Listening to a mixtape sent by a b uddy i am amazed by the astounding vocal talents of female country singers. So from Mother Maybelle Carter to Neko Case what do yall reckon ?

For some reason I am thinking this is something I need to be more learned about, especially going further back. (And ESPECIALLY because I had to listen to two chucklehead's conversation today in the rekkid store on the "authenticity" of Will Oldham. Shiver.)

Dolly! Come on, how many other singers could have a song massacred by Whitney Houston. Even the disco crap is great. (Not that 'disco' = 'crap', of course. I should've used the term 'Urban Cowboy music' - hey, it's 'countrypolitan', right?) Anyway her early stuff is indisputably great. I like Mary Ford too.

Patsy Cline. Duh. Oh, and Will Oldham has oodles of authenticity, which is precisely the rub.

You can't lose with Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Kitty Wells & Wanda Jackson.

anthony, get yr queer little butt over to audiogalaxy or whatever file sharer you use and listen to some Kasey Chambers - this woman is going to be huge - one of her claims to fame is making lucinda williams cry. Other recommendations include the ever-present Emmylou, Dolly (of course), handsome famiily, lambchop and ryan adams.

Geoff, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lambchop and the Handsome Family have male singers, of course. Fritz's recommendations are right on the money; if you haven't heard Wanda Jackson, she'll really knock your socks off.

Tanya Tucker was a teenage goth country queen. "Would You Lay With Me in a Field of Stone" is incredible, all her early hits are, really .

gillian welch. emmylou harris. and lots of other people who ain't on the 'o brother' soundtrack. laura cantrell is dead-on. neko case's side project with carolyn mark, the corn sisters, is as much fun live as anyone else i've seen. kelly willis.

everyone mentioned above is pretty ace, too.

Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerard

And I quite like Shelby Lynne but it might just be those hip-huggers she wears.

Mary Kay Place as Loretta Hagers-"Baby Boy" and "Vitamin L". Oh how I wish I still had her Live at the Capri Lounge album . I believe Emmylou and Dolly are featured on the record.

Also, Roseanne Cash-"Seven Year Ache", the Judds-"Why Not Me".

Molly O'Day -- she recorded in the 40s and 50s. Sorta like a female version of Roy Acuff. Pretty much everything I've heard of hers is good, and the very best -- "Teardrops Falling in the Snow," "Tramp on the Street," "The Drunken Driver," and "Don't Sell Daddy Any More Whiskey" (with crying baby in background) is spinetingling.

nine years pass...

Six mentions of Hazel Dickens on I Love Music (now seven) and two of them (now three) are from me.

RIP Hazel Dickens.

A telling confusion over at Chez Times about whether HD was a "folk singer" or a "bluegrass singer". (Of course she was much more than either.)
