"rock out with your little sailor's cap". because the guy from metallica, alvin metallica, used to wear them back when the band started out. in the fourties.

There's a girl I know who says this "rock out" phrase all the time, because she's slipping away. Because she has a fifty hour a week job now and no longer goes to shows. It's a phrase that should never, ever be said out loud. As soon as it's said, it starts to make you more and more transparent, like in Back to the Future.

The first time I heard the phrase was in Hawaii in the late 70's. The band was called Lock Up Your Daughters and the lead singer was Tookie. The song was "Rock Out With Your Cock Out". I don't know if Tookie coined the expression. The song was a simple Heavy Metal 1-1-4-1-5-1. Typical 1 note screaming. 4/4 time. Rock(1) Out(2) WithYourCockOut(3&4).Ok...chew up a light bulb and swallow and you will get Tookie's voice.LyricsERock Out With Your Cock OutERock Out With Your Cock OutARock Out with Your Cock OutERock Out with your Cock OutBRock Out With your Cock OutE (one note and scream)SHE SMELLS LIKE TUNA!
(repeat and rise as often as needed)
A few years later in the early 80's The Toyes (windward side of Oahu) wrote Smoke Two Joints.
