Bands who don't abuse their cults

The flip-side of the squeezing-every-drop-out question: bands, preferably prolific bands, who don't make people buy the same thing over and over in slightly different form, or whose live/demo/remix/etc. collections are always genuinely worthwhile.

Mr. Jadwin Fair, the nicest guy in music.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 5 October 2003 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

go betweens reissues have been pretty good - the beggars banquet reissues of a few years back were kinda sucky with the terrible cover art but the recent ones on jetset/circus with the bonus CD are fricken great! as was the "lost album" reish with the able label singles on it.

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 5 October 2003 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess you would have to include the dead, right? they did let people tape them for free forever.(well, for the price of a ticket.but if you missed the show someone would make you a tape of it.) How many people did/or do that? ( and i realize that they are multi-millionare merchandising moguls, but still...)

scott seward, Sunday, 5 October 2003 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

But eclecticism eventually becomes expected of these artists, ne?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 5 October 2003 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Gira's not very abusive, despite the high price tags on Swans reissues and assorted other ltd-ed Young God stuff. All of it is consistantly very good.

Xii (Xii), Sunday, 5 October 2003 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

A big hand to Mr. John D. o' Them Mountain Goats and that three CD series of rarities and goodness.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 October 2003 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

JUST got back from seeing them Mountain Goats. Damn what a show.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 5 October 2003 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Super Furry Animals. They bother to make great B-sides which are on a par with the singles, and they never bother with the CD1/CD2 bollocks like their contempories.

Nick H, Sunday, 5 October 2003 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The Beatles. If they don't get a move on and remaster Revolver, .

Johnney B (Johnney B), Sunday, 5 October 2003 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

pardon me, but i just mis-read the topic heading.

Neil FC (Neil FC), Sunday, 5 October 2003 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Killing Joke....sorely in need of a re-mastering/re-release/box set.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 5 October 2003 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Fugazi/Discord Records

Nate (Nate), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

it seems like pearl jam are good to their fans.. I doubt they let folks record their shows for free, but they at least make a big chunk of them available for those who want them..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 6 October 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Remember these?

I think the mere fact that Pearl Jam put out that much product on the market (knowing full well there are zealots out there who bought each one of the live series) makes them inelligible for this thread.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 October 2003 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

dischord records is a scam.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 6 October 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to meet the pearl jam fan who owns every single one of those. I think its more of a 'i went to that show, id like to have it.' kinda situation, but i see your point as well...

i also think the fact that its not the same material repackaged over and over again makes it a little bit more redeemable behavior.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 6 October 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the fall needs to be mentioned...

code-selfish
infotainment scan
light user syndrome
middle class revolt
cerebral caustic
the unuterrable

the live 2xCD = the 27 points

all span incredible dynamic shifts in sound and scope and extremely underrated compared to oft-cited mid-80s period.

i have (perhaps wisely) not taken interest in any of the various live collections (esp. the newish ones) so not sure if this nomination is a valid qualifier.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 6 October 2003 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Fritz - Dischord/scam? Explain.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Monday, 6 October 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Dischord has been secretly run by a coalition of riot cops, the dude from the Wendy's commercial, and the IMF since 1983. All proceeds from Dischord are funnelled into supporting children's beauty pageants and Soldier of Fortune magazine.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 6 October 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

the fall absolutely do not count; mark smith let that crappy label flood the market with confusing compilations of alternate versions and bad live tracks, none of which is clearly marked (I'm talking about the stuff on receiver, or at least I think that's the name of the label. 'oswald defence lawyer' and 'fiend with a violin' and a hundred others).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 6 October 2003 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say the Pixies when 4AD put out the Peel sessions and B-sides cds at mid price. But then Cooking Vinyl released the "purple tapes" which cost the same as both of the aforementioned put together, but with only a quarter of the songs. :-(

Ben Dot (1977), Monday, 6 October 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess Grateful Dead, really.
the fans don't even buy their albums, they just run around going "Check out my legs! HOTTT!"
Aaaaaand, the reissue of Europe '72 had a completely ridiculous amount of bonus stuff..... Good stuff at that!

Of course, I suppose the band did make a nice drug-selling career through their fans.

Stereolab, despite being super-collector-scum-abusers in many ways, were actually nice enough to put together nice little compilation albums of rarities so you DON'T have to chase down every tour seven inch in order to hear rare tracks and remixes that were often very good.

This completely made me laugh out loud. Cheers!

Medeski Martin and Wood is really good to their fancult; they tour almost NONSTOP (in the like 7 years I've been listening to them they've managed to play somewhere near me almost every 6 months), they've released a variety of supplemental material (maxi-singles with b-sides & rarities, remix discs, an entire album available only-on-their-website), and they not only allow taping of their shows, they encourage it. Not to mention they're very nice mufuckaz.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Derrick May.

There's only collection of his singles available ("Innovator"), and even that one isn't quite complete, what with some of the tracks shortened and divided into two parts. If someone would tell me how to find cheap full-length versions of these tracks, I'd be highly grateful.
