I'm surprised this hasn't been properly done here yet.. Anyway I have to make a compilation for a friend, 'conjuring' the NYC vibe (ie. not necessarily songs explicitly referring to NY). Obviously this will be highly subjective and partly based on personal experience, but any help appreciated.

So far, I've got:

Joni Mitchell - The Hobo Dance
Nas - Halftime
Sonic Youth - Kool Thing
Nico - Fairest of the Seasons
Nico - Sixty / Fourty
Lou Reed - Lady Day
Wu Tang - Click Click
Rakim - New York

and lots more..

"The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel"

Nick H, Friday, 3 October 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

There really does need to be a lot more hip hop, but I'm afraid I'm not really your best source for that. That said, the first Run-Dmc album (the one with "Rock Box" and "Sucka MCs") was completely ubiquotous when I was in high school.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Some Last Poets and Gil Scott-Heron might fit nicely here too.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick H, Friday, 3 October 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Time Out New York did a pretty terrific list of the top 100 New York records (albums and singles): http://www.timeoutny.com/features/178/178.ft.albums.html

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it's one of my favorite music lists ever

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 3 October 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

That list makes me want to buy stuff.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 3 October 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"Here, hip-hoppers can pick up guitars and saxes, punk rockers can play that funky music, and be-boppers can kick that Afro-Caribbean flavor. And it's all good."

Good list, but gimme a break ...

David Gates of Delirium, Friday, 3 October 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Buy some Kiss N!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 3 October 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

And I suppose "My Metrocard" Le Tigre is a given

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 3 October 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I always think Liquid Liquid, maybe Cavern or Optimo, sounds like what I thought New York was like when I was a kid....this was mostly based on 80s movies like Bright Lights Big City, etc..

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 3 October 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a nice list.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 3 October 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the ones I'd want to say have already been mentioned.

Howabout New York City - T. Rex

Sean (Sean), Friday, 3 October 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Gotta say, lists of that kind usually get it all wrong, but that was mighty well done.

The sound of St.Mark's Place circa Summer of `86:
"We Gotta Know" by the Cro-Mags
"Skinhead Rebel" by Murphy's Law
"Eliminator" by Agnostic Front
