from allhiphop.com:

For the first time in Billboard's chart history, the top 10 songs are by
African-American artists. Aside from Beyonce's "Baby Boy," the other 9 are
by rappers. They are: "Shake Ya Tailfeather," "Get Low," "Right Thurr,"
"Frontin," "Damn!" "P.I.M.P.," "Into You," "Stand Up," & "Where Is The
Love?"

trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 5 October 2003 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

these songs are all so good!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 5 October 2003 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

'for the first time in billboards chart history the top ten songs have all actually been danceable... '

trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 5 October 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

though someday i will learn to dance to rock music!!!

trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 5 October 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

also jess' hate on beyonce's crazy dancing is nuts.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 5 October 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the g-unit baby boy remix is sooo great

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 5 October 2003 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

plus 10 country songs in top fifty

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 5 October 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

See trife, the problem is you say things like "MOST IMPORTANT SONG EVER" when it's really only the MOST IMPORTANT SONG IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC, but this isn't time to split hairs, we should be celebrating.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 5 October 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

why is it more important than 'Frontin'?

has there ever not been at least one Afro-American in the top ten?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 5 October 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yes -- 1980.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 5 October 2003 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Honestly, though, something tells me this won't solve the problem's with America's race dynamic. 9 rappers in the top ten? we want 9 rappers in the supreme court!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 5 October 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is great, but with that kind of hip-hop saturation could signal the possibility of backlash. Against what and by whom, I'm not sure.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 5 October 2003 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I pray not against Lil Jon.

joshd, Sunday, 5 October 2003 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

this is great but..how could anyone *dance* to "Into You" ?

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 5 October 2003 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i am completely turned around on this song now.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 5 October 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

slow dancing vic, slow dancing.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like "Where Is The Love?" and haven't heard some of the others, but I dig the cultural ramifications of this. And if you guys want to know what the backlash is going to resemble:

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

And if Justin Timberlake is the John Travolta of this magical time I cannot WAIT until he makes his Staying Alive.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Wouldn't he need to make his Saturday Night Fever first?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's only a matter of time before some fed up individual will proclaim "rap is crap".

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

And that they're not real musicians! And can't sing! Oh the terror.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah isn't it like a few decades too late for the "backlash" to commence? i don't think anyone other than rock critics gives a shit about the ratio of black to white artists in the billboard anyway, no one else knows or really cares. and this doesn't signify any sort of change in terms of radio play either, imo. i mean the creed-crap-rock stations aren't going away anywhere for people who like to listen to that. this isn't threatening in the mildest to anyone's sense of masculinity either, a la the fabulous dandies dancing around to gloria gaynor

its funny, but this might just be the norm from now on. when i went to vegas recently i met some dude from nebraska who was like "oh now all i listen to is hip-hop; i used to listen to metallica and all this metal and.... " etc. he said that everyone back homes listens to hip-hop and that there are a lot of "fake thugs" all around. but maybe he doesn't represent anything; i liked how he was from omaha and didn't give a damn about any saddle creek artist!

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the first step in the blacklash will come clouded in radical subjectivism. "i just like screwdriver better than hip-hop. don't ask me why. i just do, okay. its a taste thing."

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean the creed-crap-rock stations aren't going away anywhere for people who like to listen to that.

Dammit.

i liked how he was from omaha and didn't give a damn about any saddle creek artist!

I don't like that. I love it.

David Allen, Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't say it's simply going to be a rap backlash anymore that "disco sucks" was really a dance music backlash (hell, new wave survived!). It's more that there's going to be a backlash to the different strands of hedonism, club-centric rap culture, metrosexuality and all the other tre disco things going on now. As Vic's post implies it may not be as severe since the pop music world is already so stratified, but those reactionary songs by Toby Keith and Tim McGraw that Xgau talked about in his recent turkey shoot imply that a good number of folks are definitely feeling threatened by the "Gangsters" and "funny boys" filling up our media. If the current dance/rap sway thing pushes too far into the mainstream, if an equivalent of that Ethel Merman disco record shows up, then expect to see Justin Timberlake albums being bulldozed at baseball stadiums.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Why go for the albums when they could bulldoze THE REAL THING.

Hey wait, I'm the backlash! Oh dear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Justin Timberlake getting crap thrown at him at Stones concert = Prince getting crap thrown at him at Stones Concert?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I was trying to think of how this thing could go TOO FAR and basically it would involve J. Lo or Britney Spears getting caught in the crossfire of a shootout between Ja Rule and 50 Cent. Either that or Junior Senior's next album going to number one on the charts courtesy of a "Y.M.C.A." type novelty single.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the backlash would be Bush winning a second term with a landslide, surely?

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 5 October 2003 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely a big part of it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 October 2003 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

wait but i thought the nelly and cam'ron WERE the new fascists

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 5 October 2003 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

and you would think AC/DC was dance music. Both sides of these battle have LOTS in common.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 October 2003 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

gosh, part of the disco backlash couldn't have the tidal wave of sterile crap that drown the stuff that might have been good.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 5 October 2003 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

it's funny cuz i heard shake ya tailfeather on rick dee's top 40 show on the radio today(he even played a medley of previous versions of the song ending with Hanson) and i immediately started singing "Disco Duck" when i heard Rick's distinctive voice. mebbe he should come out with Gangsta Duck and you will get the backlash that you want. that black eyed peas song is pretty catchy. Shake Ya doesn't make me want to shake anything i'm afraid. but then whenever i hear puffy's sterile, hollow mumble i usually just wanna take a nap.

scott seward, Monday, 6 October 2003 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the modified fsu chant

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 6 October 2003 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it'll probably grow on me. almost everything i hear on the radio does eventually.

scott seward, Monday, 6 October 2003 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to hear this crap when I'm at the gym. Either that or it's usually even worse crap on the modern rock station, but they're both pretty bad either way.

Al Andalous, Monday, 6 October 2003 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how the video for "Where Is The Love?" looks like a Sprite ad, but is actually selling peace. Pop culture stealing FROM advertisers is always kind of interesting.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 6 October 2003 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

my favorite thing about armagedon was how it seemed to be one long advertisement for itself

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 6 October 2003 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

word!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 6 October 2003 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

god i totally need to find an opportunity to do some slow grinding with a girl to "so into you".

credit card with no limit so you don't be maxin when you spend is a FANTASTIC line.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 6 October 2003 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

you love my smile no matter how chipped my toof is.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 6 October 2003 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

trife: simple guide to rock dancing - shake your head more and your butt less.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 6 October 2003 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

that black eyed peas song is pretty catchy

*clutches chest**dies*

Hunter (Hunter), Monday, 6 October 2003 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean jesus, that song makes me want to napalm a mink farm.

Hunter (Hunter), Monday, 6 October 2003 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hanson wrote "Shake Ya Tailfeather"?

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 6 October 2003 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Who are "Damn!" and "Stand Up" by? I know all the others and don't dislike any of them though the Beyonce was a bit of a let-down. (I particularly love "Into You", "Where Is The Love", "Right Thurr" and "Get Low")

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 October 2003 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

youngbloodz = damn, tho the mashonda feat busta version is better
luda = stand up, the b-side 'p-poppin' is better

prima fassy (bob), Monday, 6 October 2003 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

here is your rockist backlash, friends

prima fassy (bob), Monday, 6 October 2003 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i listened to the ludacris album at a cd store today and it sounded absolutely amazing. Definite next purchase for me (unless I can blag a review copy) - anyone else have thoughts on it yet?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

< snap>
aaaaaaaaaaah my hands

That of course is what he deserves for pretending to be a musician, when he was only a butcher!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 6 October 2003 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i have no thoughts on "chicken and beer". watching the new luda video on the BET uncut has erased my braines.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 6 October 2003 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i listened to the ludacris album at a cd store today and it sounded absolutely amazing.

Did you listen beyond the fourth song?

JoB (JoB), Monday, 6 October 2003 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Did YOU? (three words: "Hip Hop Quotables")

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 6 October 2003 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I did. Hip Hop Quaotables is indeed very cool and I also like Screwed Up. But the dynamite is in the first four tracks. As an album I was disappointed (as with the the first two Luda CD's).

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

ten years pass...

the movie No Strings Attached has a pretty amazing scene where "Shake Your Tailfeather" kicks in immediately after somebody says "can I finger you?"
