IT'S NOT FAAAAAAAIIIIIIRRRRRRRR . . . AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!

Classic

For creating the first truly original pop music to come out of New Zealand and being the father of all adventurous music that has come out of that land thereafter.

For writing timeless, imaginative songs influenced by Mervyn Peake, Hermann Hesse, etc, that transport the listener to beautiful internal worlds.

For writing the majority of the material for Mental Notes, the best Split Enz album and one of the greatest debut albums in the history of popular music.

For singing in a beautifully strange, exaggerated staccato that apparently left a lasting impression on John Lydon, especially his singing with P.I.L.

For embracing New Zealand's punks in the late 70s and being directly involved with two of the best bands to come out of the scene -- The Suburban Reptiles and The Enemy.

For leaving a lasting impression on Chris Knox, the so-called "godfather of New Zealand's alternative music scene" (Judd has even in recent years been an object of praise in Knox's comics, such as Max Media.).

For convincingly embracing New Wave (which he arguably helped to create) by starting The Swingers and having much more fun with the music than the Split Enz did at that time.

For writing the soundtrack to Nadia Tass's Amy that features an ensemble of ukuleles only.

For co-writing songs for a stage production of C.S. Lewis's The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.

For being an all-around great and oft-misunderstood genius of modern music.

Phil Judd = the Syd Barrett of New Zealand

Damian (Damian), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

unlike Syd, Phil isn't damaged, is he ?

isn't it just as though he shunned the spotlight increasingly, first with the make-up and then going underground.. ? no matter that that Swingers' song is one of the most famously produced local songs ever (and something of a coup in Australia).

were Split Enz just too weird for nz with the initial Judd/ Tim Finn partnership ? too truly progressive ? whatever, i wasn't old enough to go to gigs back then. i love the early impressionistic synth use and the completely non rock music essence of all the complexities of the music and the wacko lyrics. I especially love Judd's art work, eg the cover of first album Mental Notes.

i'm not being nz-ist here, but he's always been an enigma in the back yard, the really odd mystery element that gave pre-Neil Split Enz a lot of their no-other-band-like-that charm.

george gosset (gegoss), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Not damaged, no, but given some of the things I've heard about how remarkably contrary the guy could be, it's as though he may as well have been, in a way. Tim Finn covered an old, previously unrecorded Judd song on his last solo LP - apparently his attempts to get in touch with Judd failed, and they haven't spoken in over ten years now. Judd's just as reluctant to talk about his early career, it would seem - I don't recall him being involved in the Give It A Whirl doco.

dud. mental notes is the worst split enz record. they became a great band after he split.

the swingers are unlistenable.

Dallas Yertle (Dallas Yertle), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, Mental Notes is the best, Enz went (comparatively) boring post-Judd and the Swingers are wonderful. IMHO. I thought the Swingers' "Hit The Beach" was a real surprise - a vivid description of the Normandy invasion in an insanely pop and happy-sounding song. Plus yeah, his mysteriousness lends a certain cachet and his paintings are amusing.

I am sorry I let this thread die.
Thank you so much, George and Poppy,
for your comments and insights.

George, are you Space Dust George?!

Marcus Barr (Marcus Barr), Sunday, 15 August 2004 15:24 (twenty years ago)

i dont know if george posts here any more, but he is pretty closely tied to the spacedust guys.. though i dunno if he's ever played with them before..

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 16 August 2004 02:04 (twenty years ago)

Hi Chris. Thanks! I thought I hadn't noticed him on here in while. I found out he does play with Space Dust occasionally. It'd be cool if he found this thread again, if only to hear the new song.

Hi Marcus and all,
just recently found this thread and really wanted to contribute to it, but I guess I was a bit shy.
I’m so glad I found other Phil Phanatics. I fell in 1976, barely 14, aimlessly browsing though the “S” section in my local record store and found Mental Notes. As soon as I saw that painting, I knew I was going to love this record, and I was right. From then on, I was part of the Church of Philip Raymond Judd , aka the Phil Mystique.
No One’s Best Man is a masterpiece. And you can find another new Phil song on the frenz forum now. Can’t wait for the album (and the artwork, and the website).
I could go on and on., but I don’t want to ramble.
Phil’s da man. Period.

There are some truly brilliant songs on Phil's upcoming album, "Novelty Act". Should be out in 2005. Website to come soon... possibly a video or two as well...

No, he didn't contribute to the "Give It a Whirl" docos, but he will be talking all about the early Enz years in Radio New Zealand's "Enzology" documentary series, which begins on National Radio on January 1st 2005. This will also be streamed online at www.radionz.co.nz a few days later. The series is in ten parts, each 50 minutes long, and covers the years up until 1984. Everyone from Phil Judd, to the Finns to Paul Hester chips in with their memories, as do some of the record producers and managers. Lots of demos, rehearsals, live recordings and studio out-takes.

If anyone was having any doubts about Phil Judd's classic status, his new album Novelty Act should surely cast those away. It really is a brilliant piece of work. It's been getting some great press and play in the NZ and Oz, and I imagine it will start to catch on elsewhere very soon.

You can hear a few full songs and some samples on Judd's website and myspace and stream his new video for "No-One's Best Man" as well.

It was difficult to guess what Judd's return to the realm of popular music might be like and I must say Novelty Act has exceeded all my expectations. It will easily be my favorite album of this year with Scott Walker's The Drift most likely being a close second.

and let us not forget the swingers were the backing band in what was my favourite film in high school - "STARSTRUCK" - i'll have to rent that again one of these days

'One Good Reason' is a great track - as obviously was ' Counting the Beat' in it's day

grapple (grapple), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 02:00 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, it's great to see so many positive comments about our Mr. Phudd! Novelty Act is fantastic. It's one of those CDs that hangs together really well - all the songs do seem to tell a story. I agree that the early Judd-era Enz is my favorite. I was introduced to Split Enz when True Colours was released, and then went back and got their earlier stuff and was amazed at how different it was - ! Hey, I was only 11 at the time, give me a break :) And now that early stuff dominates my Enz-listening. Late Last Night, 129, Sweet Dreams, Titus - pure genius.
