Okay, so I like The Darkness. What AC/DC albums should I get?

My mate reckons that Permission to Land is a 4/10 AC/DC album. To my knowledge, I have heard not one AC/DC song evah, so pardon my ignorance.

Or is my friend on drugs?

None. The Darkness are nothing like AC/DC. Try Poison or Ratt or Twisted Sister or other Hair Metal of the 80s. AC/DC were a Proper Rock Band.

That said, it doesn't matter what AC/DC album you get, they're all approximately the same. Which is a good thing. Though if you really want to know what good, i.e. non Hair metal is, you want to get Back In Black.

I'm sorry, my hatred of The Darkness knows no bounds. I lived through the 80s once. Why do I have to do it again?

BECAUSE THE FIRST TIME YOU GOT IT WRONG

There only a few songs on Permission to Land that sound like AC/DC - the most obvious one is 'Black Shuck,' which is like a sped up 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.' The more melodic power ballads on PIM don't reference AC/DC catalogue. I agree with Kate, start with Back in Black and if you're still hungry after that, get Highway to Hell or Who Made Who, which is a collection of stuff and includes the monumental 'For Those About the Rock.'

The Darkness = Tigers of Pan Tang, Thin Lizzy, Queen

The Darkness are nothing like Poison! Being that Poison are a really really great pop band, and the Darkness are quite good.

Personally, I'd say "Highway to Hell" is a good choice for AC/DC.

Why are the Darkness pastiche? How can you tell these things, jel? I only ask because I don't understand heavy metal. This is where you tell me they aren't heavy metal.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 4 October 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I deleted the pastiche bit. It's just a kinda "rock authenticity" "paying your dues" "it's for the fans" thing that you get from listening to metal, reading interviews etc. You don't get this from the Darkness. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but you just sort of know it's not quite the done thing. Then you think of yourself as really silly and buying into the whole 'authenticity' thing!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 4 October 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

N, you should read "Fargo Rock City" by Chuck Kloisterman, I found it quite insightful about how I feel/felt about rock/metal.

Oi! Stop abusing moderator privileges by deleting bits of your posts to make me look insane!

sorry!!!

If you want really cheesy hard stuff than maybe "Back in Black" or "Highway to Hell", "For those about to Rock" has a couple tunes as well - but I actually truly like the "High Voltage" - not in an ironic way either. I think the White Stripes have a lot in common with the early AC/DC sound - minimalist, blues inspired, dirty and hard.

pete from the street, Saturday, 4 October 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ps- "Live Wire" is the Jam off of High Voltage, although T.N.T is the party classic

pete from the street, Saturday, 4 October 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

AC/DC has some pretty ill lyrics:

Let me put my love into you babe
Let me put my love on the line
Let me put my love into you babe
Let me cut your cake with my knife

-'Let Me Put My Love Into You' off of Back in Black

calstars (calstars), Saturday, 4 October 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

anything bon scott related. the only ac/dc you need. back in black is good though.

simon 803 (simon 803), Saturday, 4 October 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

warning: the Darkness's singer will sound utterly horrific once you get into actual, not-merely-ironic pop metal. The band itself is fine, but jesus christ that amateurish falsetto dumbfuck needs to be shot. Cinderella's lead singer had an unfathomable voice too, but he put some gen-yoo-wine emotion behind it. There's nobody in rock today that I would rather punch than this Darkness chappy. The Darkness makes me miss Buckcherry!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 October 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

So am I to understand that proper pop metal takes itself seriously? I kind of thought that people who really understood metal tended to laugh at metal-riduculers for not understanding the self-aware theatricality of the whole thing. Like wrestling or something.

Have the Darkness ever actually said anything to the effect that they are just taking the piss? I think the guy from the Darkness has an amazing voice.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 4 October 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I was trying to acknowledge the theatricality of it by saying it's not-MERELY-ironic. The Darkness feels like intentionally bad metal, which really rankles me for some reason. Warrant, Poison, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, even Ted Nugent, hell THE ELECTRIC SIX all sound fairly convicing in their passions even if it's all a goof. The Darkness dude just sounds so wanna-be. Hell, the guy from Ween did this shit better with "Dr. Rock."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the guy from the Darkness has an amazing voice.

As Dan Perry noted, off to listening to Queensryche with you and burn your B&S records. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I got bored of listening to the Darkness v.quickly, but live and unknown at 10.30 in the morning at Glastonbury, they were quite a thrill. Yes, I was enjoying it ironically and screaming "Lo-ooove on the rocks with no i-eeeee-ce" for days afterwards at anyone who would listen.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I just flipped through a few other Darkness threads and it's occured to me that while the band strikes me as more '80s pop-metal (hell, I almost starting singing "Jessie's Girl" to one song), the singer comes from a school (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Scorpions) of rock that I don't dig. Or at least his fans do.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The Darkness makes me miss Buckcherry!

Do the UK fans realize how badly they've been insulted here?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 October 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey! What were Chixdiggit like?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 4 October 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to kiss you every minute every hour every day
You got me in a spin but everyfing is A-OK

calstars (calstars), Saturday, 4 October 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

What were Chixdiggit like?

Silly punk, just like eleventy million other bands. Easily worth your time if you're into acts capable of holding up their end of the deal as bottom act on a seven band bill in 150-capacity dives.

George Smith, Sunday, 5 October 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard the Darkness again today and it IS pretty funny, though sometimes I wish the joke had more layers (better lyrics would help). I'm a bit unnerved by this Journey meets Heart deal being as successful as it is, but it's not worthless.
