Sweet Revenge

Last night, my boyfriend did something that made me so angry that I did the unthinkable: I put Blonde On Blonde back in his record crate out of alphabetical order. It was delicious.

Does anyone have a comparable tale of record-geek revenge?

I also once used my sister's copy of Blur's self-titled album as a coaster, but then I felt bad and bought her the Japanese import remix album to replace it.

I thought this was going to be about the excellent John Prine album.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 3 October 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

There's something wrong with people who alphabetize their collection. Really wrong.
CDs should be sorted chronologically by the date of the last song cut.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

do you mean the last song on the album or the last song to be recorded?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Last to be recorded.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

you're crazy.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, you're crazy. alphabetical seems to be the only logical way for me to find a particular album 'at-a-glance'. say you've got 100 records from 1979 - may take you a while to find the one you want...

sorry, that was off-topic. surely there's a "Filing your music alphabetically: C/D" thread... (leaves to go search)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Obviously I'm kidding.
I sort by genre, with the artists grouped within each. I know where to find almost any CD. Unfortunately, this method has led to my collection being in large part segregated, with the white artists on the left side of my fireplace and the black artists on the right. But I do have Desmond Dekker hanging out with the Clash, and Jerry Lee and Miles buddying up.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The closest I have to organization right now is that my Canadians are segregated. Other than that, it's a total mess. Which sort of makes it interesting.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

results of search were fruitless. time to start a new thread...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, especially when CDs get lost within a large collection. You stumble across them one day, forgetting you even owned them.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Collections are way better when they're a big mess. My CD's aren't sorted at all; they're just in a lot of piles. I can't ever really find anything specific, but I can close my eyes and stick my arm out and grab something I haven't heard in years. Much more fun. Also less of a pain in the ass to maintain.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry sarah - got a new thread to deal with this now...

as for 'sweet revenge' - i recall having my CDs turned upside down once by an ex-girlfriend, spurred by a debate over which way they are supposed to be (mine were upside down to allow me to file left-to-right the way i liked)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

ex-g.f., we never actually dated even, just y'know...
anyway, long after my fear of commitment-blah-blah had put an end to our weekly whatevers, she called me up and asked if she could borrow a bunch of CDs for a mix she was making.
I lent her about 15 and I haven't heard from her since. Turns out her commit-o-matic new b.f. graduate law school and they moved to the coast together.
Am still hurt.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

that hurts. people who borrow music and don't return it are pretty low on the 'scum' scale.

although you could take the pragmatic side and rest easy in the knowledge that someone, somewhere is enjoying the music on those CDs

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

the worst thing is, none of the ones she took were promo copies even.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Not my story, but a guy I used to know pissed off his girlfriend of the moment. Really, really badly. So she went to his house, flipped through his record collection, and smashed all the stuff she'd heard him say was so cool or so rare or so expensive. She also cut all of his clothes in half with scissors. Knowing him, he probably deserved it.

Lee G (Lee G), Friday, 3 October 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was going to be about the David Johanson album.

Richard Meltzer meets Beau Felton

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 3 October 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably the worst example of this next to Lee's comes from a friend of mine. He'd been dating this woman for a while, a year or two, and was about to propose to her. He'd even bought a house and put her name on the title. Anyway, she went off to see a concert with a "friend" and ended up not coming back and leaving my friend for the "friend."

When she was getting her stuff, she ran off with all of his vinyl and most of his CDs, including all the original pressings of his favourite band's records. She also somehow managed to get his house.

Sarah Pedal posting from school, Friday, 3 October 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

That's seriously depressing. And he just let it slide?

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 3 October 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

BUT WHER3 WUD U PUT MICHA3L BOL2N?!!?? OMG

My ex-boyfriend went around to visit his parent's friends when he was five. The parent's friends brought out this Beatles 45, a floppy one like you get free with magazines, and said, 'This is a very precious record. You can play with anything you like, but not this.' So as soon as they were out of the room, he scratched all over it with a pen. I'm so envious of that story.

Laura, Saturday, 4 October 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yes. Oh yes I have. But he totally deserved it. I'm not going to get into details just in case it was never actually detected. (Hell, he didn't actually listen to or even use over 2/3 of his collection.) But oh yes. If you are going to get revenge on someone, you might as well do it somewhere that you are actually going to score a direct hit that hurts.

That said, having someone steal certain of my records as an act of romantic revenge actually taught me to let go somewhat, and be less materialistic about music.

Shit, I wish I were going out with you! Once I made my girlfriend so mad she also abused my Blonde on Blonde - by smashing up one of the (vinyl) discs. I seriously would have preferred it if she'd done both. Then I'd just replace it. But now I'm stuck with half an album. And when I finally get a new copy (which I will soon, with the new remaster CD out) I won't know what to with the old one. I can't just chuck it out, can I?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 4 October 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

canadian segregation is clearly the best method of record sorting suggested so far.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Saturday, 4 October 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, for some reason there was nothing he could do. The worst part of it is that he couldn't afford her ass when they were together, so he joined the Army Reserves, and now he's stuck in Kuwait.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Sunday, 5 October 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Harming a Dylan record is a cardinal sin.
