Alto saxophonist proclaimed as British Jazz's great hope. Anyone heard his debut - Conversations With The Unseen?

Anyway what do people think? I may or may not see him on thursday in manchester, still deciding on that one...

We used to play the album at work when it first came out. And it's pretty cool (better than the boring soundtracks that we normally play), but I'm a bit confused about why it's classed as jazz, when half the album has the rhythm and style of hip hop. Or is this the future direction of jazz?

Its essentially jazz infused with hip-hop, rather than vice versa. He's definetly taking jazz in new and exciting directions.

There's a good profile of him:

Also i am ashamed not more ILMers have replied to this, Soweto Kinch is a star-in-the-making! So see

Jimmy, "taking jazz in new and exciting directions" sounds like bad PR fluff and isn't, I don't think, esp. accurate anyway - Courtney Pine, to name just the most obv. example, has been doing the rap/jazz mash-up for years, and Kinch's alto playing is just a slightly more modern take on Charlie Parker's.

He's got a great name, I'll given him that

ok there's no need to get cynical - All i'm saying is that this guy has a lot of talent and he's making good ORIGINAL music. End of story. Have you heard the album?

Jimmy Parker, Monday, 6 October 2003 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Jimmy, I've heard pretty much every 'major' jazz release of the year, inc. the Kinch, many times over - I work in a jazz rec dept. I much prefer the Roy Hargrove alb to the Kinch, have you heard that?

two months pass...
I heard him on Jazz Fest in Sarajevo,Bosnia, two months ago,and all I can say he`s intersting and very good player.I got CD there and like it,although I don`t like hip-hop album is very good.I saw there Denyse Baptiste too and I heard them on session together,it was like Trane and Bird were there. There two are first big thing in British jazz since the big generation(McLaughlin,Holland,Surman).I work on best radio in Novi Sad,Yugoslavia,Radio 021, and and I played both albums.I hope I`ll have a chance to see them again.

Funnily enough, I heard the Kinch alb again today, and the playing on it reminded me of the last Kenny Garrett rec, 'Standards of Language'

I'm even less thrilled by the new Denys Baptiste, I have to say

Thanks Martian, from the choices on offer I voted for 'Freak In' by Dave Douglas.
