Dido - Life for Rent? A must for the middle-class parodist..

John Nokes, Saturday, 4 October 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Susumu Yokota - 'Future Tiger'

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 4 October 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Right what this list is missing would be pop. I would suggest Junior Senior, One True Voice, the Darkness and of course Aesop Rock.

ilxbot, Saturday, 4 October 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The Byrds - Notorious Byrd Brothers

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 4 October 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

ANYTHING BY MORRISSEY < /SAD FUCKER>

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 4 October 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 4 October 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

(Dom P, yo sure are a man with a message. Wot that message be, though, beats me :)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 4 October 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil, do you actually catalogue the days on which you buy stuff?

Nick H, Saturday, 4 October 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Since you have so much Kinks on your list, could I suggest getting the debut album by The 88, which hasn't gotten tons of press, but is really very nice. It has a pretty strong Kinks (circa Something Else/Village Green) influence, but doesn't sound like a nostalgia piece. They have a website www.the88.net with soundclips.

dlp9001, Sunday, 5 October 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

how 'bout some Uncle Tupelo

yaeger, Sunday, 5 October 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Fairport Convention - Liege and Lief
The Louvin Brothers - When I Stop Dreaming: The Best of the Louvin Brothers
The Stanley Brothers - Angel Band: The Classic Mercury Recordings
Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle
The Small Faces - Ogden's Nut Gone Flake
Split Enz - Mental Notes
The Ecstasy of St. Theresa - Slowthinking

Marcus Barr (Marcus Barr), Sunday, 5 October 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick-Only a recent development i assure you! Just wanted to see the rate i was buying new stuff this year. In 2002 i bought just WAY too many discs WAY too fast for my tastes. This makes me slow down a bit more...

...middle-class parodist...you wish!

Phil Dokes (sunny), Sunday, 5 October 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Fairport Convention - Liege and Lief

agreed! fantastic stuff. just got this the other day and adore it already

Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle

noooooooooooooooooooooooooo

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 5 October 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 5 October 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought "trout mask replica" was difficult to get into. little did i know that van dyke parks had a surprise for me

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 5 October 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to second Jody's yes (wish that southside callbox would open back up!) still can't get into Trout Mask, love his other stuff tho'...

Phil Dokes (sunny), Sunday, 5 October 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Song Cycle is the Beach Boys' Smile without the Beach Boys.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 5 October 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

either you guys haven't actually listened to it, or you're bonkers. it's the most bizarre album i've ever heard, bar none.

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 5 October 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

fuckin' a Jim - "Vine Street" is one of the greatest songs of the 20th century! I thought you liked "songs"!!

Ok, Phil - now that I see you're actually checking this thread (unlike folk who sort of show up, post a query and never return) .. I gotta ask - have you heard my Byrds suggestion?! Cuz I think you'll totally love it!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 5 October 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd try listening to it again but i gave it away already :(

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 5 October 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

vic chesnutt - the saleman and bernadette

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 5 October 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr D-i'm listening to samples of it now (Draft Morning-NICE!) Never have been able to get into them before, may be a McGuinn bias on some level...more a Flying Burrito's man myself. But it will go on the list for sure, thanks for the reccomend!

Everything else i'm pretty familiar with. Leige and Leif is a longtime favorite, Uncle Tupelo as well & Susuma Yokota...someone on here turned me on to that before...thank you wherever you may be!

Phil Dokes (sunny), Sunday, 5 October 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Dead Boys, perhaps?

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 5 October 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil D - sorry, i messed up a bit: the Susumu Yokota album is called 'Boy & The Tree' ("Future Tiger" is a song from that very alb.)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 5 October 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It looks like you have pretty similar taste to me.

I'll just go for one:

Nina Simone - Baltimore

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 5 October 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes to Song Cycle.

Jim O'Rourke - Eureka or maybe Insignificance (he says Song Cycle is his favourite album)

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 5 October 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I find Song Cycle virtually unlistenable, but don't let that put you off.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 5 October 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Eureka seconded

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for the suggestions, the Chestnutt and O'Rourke are going on the list too...

Phil Dokes (sunny), Sunday, 5 October 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Lee Perry and the Upsetters, get "all the hits"

Mia P, Monday, 6 October 2003 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Song Cycle isn't as good as I was hoping for it to be, but come on, it's certainly not weirder than Trout Mask Replica!

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 6 October 2003 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

pre-listen to Song Cycle (although this method may no work for such an enigmatic LP as that)
why don't you just try listening first, even if asking ILx is a fine substitute ?

Van Dyke Parkes' followup Discover America is much more 'pop' (once you get past the fake nostalgia song 'featuring' Bing Crosby)
or Lick My Decals Off Baby, Beefheart's succinct accessible well-produced improvement/ followup on TMR

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Right what this list is missing would be pop.

Not that there is anything wrong with more pop (the best musical genre ever :-)), but these are all clearly very much pop records:

8. Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci-The Blue Trees (1/25/03)
9. The Flaming Lips-Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (1/25/03)
18. Elvis Costello-Spike Expanded (3/7/03)
19. Elvis Costello-All This Useless Beauty Expanded (3/7/03)
21. Frank Sinatra-Songs For Swingin’ Lovers (3/15/03)
22. Bjork-Post (3/15/03)
33. Bjork-Vespertine (6/6/03)
37. The Kinks-Muswell Hillbillies (6/28/03)
38. The Kinks-FaceTo Face (6/28/03)
39. The Kinks-Arthur or the Decline of the British Empire (6/28/03)
44. The Kinks-The Kink Kontroversy (8/10/03)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 6 October 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny how synchronicity works, I was just listening to "Song Cycle" before I read this thread and it is genius genius genius but not maybe to everyone's tastes. And I wouldn't really recommend "Discover America" as a "poppier version" of "Song Cycle", in fact I'd say Randy Newman's first album is more like a poppier version of "Song Cycle".
