lauper and KISS (she hates when I say she sounds like Cindy Lauper).

I've been recording a bunch of rap songs with some beats my buddy Jerry (above-mentioned Ace's boyfriend, guitarist from my ex-band) made; I was really surprised at the variety of stuff he'd cooked up, and at the rate we're going we'll have a full-length recorded in the next month or two...woohoo!

I've also been recording some new stuff at home with drums and loops and bass guitar and keyboards and voice, building up some material for a trio I've been putting together.

And then there's the acoustic guitar + singing stuff. And the improv keys/drums/tenor sax trio. But I think that's it for now.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i also bought another new guitar.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate - that tracks really good - can I remix it?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

mini-tour. working on remixes
for Ladybug and a hardcore band called
Paint It Black. 2 new songs of my own that
i'll overthink within the week.

dz, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Recording.....not as enjoyable as playing live....

Question: If you're in a band that emphasizes improv, what do you do to avoid the trappings of losing that feel while multi-tracking, yet still sound good and getting what you want???

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My band has been practicing a couple of times a week, has a gig on Thursday night. In our first sessions, recording the drums in the garage didn't turn out as well as hoped. Everything else sounds pretty good, so we are going into a studio to cut the basic tracks live and finish it on our own.

Nick, when are Th3 M4nn3qu1ns going to play a show? Hugo is pretty tightlipped about the whole affair.

earlnash, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Have just recorded some amazing improvisations with two terrific players in Brooklyn; the recordings are now in the hands of a wonderful laptopper to be edited and re-composed. All the musicians involved are name-droppable, but since every time I drop names my projects fall apart, I ain't saying. There's a lot of work to be done on this project still, another musician I still want to get involved who hasn't confirmed yet, and everybody involved is as busy as they are enthusiastic, so expect nothing before late Spring 2004 at the earliest.

Hated anthology -- one step forward, two steps back. Now that the mixes are done, some members of the band are advocating cutting some of our best and best-known songs from the package due to musical and moral discomfort with what we sang and played at the time. (A necessary byproduct of what Dan calls our "Man on the Mountain/Boy in the Basement" lyrical stance.) Friendly battle has been engaged and I am hopeful that the cuts won't happen and everyone will be ok with that, but that'll take time and delicate negotiation. I think that Spring 2004 is realistic for a release date, and we may do something special to mark the occasion.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cloud Minders, my band, or rather a duo now since we've lost our rhythm section two years ago and can't be bothered to replace them, are working on a cover version of "Trouble" by the Jayhawks, recorded on two PCs using Samplitude. It's going to be on an ONS cover versions CD due early next year. We'll also be cleaning up some old songs of ours for a single in the new year too.

My solo project Honeybourne are also contributing a cover for the ONS CD - a version of "Living by numbers" which is rather groovy. Since my wife wiped some of my recordings for my album earlier this year, I'm having to work from scratch, reworking some old songs and writing some new ones again, but it's a bloody slow process with not enough time to do everything I want to do. It's either guitar stuff with beats, or all electronic with Fruity Loops, any VSTs I can handle and my old Juno 6 and CZ101. Still, my sunburst Jagmaster is finally repaired after two years out of action, which is nice. Paul, the other Cloud Minder, is in the process of turning 3 C90 of old recordings of mine into 4 CDs, which should be good fun to listen to.

Oh, and still practicing in church every Wednesday and playing every Sunday, either guitar or bass depending on what everyone thinks sounds best.

Rob M (Rob M), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

earlnash - actually I think our first show is gonna be at the Student Center on Halloween! That'll be fun.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Love the tracks Jez,brilliant stuff.'Gulab'is such a tuuuune!

Paul R (paul R), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to start a baroque pop band with my keyboardist/violinist boyfriend, but since we don't have a harpsichord or any other musicians, eh...

If anyone in the Chicago area is interested, though, let me know.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

My band (The Id) finally finished getting our 2nd EP together. It's called the Quadraped EP and it has four songs on it. It's supposed to have 4 different covers, one by each band member, but as usual, I'm the only one who's gotten my shit together so far. So right now it only has one cover. It's pretty hot.

Sarah and I are recording an album under the name the Petrified Forest. We each recorded some drum tracks, and it works like this: one of us will add parts to a song until we get bored of it, then the other one takes over and adds some stuff. It's a mix of really poppy rock music with some more sinister weird stuff. It should be awesome when we're done, we've got 10 songs so far.

Sarah, me and my girlfriend Sarah should be in Chicago by January and we'll be looking for new musical projects. Email me more about what you guys want to do if yr interested. My email address is backwards.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

peepee -- don't multitrack.

Besides playing in Mama Digdown's Brass Band, I'm getting a new trio going that I'm really excited about. It's guitar, upright bass and drums, and until we have enough original material we're doing some stuff by the Bad Plus, Tortoise, Radiohead, Masada, and some modern classical guitar stuff adapted for trio improv.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers Paul!

I've just mailed re that CD I promised months back...

Jez (Jez), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Slowly trying to start a band again. Debating whether or not to give more copies of my 4-track recordings to people or not. I'm fairly satisfied with 'em, but they're sadder than the stuff I'd like to be doing now.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"i can't find a band in bloomington"

Hang out in front of TDsCDs&LPs for about a half an hour and you will probably run into a half dozen people putting up flyers in the cubbyhole of the entrance.

earlnash, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Recording a band tentatively known as The Big Wheels. Trying to keep the momentum going there since we record only once a week or so (they rehearse twice a week) and they elected me producer, so this is my first production work outside of my own music.

Have written some things I'm not to happy with in the last few weeks. Seems I was too interested in doing stuff that sounded like "this or that style" (my attempt at an italo disco track nearly made me smash my instruments this past weekend! Awful. Lifeless.) as opposed to just working and letting something come up on its own - which is how my best things have been made. So I'm in a state of reassessment, so to speak .

Is "reassessment" a word?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Trying to cheaply master and then drum up interest in the stuff by my two bands, W/O and Affection, both of which will be playing at a place called (I think) Lenny's in Hotlanta on Oct. 10 if anyone's around those parts.

And trying to make funky/electro/disco noise on the 4track and make it not sound like a 4track. it's fun!

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The Canasta EP is almost done -- half the tracks are mixed so far. We're hoping to do a record release around Thanksgiving. The big news, however, is that we got an opening slot at the Metro on October 9. Interested Chicagoans can click here for a free ticket to this show. It promises to be very fun. Sarah P, you might like us: we're a six-piece indie/chamber-pop outfit with keyboard, violin, piano, and guitar.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm also excited because my friend Jason just moved to Chicago and wants to start an intense, melodic post-rock band a la GYBE!, which is completely different from Canasta but much more the kind of music I'd like to make.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Hang out in front of TDsCDs&LPs for about a half an hour and you will probably run into a half dozen people putting up flyers in the cubbyhole of the entrance.

Where the hell IS TDsCDs&LPs?? I've been in the neighborhood where it's supposed to be, but there are no outside signs or anything, as far as I can tell. Also, earlnash, does your band gig in B-town?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

in a band i'm in with my dad (spacy, poppy folk) we're about to finish mixing the last song and finish up the artwork, so we should have a CD out soon (of course we're not on any label right now, but i might start one just to release this CD) it should be called "Tragedy at Dog Pound Road" by Audry's Old Bed. we've also been playing shows at the Neutral Ground, a local coffee house semi-regularly.
i'm about halfway through an EP i'm making tentatively under the name Exploding Cochleas. its really noisy, industrialish electronic music. i'll probably shop it to DHR records if the rest of it goes as well as it's started out
due to ridiculously conflicting schedules, my band the Digital Whales, is on hiatus right now. not too worried though, we've been together for 4 years and we're planning on devoting our lives to this band upon graduation from college.
i've also just begun recording a shitload of my vinyl onto my hard drive for sampling purposes in a project named "Poetry in Motion" which is basically gonna be Shakespeare in hip-hop form. i was just gonna do sonnets, but i found this kickass performance of Hamlet on vinyl the other day, so i might make a hip-hop opera out of it, at least, if it picks up some steam.

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Where the hell IS TDsCDs&LPs??"

It is in the basement of a big old house on Kirkwood that has been converted into stores, right across the street from the Monroe Public Libary. This house has "The Laughing Planet" burrito shop and a coffee house inside. If you go to the basement of the coffee house, you can walk into TD's or you can enter from the back of the building, where the cubbyhole I mentioned is located, along with a blue dozen flyers for band people looking for band people.

I went to school at IU and played in a few different bands in B-ton from 89 to 95. I haven't played a gig up there with my new band, but am going to work on a booking up there sometime.

If you are into indie/punk/whatever and are underage, a good way to meet people to play music is to volunteer at the all ages club Rhinos or at WIUS, the small watt AM station on campus.

earlnash, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying to figure out the future of my country-rock band, the Scrimsh@nders. I have a new, less country, self-recorded disc 80% done & can't find the time to finish the vocals and mix the damn thing. It could be pretty damn good when it's done, although I think the songs are uneven. Our first disc did really well & people are clamoring for more, but it isn't motivating me for some reason.

Part of why I have no time is that I've been scoring a friend's video game as my first electronic/computer/sampler-based project. I've generally operated in the guitar-bass-drums-vocals world all my life. What a challenge: to learn the technology, and to come up with short loops that are motivating yet unobtrusive.

My handle, southern lights, will be the name of my next project when I get around to it. I hereby claim rights to the name. Or maybe somebody else has. That project will probably be solo and computer-based, but will hopefully sound organic.

southern lights (southern lights), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

King Kobra, what kinda band are you looking to start?

JasonD (JasonD), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't contributed to this before, and I never really post on ILM, but I'm so bored...

Got a little project with a virtuoso drummer doing a hella/don caballero style thing, where I play classical style guitar on electic. He drums like Zach Hill (he's a god!). We do sound a *lot* like Hella, and we admitt it, but its fun! Although he lives far away and we rarely get to meet up, but its a good technical exercise when we do write/jam, starting to gig around christmas hopefully.

My 'proper' band, kind of mathy/rocky pretty music with occasional vocals is doing well. We have been given a little fully soundproofed studio on a farm which is the most amazing thing ever! We're all 17/18 with too much time, no bills and money from working all summer. So we've writing and recording for the last year or so in our nice new studio.

I'm sure some of you will be able to relate to this, we keep improving too fast, hearning new things, getting new ideas - this seems to happen in 2 song steps. After 2 songs we'll jump to a new level and the older songs become obselete - annoying when you want to get gigging and a coherent cd finished!!

Also trying to do a 2manyDjs style thing on my own with traktor and some old record decks - but, hmm, no, it'll never work.

Anyway, that was fun!

TomB (TomB), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My band the Shimmer Kids Underpop Association released a new 30-minute 6-song EP about a month ago (http://www.underpop.org), we're in the process of recruiting/breaking in a new drummer, and we're just about finished with a new 10-song full-length album that will probably come out in January, god willing. Not sure where it will come out, if we can't get any labels interested in it we'll just do it up ourselves and sell them through our distributor.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

insane track dleone. time to stop reviewing.

(Jon L), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Attempting to sort out recording two or three tracks for compilations and still completely unable to write a chorus.

Ben Dot, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-but choruses are the easy part!!

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I listened to the first song Kate, sounds good. No backbeat, it's a revolution! Are those programmed drums? It's hard to tell on my crappy work headphones.

I'm mainly working on the Cleft and Cloven project (which is turning into lots of hot beats, odd-time signatures, polyrhythms, and an even split of programming and live stuff). Right now we're basically trying to achieve self-sufficiency with the home studio, but one of my friends from the Youngblood Brass Band is doing his horn tracks this week for a tune.

Besides that, I've been doing brass band gigs as usual but have basically stopped doing jazz gigs on drumset for the meantime, just not feeling it right now.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, I'll come see your band in Madison! That's a cool club.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Awesome, you've only got to wait three months! We're trying to get a Milwaukee show set up for the same weekend so we can do a little weekend tour.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Looking for a drummer, in fact. "The second drummer drowned." In fact, our first one had a shoulder injury and his successor is leaving to go on tour with Mercury Rev, an offer I, sadly, can't match.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

ah i'd forgotten about this thread. our second album is all mixed and waiting to be mastered. maybe some nice record company will want to put it out, who's to say? it's the best album to come out of melbourne since the second underground lovers LP, natch.

purple patch (electricsound), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Two things: 6 tracks into an 8 track album of weird heavy rhythm stuff with glossolalia vocals (misleadingly I have called it 'black metal electro' in my own head, but it ain't really that)for a USA goth label. Also 6 songs into a 12 song album for my other electronic rock group project thing. Talking to a coupla labels about that one now. The halfway point. I still love writing albums, buit I will move with the times I spose.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Currently working on a deep house mix for my singer-songwriter friend who was curious to hear her voice on "a dancey groove", and I have a feeling this one could actually make some noise for both of us...

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, the female singer in your band is great - is that you? Was the phasing on "Come Closer" your idea? It's a nice touch. "Come Closer" is my favourite of the three songs, I think.

Will put up new recordings very soon. These are shorter and actually have pro performers and recording quality. Er, I got accepted/invited to perform at the Society of American Music conference next year. Am hoping to be able to do some teaching and playing gigs in the new school year while I try to finally get my thesis done. Which means I should probably get my ass off here and do something productive now.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Sundar, it's not actually me. I'm doing some backing harmonies, but not the leads. (Weird because my ex boyfriend made the same mistake.) She's a *much* better singer than I am, really professional, tone and levels so even. A lot of the phasing is due to double and triple tracking - natural chorus and phase due to her impeccable delivery. I'm so happy with the way Ruth's vocals turned out, can you tell?

I think AOL is my fave of the three, the way that the harmonies build and peak on the "Warm... but alone" line.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

been working on some songs, as i've had a real creative streak lately.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

We're just back from playing dates in Hereford and Worcester. The West Country tour! We're on a couple of dates of the Nightingales tour - Oct 1 in Shrewsbury is next. Also gigs in Brighton (again) and London (the good old Bull and Gate) coming up. Also a Radio Session at some point soon. We're building up a fair bit of support wherever we go, getting asked to play more gigs than we can deal with, given none of us do this full-time.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

We should have a thread where everyone on ILM discloses what bands they're in.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Lots of shows coming up for my band Capitol Cities, about to finish our full-length debut recorded at Ghetto Recorders in Detroit and produced by Jim Diamond, lots of new songs, anyone who saw our UK tour last winter please be advised that we didn't have our real drummer with us and we don't really sound so crap in real life.

Pretty much!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

They're up. The new pieces are "Mystery Story" (about 2:26, performed by sax genius David Mott) and parts 1-3 of 8 of "The Travelling Trio" (Christina Petrowska-Quilico on piano, Julian Knight on viola, William Beauvais on classical guitar). These are pieces that incorporate elements of improv into the compositions, using colourful graphics as part of the scores.

recently released and sold out my very first release, a solo recording under the name 'a million lights' i put out as a lathe-cut 8" ep edition of (just) 20 copies, called 'side one'.

need to do some more recording.. meanwhile my band is supporting chris knox on the 10th of september, here in christchurch )as part of the hep c. benefit gig at the media club).

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Finished the second Super Madrigal Brothers album and we're tidying up the cover art for it now. It should be out on Feverpitch this fall, hopefully..

It's very cartoonish and absurd, and we do a bit of the "Carmen" opera by Bizet. So I think people will really like it.

Aside from that, I've been doing the odd thing here and there. Recording fake breakdance music, pulling together samples from experiments with my television, etc. You can create the most insane electronic wave loops using a TV and a videocamera.

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Fun track. Has someone been listening to Closer?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 3 September 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Not really - but my on/off drummer has literally written a book on Unknown Pleasures.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 3 September 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I know I already linked to the Fake Fictions upthread, but since then we added a new recording to the website, of a song that we're probably going to abandon but wanted to record first so that it wouldn't disappear into the ether.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
Just finished an album. We only need to sell 70 copies to break even -and even that is a minor challenge these days (in Australia for indie acts). A decade ago, 600 sales wasn't too hard - and that was the break even point.

moley (moley), Saturday, 5 March 2005 07:12 (twenty years ago)

dronezzzzzzzzzz

greg ginn thought neubauten was bullshit, why don't you? (smile), Saturday, 5 March 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

too many remixes, too many shows = not enough time to work on the album that is in my head

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Saturday, 5 March 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

urgh I hate it when that happens.

moley (moley), Saturday, 5 March 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

OK. So fire away then ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Finished an EP (which, naturally, in reality means "halfway into an album and broke"). Pretty excited about playing the Brooklyn Lyceum on March 26. It's an amazing space, anyone been?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah the Lyceum rules. big, open space. used to be a bath house? risers in the back so you play on the floor.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Saturday, 5 March 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

just finished a large batch of tracks, and am now sitting on them!

latebloomer: Klicken für Details (latebloomer), Saturday, 5 March 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Let's see now...

* Hot-rodded my G4 with a faster CPU chip, which will keep me going for another year.

* Wrapped a track for 18-Year-Old R'n'B Diva. It's my first successful attempt at writing and programming a song in that vein. The lyrics are pure Cheez Whiz, but then again, that's kinda the point.

* Euro-Trance Girl #1's album is done. Now if I can just convince her to get the tracks professionally mastered instead of getting This Guy She Knows to do it. Sigh...

* Finishing a song for my singer-songwriter friend. It's a big, Coldplay-style rock ballad.
I'm sorry.

* One song left to mix for Euro-Trance Girl #2, then...

* I pull out my Daft / Modjo / Jaxx filter disco house whatchamacallit out of mothballs so I can remix it to club length. My DJ friend (who actually has, like, real house music label contacts and yargleblargle), has been bugging me for a full-length version for months.

* The studio moves to a larger suite in April, so I'm pushing my partners for a new mixing console. I'll be paying for a large chunk of it, so I don't think I'll have a problem convincing them to do it.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 5 March 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Canasta has been playing around Chicago pretty regularly -- just had a show last night at the Empty Bottle, and we'll be opening up for the Kaiser Chiefs at the Double Door on March 24.

Next weekend we go on our first mini-tour, hitting Indianapolis, Louisville, and Nashville. And the weekend after that we play SXSW in Austin.

In late April we finally go into the studio to record our first full-length, which we hope to have mixed and mastered in time for a late June release.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 5 March 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

x-post
Used to be a bath house? AWESOME. will work into stage banter.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 5 March 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Cool stuff, Tantrum. Sounds exciting.

I'm playing a recital of modern classical guitar music on the 18th at York.

I defended my composition thesis a month ago and have been accepted to do my Ph. D. at SUNY Buffalo starting September.

I was in Eugene a couple weeks ago to play a prepared electric guitar improv piece (sort of a skewed tribute to Hendrix) at the Society of American Music conference. Everything was great except for the attendance.

I was accepted to the Young Composers' Workshops for the Arraymusic and Madwaska String Quartet ensembles, which I'll be working on this spring and summer.

I'm still taking Karnatak voice lessons, the first time I've tried any type of singing lessons. It's a slow and painful process but I think I'm becoming more tolerable.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 5 March 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Nice, Sundar.

The Cleft & Cloven record is about 75% done. Each song that gets finished is definitely better than the one before, and hopefully we'll be totally finished by mid '05. I'm not sure what will happen then. (oh, in about a week there will be a website re-launch with some new mp3s)

Mama Digdown's Brass Band has been playing a lot, the Green Mill gigs in Chicago went pretty well. We've got a week of gigs in Switzerland coming up in a couple months. Preparations for the next cd are very slow however.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 6 March 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

how many songs so far jim?

still the same 14. finding the time to organise the remix to be finished is proving to be headachey, coupled with the fact that nearly three years after starting to record, i don't particularly like this album anymore..

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Sunday, 6 March 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Sundar,

Congrats! I am sometimes regretful that I don't have more formal musical training. I did Royal Conservatory for piano, but only got to Grade Six, and there are days when I could really use more knowledge of theory.
