S &D : Fade-ins

Listening to 'Black Star' by radiohead today reminded me how much I like the song because of the way it fades in, something kind of rare in pop music. Go.

I have plenty of techno/house DJ records that fade in (which always annoys me...hard to find the 1 and get the phrasing right...) but not a ton of rock/pop/whatever stuff.

All I'm coming up with now is "Vaseline" by Stone Temple Pilots.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, "Turn to Stone" by ELO fades in too.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I Want To Break Free by Queen comes to mind.

Damian (Damian), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The Shins 'New Slang'. Lovely song and all the better for the fade in and out.

mms (mms), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The most famous fade-in in "rock" music may be the intro to "Where The Streets Have No Name".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Back cover of Mad Magazine.

Hand in Glove (forget which version..)

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

SEARCH: "No Reason to Complain" by the Lyres, "I Want You Back" by the Hoodoo Gurus and "Stop This Game" by Cheap Trick, which is the first song on their otherwise lamentable album, All Shook Up. The opening note that fades in is supposedly the final note that fades out on Sgt.Pepper's. Audacious? Yes, but still cool.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the slow, somnambulistic fade-in to "To All the Girls" that opens up Paul's Boutique is not only a great fade-in (and fade-out at the end), but one of the greatest album openers of all time....if y'ask me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Sigur Ros "Vidrar Vel Til Loftarasa" (aka track 7 on Agaetis Byrjun) with the atmospherics then the piano fading eeeeeveeeeer sooooooo sloooooowly in and not reaching full volume until about the 2 minute mark, it's very patient and evokes this wonderful wintery ambience that really sets the tone for the whole piece.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It has to be "Porcelina of the Vast Oceans" by the Pumpkins... Very slow fade in, lovely guitar plucking intro...

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Out Of The Blue~Roxy Music is a fine fade in.

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us fades in doesn't it?

Ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

People, people puh-LEASE! The best fade-in:

The Smiths: Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others

Bonus points because it fades in, out, and back in again! (Except for you wacky Australians, who have a different version on The Queen Is Dead for some reason)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

As a kid I liked the fade-in to Metallica's Orion, it reminded me of the soundtrack for a sci-fi movie or something.

blur's "he thought of cars" is my favourite.

stone roses - i wanna be adored

gfd, Tuesday, 7 October 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I just pulled the record off the shelf to make sure, but does "I Want You Back" really fade in? It begins with what sounds like a couple seconds of decaying notes played backwards; this does mimic the build-up of a fade in, but is it the same thing? It's also very brief. Fab song, though.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Verve - A New Decade. Always cool when the fade in is at the top of an album and it works.

Michael G, Tuesday, 7 October 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

sub-category: fade-ins within a song. david bowie, "changes." the snare drum fades in on every chorus. weird and fabulous.

"Limbo Swing" by Dadamah--fades in slowly over most of the song, then peaks near the end with some saturated organ, then fades out with the organ spinning around by itself.

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"Gaudete", Steeleye Span

(Good gracious, what a song. Not to mention its unhurried fading-in and -out. A cappella, to boot.)
