I never got into them, but for some reason, I'm sort of interested in doing so now. What's worth checking out? What isn't?

Josh Timmermann (Josh Timmermann), Friday, 3 October 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

search the first album because it contains "hate my way" and "delicate cutters" which are phenomenal tracks.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 3 October 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

also search 'hips and makers' and 'real ramona'.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 3 October 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Kristin Hersh (solo) - C/D, S/D, OPO, RFD, &c.

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 3 October 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Sunny Border Blue, esp. "Your Dirty Answer" ("it's not my fault you don't love me/ when I'm drunk"), "37 Hours," "Candyland"

D: Hunkpapa is pretty lame (and Hersh seems to be the first to admit this).

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 3 October 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Red Heaven is constantly overlooked for no valid reason. Hmph!

johnny fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 October 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

if they'd delete that bob mould song it would be heaven.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 3 October 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

What? That's, like, the second best track on the entire record.

johnny fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 October 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

SEARCH: "Fish" on Lonely Is an Eyesore, "Not Too Soon"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 October 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Another vote for The Real Ramona.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Friday, 3 October 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Debut (particularly Hate My Way), House Tornado, Real Ramona.

Jamie Conway (Jamie Conway), Friday, 3 October 2003 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The re-release of the first LP called In A Doghouse gives you lots of extras, including the Chains Changed EP, so that would be the best place to start. And I'll add votes for Real Ramona and Sunny Border Blue for the later disks.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 3 October 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

In approximate order (not counting EPs, reissues, and The Curse):

1. Hips and Makers
2. The Real Ramona
3. Sunny Border Blue
4. University
5. Red Heaven
6. Throwing Muses (2003)
7. Throwing Muses (1986)
8. Sky Motel
9. Limbo
10. Strange Angels
11. Murder, Misery and then Goodnight
12. The Grotto
13. House Tornado
14. Hunkpapa

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 3 October 2003 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't "dizzy" on hunkpapa? how can it be that bad?

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 3 October 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

ive been listening to the muses a lot lately, superb band in my opinion. i like house tornado a lot, but its probably not the easiest place to start cos its pretty dark (although it is available at mid price in the UK, with the also excellent fat skier ep on the same disk). go for "in the doghouse" or the "real ramona" first i'd say.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Friday, 3 October 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I just can't stand the production on House Tornado and Hunkpapa. Curse you, shitty late-80s production values! But beyond that I feel there's a lot of aimlessness in those mid-career albums.

Anyway, like I said, approximate. Also, I'm drunk.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 3 October 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

search--"run letter"

seanp (seanp), Friday, 3 October 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Destroy the new S/T (2003). I had high hopes when I read that Tanya Donelly was back in the band, but it was messy, underproduced, and nothing like a return to form.

BrianB, Friday, 3 October 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I freely admit that whilst I see that they were a breath of fresh air when they appeared around 85/6, I never really *got* them. The stuff that made them stand out musically like time changes and unexpected twists and turns just kind of irritates me. I'm always waiting for them to hit a groove. When they do, they're ace - Bright Yellow Gun, most of the Real Ramona etc. I don't mind the first album either. Or Red Heaven.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Dr's spot on here. When I first heard them, I was sort've intrigued by the fact that they eluded a conventional groove, flirting with it, but never succumbing (most evident on the first track I'd ever heard by them, the afore-mentioned "Fish" on the 4AD compilation, Lonely Is an Eyesore. Their later stuff was more accessible.

Anyone ever hear Kristen Hersh's cover of "When the Levee Breaks" (available on the Strings e.p.)? Its surprisingly not as embarassing as you'd imagine, though she doesn't really have the voice to handle the song's inherent histrionics.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

'Hunkpapa' was Hersh's attempt to strip down the sound and make it accessible. And it was the first one I liked! Even though it's definitely not their strongest record, it was the open door in for me when it came out. After this record, slowly the earlier records began to make sense, whereas before they were too dense, spikey, insular, they just weren't sinking in.

Now they are one of my favorite rock bands, ever: once they sink in, they're a very unique place to be. Few records can come close to the first 1986 album, it's an entire world. Can't even talk about it. The 'Chains Changed' ep close behind. Both of these are on 'In A Doghouse'.

'Real Ramona' is as immediately accessible as 'Hunkpapa', and a better record overall, so it'll probably serve the same introductory purpose if you want to warm up.

The later ones are not the best introduction. 'Red Heaven', 'University', 'Limbo', good but more crafted than immediate. I like their 2003 self-titled album, I don't mind the stripped down non-production because the songwriting is fierce and angular again.

But it's really all about the first record. Once you're into that one, you'll want the others.

(Jon L), Friday, 3 October 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

oh no the new album is a burst of energy, exceptional, one of the best albums of the year. admittedly it is not as hooky as the earlier stuff but the charms of the songs are revealed when listened to loudly

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 3 October 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I think University is underrated. And I see it in used bins frequently.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 3 October 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I've tried to get into Throwing Muses before, but never liked any of their records beyond a few tracks. I get real bored with everything on The Real Ramona except for Tanya Donelly's two songs.

I LOVE Kristin Hersh's Strange Angels album, though. Everything on it is real tuneful and pretty, which are two qualities that, in my opinion, Ms. Hersh seems to be trying to avoid on most of the Muses records.

Hildy, Friday, 3 October 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

six years pass...

"Fish" just came up on a genius mix the other day, still amazing.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 17 May 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

there's a spine-tingling video for it on the Doghouse CD, the whole band is like 17 and they look like they're in a trance.

bug holocaust (sleeve), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 01:54 (fifteen years ago)

I am far from a completist, but I will say that Limbo is my favorite Hersh work that I've heard.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 03:19 (fifteen years ago)

Uh!? Limbo is one o'the 2 Muses (the other's Hunkpapa/ Fat Skier) that I got on CD recently. Together with La Kristin's Grotto and Learn To Sing Like A Star. O man, I love them all.

t**t, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:11 (fifteen years ago)

ARGH! 'Tis House Tornado/ Fat skier of course.
(And suddenly my love of Muse(s) seems less convincing eh?)

^this is a book with an album inside apparently, so she is basically issuing two books at the same time

she is mottled and she's looking good (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 08:50 (fifteen years ago)

I only know her from early Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave, who are just one of my favorite bands. Doing Nirvana better than Nirvana did. Almost like prog-grunge or something.
l think I'm going to take this revive as an excuse to delve into her solo material.

ljagljana (kkvgz), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 10:19 (fifteen years ago)

the whole band is like 17 and they look like they're in a trance.

This is EXACTLY my memory of my first time seeing them. Kristin was so scarily possessed I thought her head might do a 360 ala Linda Blair in "The Exorcist." I've never seen this video, but I'm going to go look for it and old performance clips on Youtube.

I turn it up when I hear the banjo (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 14:10 (fifteen years ago)

Saw them many times when they were just starting out and "in a trance" is an apt description. Kristin in particular often looked possessed.

Jazzbo, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

!wow! I'm looking forward to reading her memoir!

Very jealous of anyone who saw them early on. That first album is relentless. Man, David Narcizo was a phenomenal drummer.

seven years pass...

Over the years I've watched my appreciation for'em grow.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 October 2017 02:37 (eight years ago)

Have you heard Belly's 2002 comp Sweet Ride? A couple of great b-sides on there ("Spaceman," "Broken") that I'd definitely count among Donelly's best.

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Thursday, 19 October 2017 03:14 (eight years ago)

Solid top five, for sure. But I think you may be confusing Prince with Hersh on the Vicki entry ;)

Michael Jones, Thursday, 19 October 2017 12:46 (eight years ago)

What is the best post-Belly Tanya D album? I kinda gave up after King.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Thursday, 19 October 2017 14:45 (eight years ago)

first or last, lovesongs and/or the swan song EPs

sick, fucking funny, and well tasty (katherine), Thursday, 19 October 2017 14:50 (eight years ago)

also I posted this elsewhere but my top 20, which was excruciating to cut down to 20:

"Call Me"
"Soul Soldier"
"Fish"
"Hook in Her Head"
"Pearl"
"Tuesday Night"
"Listerine"
"Bright Yellow Gun"
"Civil Disobedience"
"Around Dusk"
"Krait"
"Morning Birds" (both parts, as one song)
"Flooding" (piano demo)
"Sun Blown"/"Green Screen" (again, this is basically one song)
"Raise the Roses"
"Green"
"Not Too Soon"
"Pretty Deep"
"Acrobat"
"Flying at Night"

sick, fucking funny, and well tasty (katherine), Thursday, 19 October 2017 14:52 (eight years ago)

xxpost

Lovesongs for Underdogs is as far as I went ("Pretty Deep" deserves to be considered among the decade's very best female alt.rock moments) but I remember really liking this EP track from a few years back.

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Thursday, 19 October 2017 15:09 (eight years ago)

"Pretty Deep" is marvelous.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 October 2017 15:29 (eight years ago)

Oh, gosh, Fish. Yeah that's top 5. It's a big top 5. All of House Tornado is in there for a start.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 19 October 2017 15:46 (eight years ago)

A couple of weeks ago I listened to all their albums in order. The first era's best is "House Tornado", though I have the CD that adds "The Fat Skier" EP so I think of them as a single item. "Hunkpapa" definitely earns its weak reputation - it has no energy! After Tanya left, I think "University" is the best with "Limbo" close behind - they're both odd, dark and engaging records.

I adore the Belly debut and Tanya's first solo album - both are top-notch indie rock with lots of hooks and memorable chorus's. I know Belly's "King" has its adherents but I'm not one of them, I felt it paled compared to the debut. Similarly, Tanya's later solo work is nice but not as engaging as "Lovesongs". I stan for Kristin's "Hips And Makers" and "Murder, Misery And Goodnight" but after that she kind of loses me, she could use a good best-of her solo work.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 19 October 2017 16:14 (eight years ago)

I'm mostly an "early period" fan but I do dig her work even up to those free seasonal EPs from a while back

off the top of my head:

Hate My Way
The Party (essential track on that 1st self-released 7" EP, never reissued afaik)
Call Me
Cry Baby Cry
A Feeling
Your Ghost
The Letter
probably some things from House Tornado, I need to relisten

sleeve, Thursday, 19 October 2017 16:17 (eight years ago)

confession: I am not really a fan of either Belly album. they're... fine. I really like Tanya solo and with Throwing Muses, so I'm not sure why. (I don't think it's the band, either.)

sick, fucking funny, and well tasty (katherine), Thursday, 19 October 2017 16:22 (eight years ago)

There's tons I haven't heard but "Start" would be on my list, the last 30 seconds are electrifying.

JoeStork, Thursday, 19 October 2017 16:37 (eight years ago)

i blew my kid away last week with the live "mania" and "santa claus" b-side on the "dizzy" 12-inch last week. "santa claus" definitely in any top ten i would make.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 October 2017 16:38 (eight years ago)

i only really liked those first solo tanya 4AD 12-inches. i mean liked in a way that i like throwing muses. meaning a lot.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 October 2017 16:39 (eight years ago)

It's about time I reintroduced Muses into my daughters' lives. They were all about Kristin Hersh for about two weeks four years ago when they met her at our local bookstore. Considering their tastes these days I think they might really latch on to Real Ramona/Star era.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 19 October 2017 17:00 (eight years ago)

can we discuss what a good guitarist she is?

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 October 2017 17:02 (eight years ago)

I love both of the Belly albums, but weirdly these days I like King a little better than Star. After seeing them twice contemporaneously touring for each album, then seeing them last year in Chicago, I think the latter is more reflective of what they actually sound like as a band. I'm not entirely sure Glyn Johns was ever the right producer for the project but I do think he captured something about them that Gil Norton missed.

Monster fatberg (Phil D.), Thursday, 19 October 2017 17:04 (eight years ago)

five years pass...

never had heard this band until this week, tbh— bought a tape of Red Heavenon a whim at a sidewalk sale and i like this shit, it’s somehow both more normal and more weird than i expected

wait till you hear the first album

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 23:22 (two years ago)

^ otm

Kinda jealous of hearing them for the first time, tbh. That first album and the Chains Changed EP still blow my mind.

When Kristin was on her tour for the Vic Chesnutt book, I stood in line to buy one but she ran out of copies a few people ahead of me. I stuck around long enough to tell her I'd been listening to her since I was 16 and how grateful I was to her. One of the few times I ever really gushed to an artist and she was really nice about it.

Just listened to it. Started out kind of annoying, ended brilliantly.
