I've heard great things about this guy, can anyone recommend anything by him to buy or download?

God's fairly essential but his posse's spin-offs are pretty wack.

I've only heard the track on the Isolationism comp, but it didn't make too much of an impression on me.

Ned to thread...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 23:59 (twenty years ago) link

Oh wait, shit .. they weren't on Isolationism, I just checked. I know I have them on one of those Virgin comps. Macro Dub Infection maybe?

"My Pal"

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 2 October 2003 01:07 (twenty years ago) link

God really hit a peak with Jesus, and "Muhammed" had a HUGE motherf*cking hook, but Joseph Smith was a pretty obvious publicity stunt.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 2 October 2003 01:31 (twenty years ago) link

God's great, but his followers are thick and ordinary.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 2 October 2003 01:54 (twenty years ago) link

God is awesome because his son died for your sins.

And when you tack "... and now he's giving away millions in prizes!" on the end of that, and wear it on a sandwich board, while ranting at all the passers-by outside the club your show is in, to pretend you're protesting it's blasphemy, as a publicity stunt... you REALLY piss off his followers. And that's the most fun thing in the world.

sucka (sucka), Thursday, 2 October 2003 02:15 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know, Anthony, some of those posse records are pretty great. There's a King David cover by the Melodians that's completely amazing, too.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 2 October 2003 02:16 (twenty years ago) link

I can't stand his fans.

Prude (Prude), Thursday, 2 October 2003 02:22 (twenty years ago) link

Shit that inspired a lot more shit.

Clapton was rubbish.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 2 October 2003 07:27 (twenty years ago) link

I don't want to start any blashpemous rumours, but I think that God's got a sick sense of humour. And when I die, I expect to find him laughing......

I still listen to Possession fairly often.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 2 October 2003 10:53 (twenty years ago) link

Is any God's stuff in print (ahh, what a beautiful question)

Someone sent me an MP3 of God at some point (the Broadrick band, that is) and it seemed quite neat. Would fit nicely next to the likes of Fudge Tunnel and Godflesh.

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Thursday, 2 October 2003 11:02 (twenty years ago) link

_Possession_ is FUCKING MASSIVE. "Fucked" is one of the best songs ever recorded.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 October 2003 14:08 (twenty years ago) link

i wish i still had _consumed_. but _possession_ is great, they really didn't do any bad stuff that i've heard. though they started moving a little closer towards godflesh than was strictly necessary.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:09 (twenty years ago) link

what about GODDO?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:16 (twenty years ago) link

Surface Noise is bang on the money, My Pal was one of the great lost singles of the 80s.

Officer Pupp, Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:38 (twenty years ago) link

Shit, this is what happens when you post a question and then forget to check the thread. I'd just like to clarify that the band "God" isn't what I was referring to...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 3 October 2003 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

two years pass...
Heh, I was hoping you meant the actual 'entity' god...

I can say one good thing: He brings people together.

however, the fact that they are often together to kill each other kinda defeats the point somewhat...

'my pal' by god (the australian one) is one of the most classic rock songs in existence.

i'm in heaven
trying to figure out which stack
they're going to stuff us atheists into
when Peter and his monkey laugh

and i laugh with them
i'm not sure what at

they point and say
we'll keep you in the back
polishing halos, baking manna and gas

well some guy comes in looking a bit like everyone i ever seen
he moves just like crisco disco
breath 100% listerine
he says looking at something else
but directing everything to me
every time anyone gets on their knees to pray
well it makes my telephone ring
and i'll be damned
he said you were right...

he had a theory too

he said that god takes care of himself
god takes care of himself
and you of you

The one thing God and Elvis Costello have in common is they both put out so much material that you have to like at least some of it. I think God peaked with Homo sapiens and Elvis with This Year's Model, though many would disagree. I'll be the first to admit H. sapiens are a mixed bag: on the one hand, God really knocked it out of the park with genitals, but on the other -- wisdom teeth? What the fuck were you thinking, dude?

When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,

what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?

Here to seventh the nomination of "My Pal" as one of the greatest Aussie rock/pop singles that almost no one's ever heard (in America, anyway). "Rockin' Marky" on the flip is pretty ace too, if only for the countoff of the members of KISS:

Gene Simmons!
Paul Stanley!
Ace Frehley!
Peeta CHRIS!

...KISS!
