the title of NYPLM comes from, i presume, that song 'pop music' ('new york, london, paris munich, everyones talkin bout, pop music') that i found in a charity shop one day. is this right. if so, whats the story behind the tune? whos it by?

on the back it has some credit to the 'ginger prince'. what were those people that had a show on radio 1, one of whom was also called the 'ginger prince'. are they related? am i imagining all of this?

http://archive.awrc.com/m/pop_muzik.html should help you with some of yr questions. FYI, "Pop Muzik" placed second in the Village Voice's 1979 Pazz & Jop Critics' Poll's singles list.

Pop Muzik = 3rd 7" I ever purchased, at a thrift store, based solely on title. Music itself was a delightful surprise. First single being "Crash" by The Primitives and second being "Crimson and Clover" by Tommy James and the Shondelles.

Yes, the people that did Radio Tip Top on Radio 1 did a version of it too. The original's M, as you should know. It is on 90% of jukeboxes on a Best Of The 80s compilation.

Pop Muzik was a single by a Brit named Robin Scott under the name M.

He actually had a lot of ties in the inner circles of London punk in the mid and late 70's. Was good friends with Malcolm McLaren since the late 60's.

He actually comes up quite a bit in Englands Dreaming by Jon Savage.

four years pass...
This appears to be the only Robin Scott/M thread -- understandable enough -- so I'll just post to say that his solo debut from 1969, Woman From the Warm Grass, got reissued recently. Very much not a proto-electronics artifact! But it's a pleasant enough light folk/rock album with some good songs, and Scott's liner notes are good fun. From debut to fame in terms of time, he almost beats out Pulp!

Pop Muzik is one of my fave songs ever.
I remember when he was on top of the pops with a suit made of 7" singles. And then in 1989 he was on again when the remix charted and he wore the suit made of cd singles.
