Flim: electronic songs with pretty melodies

So, I've got this band, and I'm looking for some tunes to fill out the set that fit in with what we're doing. I would love some suggestions of some songs, preferably idm-y/drum n' bass-y, with strong melodies a la Aphex 'Flim', Telefon Tel Aviv, Cinematic Orchestra, etc.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Theme from "Midnight Express" by Giorgio Moroder.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"Journey to Reedham" by Squarepusher off "Big Loada." Catchy as hell.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Asteroids Over Berlin" or "La Silence Du Temps" by Bochum Welt.

d.w., Wednesday, 1 October 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Boards of Canada, "Roygbiv"

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

machine drum - "jewlea"
proswell - "oeo"
ilkae - "lis tail"
chris clark - "proper lo-fi"
global goon - "bassy hip-hop"

and it might be too house-y but "saturday and sunday" by kaito

Capitol K - "Pillow"

Nick H, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Kyoji - "Vision" (I think it's available on mp3.com)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Silk Road" by Kitato and "Souvenir Of China" by Jean Michel Jarre may be a bit kitch to some, but they are definitely beautiful melodies.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

mu-ziq - slice
something by mum

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the suggestions. I did always want to do Cichli, that song is a motherfucker to play though. A friend who figured out says that though the beat is in 5/4 the melody works in 3 beat cells that switch around...maybe I'll just listen to the record instead. :>

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

jega - manic miner
insanely catchy tune made from bits of zx spectrum loading tape.

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

btw just heard "flim" last week as a 15 sec. segue on npr done by a piano-drums duo. made me smile [one of my favorite aphex tracks] but the drummer was wooden.

mig, Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It was The Bad Plus. And he wasn't.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

How's that album, Jordan? I thought about buying it the other day.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i love it. they're much better live though (and their original material is better than their covers

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Cex - Get in Yr Squads

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Felcher OTM, but yeah, it's fantastic. I think what sets them apart from other jazz groups is that they're not afraid to acknowledge their awareness of contemporary culture, and that they've found a way to use their rock and pop influences without comprising either side of the equation or becoming a fusion band.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i.s.a.n - the gentle man

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 3 October 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of µ-ziq tracks obviously fit this category. "Lunatic Harness" is probably the most melodic of his LP's, but you can't go wrong with the others either. Also...

Global Goon: "After Life"
Mouse on Mars: "Diskdusk", "Juju"
Ultramarine: "Stella"
Hardsequencer: "Plastic Fantastic"
T Power: "Trapezium"
DJ Tom & Norman: "Bass for Love"
Cosmic Baby: "Loops of Infinity"
Banco de Gaia: "Last Train to Lhasa"
Loop Guru: "Tamduugi"
The Black Dog: "Chesh"
Jonzun Crew: "Electro Boogie Encounter"
Yello: "Stella"
Nobukazu Takemura: "Icefall"
Derrick May: "R-Theme"
Orbital: "The Girl with the Sun in Her Head"
LFO: "Slow Down Speedy"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 3 October 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You should get an operatic singer in and do Belfast by Orbital and Rakimou by Plaid. Also, Aphex's Alberto Balsam is ideal for a full band.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 3 October 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

There already is a vocal version of "Belfast", it's called "Wasted". It isn't done by a opera singer, but it sounds nice anyway. Some other tracks I forgot...

Alter Ego: "Sentimental Books", "Microshopping"
Two Lone Swordsmen: "Sticky", "Solo Strike"
Link: "Avatar"
William Orbit: "A Touch of the Night"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 3 October 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Plaid: Assault On Precinct Zero
Autofire: Litter Duty
Autechre: garbagemx36
Chris Clark: Holiday As Brutality (?)
Squarepusher: Iambic 5 Poetry

dog latin, Friday, 3 October 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

'Shackbu' by Plaid.

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 4 October 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I love this song so much. How come almost noone knows about it? It's practically impossible to find a good quality mo3 of it.
